View 8 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a new PC. Operating system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit. The problem is I have Quicken 2007 for my business and through your forum have found that the two do not mix! So I plan to remove Vista and replace it with XP so I can continue to run my business. My question being my Vista is 64 bit and my XP disk is just home basic, so I assume it is 32 bit. Can I replace vista 64 bit with XP 32 bit?

Will i have to re-activate my Vista even though the two boards are both based on the P45 chipset and similar design. Could I get pull it off or will Vista still read it as a new motherboard and have to go through all the re-activation grief with Microsoft?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been using a Wireless Desktop Elite keyboard and mouse set for several years. They share one wireless receiver. But over the last month my mouse is always double-clicking for every single click I make, and is driving me crazy! So I would like to just replace the mouse. Is it possible to replace the mouse with another MS wireless laser mouse, and use the same receiver from the original desktop set? I don't want to replace the whole set, as the keyboard works fine, and it cost me $100 when I bought it. :o/
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Vista Home Premium, so I do not have the CompletePC Backup feature, sadly. I just finished reinstalling VISTA and a ton of programs, only to realize stupidly that I am running out of hard disk space because of all the downloading I am doing. It would be pure hell to have to reinstall everything again.
I want to replace my hard drive with one with double the capacity. Can I copy / backup / whatever the entire c drive on to an external drive, then copy the entire contents back on to the new disk drive? Apparently, I have to purchase a product such as Acronis True Image Family.
My McAfee package is soon to expire. I want to replace it with a good free package.
I was thinking about Avast.
I use an ancient program to replace Windows native notepad. It is called 'Notpad'. Imagine typing that into a search, you get a suggestion that you meant 'Notepad' and no relevant info. The program is discontinued. However, it worked fine in Viats x64.
Until a few days ago. I cannot execute the program. It shows up in task manager. Clicking .txt files does nothimg. When I delete the notpad.exe and replace it with the original from zip, nothing.
When you open up a window (my computer)...you will notice the 'aero' logo in the bottom right corner of the window. How can that be removed or replaced...?

View 4 Replies View RelatedIn many of the tweaks on this site I have directed you to delete or replace a system file. In Windows Vista this is not always as easy as it sounds since the system files are protected better by the file system than in XP. There are two steps that you need to do in order to be able to replace or delete a system file:First you need to take ownership of the file. Run takeown /f "path and file name" to take ownership from a command prompt.Next, you need to give your account full control permissions on the file. Run cacls "path and file name" /G <your username>:F to get full control from a command prompt....

Now, using the spacebar moves to the next message (not the next *unread* message, just the next message in the queue.) Is there a new keystroke to replace the spacebar that scrolls the message instead of moving to the next message?
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently, after varying times of general computer usage (internet, e-mail) ranging from 5 minutes to an hour, I'll get a BSOD, with the above title. I'll attach the dump files, and include the code from it below. I've tried some troubleshooting of my own. I've run memtest86+ on each of my 4 1-gig RAM modules, all clean. I've run Prime95, clean. I've installed new video drivers. I've run a diskcheck, and used Western Digital's diagnostic utility, clean. The culprit always is ntfs.sys. Should I try to repair my windows, or replace the ntfs.sys with a new one?. Also, I don't have any readboost of USB storage devices plugged in.

I have 2 accounts on my Vista Home Premium machine. One is an admin account with password and the other is a standard account without password (UAC off). I have multiple internal hard drives some of which has folders that I want only my admin account to access. I have denied all permissions for the standard account to these folders.
When I login as the standard user and try to open these same folders I get a pop up message saying that I don't have permission to access them and to click “continue” for access. Then I get a second message saying the same thing but there is a clickable link at the bottom to the "security tab" and it's suggesting to use to gain access. Once I click on that I get another "You don't have permission to change security setting" message in the folder properties window under the security tab.
At the bottom of that window it's also suggesting to click on the "Advanced" button for special permissions which will lead to taking the ownership from the admin account under the "Owner" tab by clicking "Edit", thus allowing full access to the contents of those folders. Does that make sense to anyone? I also noticed that the standard account has the ability to change the type to an administrator account from “User Accounts” in Control panel, is that normal?
After I modified HOSTS file in another directory I can not replace the one on windows/system32/drivers/etc. He account I use is administrator. I have windows vista home premiun SP1. By the way a virus altered HOSTS file and can not connect to internet with firefox, I added 127.0.0.1 to the file in order to make it work.

It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.
