Cannot Locate Saved Document
Mar 23, 2008This is the 2nd time this has happened. I was e-mailed a Word document (docx) vision. Opened the document, worked on it, used Ctrl S to save and cannot locate the saved document.

May 11, 2008I've got a game issue with the new Iron Man game released last week by Sega. It's affecting a lot of the PC gamers, but no one has found a solution yet. Hopefully, someone in here has some ideas or a solution. Iron Man installed fine, but when we go to launch it, we get the same error box popping up, saying:
"Cannot locate the DVD-ROM"
"Please insert the correct DVD-ROM, select OK and restart application"
Then there's the OK button at the bottom
There's only 1 DVD for this game and it has to be in the drive for the game to run. The game just refuses to run. I finally sat down this weekend and all day today, trying different things, like cycling between the different compatibility modes, updating DVD firmware, tweaking the game's INI files, and Googling every damn thing I can think of to see if there any other solutions or anyone who's solved this. Nothing works.

How can I locate the file? It's not in the download folder. If I search for the file name nothing comes up (I sure miss the old search process). Jun 21, 2008This is not the same problem that was discussed in 2007--does not have to do with mail. I get the error "Could not locate a valid definitions file. Please go to the program options and click 'update definitions' to download a definitions file"
This message appears every time Vista starts. We think it has to do with the installation of a HP printer--a Photosmart C4140 which is not fully supported by Vista and won't completely install because of that. The original problem gave this error along with a message that Vista had recovered from a serious error and then would shut down in 1 minute--which it did. Continuously.
I uninstalled the printer and all was well. Funny thing is, the computer and printer were working up until maybe 5 days ago. Perhaps installing only the basic printer drivers for the printer would make this go away? The user says he has no need for scanning, so maybe that solution would work. What we would really like to know is what on earth does the error message mean. What definitions file? What program options?
Battery Indicator: Locate And Re-instate?
Jul 29, 2009On my son's Dell laptop (Vista Home Premium, SP2) his battery indicator icon has disappeared off his taskbar. I'm sure there's a way to find it and have it show up in the lower right taskbar location but can't help him find it since my Vista system is a desktop. How locate and re-instate this feature?

Apr 26, 2009I aquired a Gateway GT5058 with a bad hard drive from my neighbor and I will note it had Win XP Media Center Edition installed. The bad hard drive was fully accessible from my Vista machine but the primary partition gives an "error to load operating system". Visible inspection of the hard drive shows a melted area so I am shocked the drive was able to be accessed since it will not boot in it's native machine. I had an old 40 gig drive laying around so I used a recovery disk from my Gateway laptop and low and behold it installed just fine and the machine is fully functional so I want to get another drive for it.
First problem is that the previous owner might be able to locate the system recovery software or he might not...I will probably know this in a few days. If he can locate it then I have no problems but I am preparing to have to restore this machine an alternative way which is what I need help with...........

You'd think that information would come with your new Windows Vista Home Premium when you purchase it on your computer, but it doesn't. Does anyone know how to solve this mystery? May 15, 2010I have been wanting to address this problem for some time now but I have always felt that it is going to be difficult to understand and solve. Maybe, maybe not. I just looked at some of the previous FAQs on this subject and I don't fully understand their fixes. One fix tells me to go to change the Indexing somehow by disabling it. But when I go there, that box is inactive and cannot be changed apparently. So before I go further and not know what I am doing, I decided to post and ask for help. To illustrate my problem, let's say I am trying to find a file in my Downloads folder. I open my Downloads folder and can see the file I want. Yet when I do a Search for that file, the Search cannot locate it. It is as if the file doesn't exist. But I am looking right at it in Downloads!
I don't yet know how deep this problem goes, i.e. what if my file I wanted was a .dll file or something deep in the computer and I couldn't find it? Is the fix to this problem simply to disable Indexing? Or is there something more sinister going on with Search not being able to find anything?

Nov 29, 2009i was on a divx streaming site, watching a video and as the video finishes buffering i right click and go to "save video as" i then save the file (to my desktop, not a hidden folder or a protected operating folder) the file saves ok and the size of my c:/ drive goes down, so i know its on my laptop but when i close everything and go to desktop the file is not there! i've searched for it on my drive but the search doesnt find the file! i've tried saving the file to other folders (my documents, downloads etc)
i go back to the site and buffer the video again and right click, "save video as" again and in the browse window I SEE THE FILE!! (it also asks if i want to overwrite/replace the file) but still i dont see the file on my actual desktop or folder i saved it to! it isnt another users desktop its been saved to or some hidden folder, its my main desktop i am the only user on this laptop i've searched for viruses and such and tried alot of option changes but still dont find the file! i try to copy the file from the "save as" box but it says it cant or cant find the file (it is there because the size of my drive goes down and the file is visible in "save as" box) i've also tried to play the said divx file from the "save as" box but it still says it cant find the file
Turbocad Deluxe 15 : Not Saved
Aug 27, 2008I'm having some compatability issues with Turbocad and my vista premium home OS. whenever I try to save it crashes the program and says unhandled exception. access violation. i've tried the following.
disabled Data Execution Prevention.
disabled user acces control
i am running as an administrator
ive reinstalled it numerous times w/ firewall on and off
also it says that it needs a symols file for the binary codes to run debugger i am a machinist not a comp. guy and this laptop is brand new and was purchased just to run turbocad and quickbooks.
Saved Folder In My Documents Gone
Apr 13, 2008I have a vista home prenium on my advent 8315. On 13th april and turned on my laptop and began doing some homework. As there was a update on my widows update i finished my work and set it to update itself and i moved on to hand written work. As i use my laptop every day at "school" i have nearly a whole year of work saved on my laptop for my A levels. I saved all my work in a folder in my documents which i find now to be gone. I have tried using tune up utiliys "undelete" and "disc explorer" to find it yet it not there. One of the updates was for my office 2007 "sevice pack 1".

Mar 29, 2008I export a datafile from the internet and save it as an excel file. I click on browse and save it to users/name/mydocuments/directory. Then I go look for the file but cannot find it. I re-download it but keeps telling me that the file already exists, so I put a 2 at the end of the file name. Save that. Then I cannot find the first and second file.
I am logged on as the administrator. There are no other users on the computer except for a asp.net user. I am using Office 2003. There are no 2007 version loaded on the machine. Vista is Home Premium 32 bit I think. This also happened on my PC which has the same version of Vista.
Re Directing Media Saved To Second HD
Dec 19, 2007Slowly but surely I'm learning more and more about Vista interface and I like the idea behind the Media Center. However, as much as I like it I would prefer if all media was saved to my second hard-drive where I would like to keep all the media instead of where Vista saves them into the HD that I want to keep relatively clean as the system drive. What would be a workaround for: Keep using Media Center but forcing it to use say. Drive D as the storage space for media.
