Jun 16, 2009Well i am going to backup my C Drive incase my PC encounter failure one day. How should i do it? I cannot find the topic that teaches you how to backup anymore..

Hard Drive Failure?
May 13, 2008I purchased a HP Media Center PC approx 16 months ago. Shortly after I purchased it I started getting what appeared to be an intermittent hard disk error - the screen would suddenly go black, system would attempt to reboot and I would get a message in the lines of "SMART FAILURE predicted... Windows detected a hard disk problem... Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent." Then it gives some options to to go to the BIOS or to continue. Sometimes I can reboot immediately (usually reboots to safe mode first, then will reboot normal), other times I need to reattempt several times before it will actually reboot (the SMART FAILURE screen pops up each reattempt). Once I am able to reboot it's pretty unpredicatable when this screen will show up again...
sometimes a day or so later, other times it would be stable for a few weeks.... the reason I was able to 'test' for a while is 1.... after the problem occurs I backed up and removed all important data from the drive and 2... since the computer was
only a few months old HP was sending me a replacement warranty drive. Once I recieved the replacement drive I created an image of the original drive, copied it to the new drive and sent the 'faulty' drive back to HP. I assumed everything was fine, but the problem started occuring about 4 months later. So again, I made sure everything was backed up, created an image & contacted HP for another warranty drive. Once again, everything worked fine... for a while. Now, one year later out of the blue this 'hard drive failure is imminent' problem is popping up again...........
Main Hard Drive Failure
Mar 8, 2009The main hard drive on my pc that has the operating system on and everything is begining to fail and i need to sort it out before i cant use the disk anymore. The disk is in warrenty so i will be able to get it replaced but not all the things on it.
How can i backup my operating system and all of the programs and files on it, i have another hard drive that i can use as a backup but im not sure how to do it.
Hard Drive Failure After Sleep
Aug 14, 20091. Put computer to sleep. (iffy - sometimes resets resolution, 1-2 times caused harmless BSOD)
2. On wake up, computer shows distorted image and then BSODs.
3. resets to bios, but doesn't complete the bios progressbar (not sure if this is for POST)
4. Hard Drive(s) start to click.
I may be wrong, but seems like a simple case of hard drive failure, but it was directly caused by Vista, which has been known to have problems with Sleep. I don't remember checking/signing any Vista-hardware liability waiver, so is Microsoft liable for the hard drive failure since the risk was not eliminated by a critical update?
Raid Mirror Drive Failure
Jun 3, 2008First, my appologies: I tried a HW group first with this question with no response. I know some folks here are knowledable about Promise RAID. I should have x-posted instead of multi-posting, but I thought I'd get an answer in the other group.Anyway...I have a mirrored setup on a Promise RAID built-in controller. One disk wentbad. I removed it. The remaining disk continues to operate normally - fornow. However, I get a "critical" warning from the RAID controller every time I boot - but it does succeed without issues.
I would like to eliminate this warning and continue with only one disk.Preferably in a single-disk non-RAID config. But, whatever.How can I do that? Do I have to rebuild from scratch? What happens if I use [ctrl-F] to enter the RAID management and simply "delete the array"? Will I be able to reconfigure to boot from that remaining disk or will it require to be rebuilt completely as a single IDE?
Back Up To External Hard Drive Failure
Apr 20, 2008I am trying to back up to a WD Passport 250gb usb drive. Every time it fails stating file 0x80070002 cant be found. I returned the drive to the store and replaced it, but I still get the same failure. Could I have gotten 2 bad drives or is there something I can do/chnge in Vista to correct this?

Jul 30, 2008went to get a new laptop and founds a nice mew Toshiba laptop (have to check model number) got the laptop home an started up fine worked fine also got thee system online and with all the anti virus set up (used the 90 day Norton trial) worked fine next day I stared the laptop up and the worked fine for a wile then went into a full crash with nothing responding forced a reboot look fine bios came up vista went to load the bar stuck and then restarted then kept doing this and no hard drive activity left the machine
and still stayed like this tried restore and start-up recovery as the pc was loading in safe mode the laptop did start the reload of the hard drive after that said was successful rebooted and did not want to load up ,took the pc back and checked the machine out they could not fix there machine the man told me the machine was not going to work and sated to fill out a Toshiba doa form stating that hard drive failure was the cause, that left me the option to change the laptop or get my money back and chose the get money back to see what i could get else were still looking I am thinking of getting a Sony vairo instead
Hard Disk Drive Failure Working
Nov 7, 2008I have 2 hard disk drives: Seagate 1000GB 7200.11 32MB Western Digital 150GB 10KRPM 16MB and two days ago, the Seagate hard drive isnt being recognized/seen by the computer. I have an Asus P5Q3 Deluxe mother board. A week before this problem I was getting alot of BSOD's and freezes, turned out to be faulty RAM, but added this in case it might help. I have never had this problem before... I unplugged and replugged the hard drive, and switched a cord that links it to the motherboard. I have also tried putting the cord into a different SATA port but it didnt work, I didnt try a diff power cord yet, but I will see if it works or not and post it PS - I'm not very computer technical or w/e, but

Mar 24, 2010Think my HD may be failing. First, a few black screens have occurred on bootup. After normal shut down this A.M., it booted into the BIOS screen, after noisy boot. I simultaneously pressed Ctrl + Alt + Del expecting to get Task Manager. Got Advanced Options Menu. Pressed enter, booted to Windows normally. And just now, got louder than usual "whirring" noise on bootup, which went on to boot into Windows normally.
Question is: What would my options be if the Drive totally fails? I've got Personal Data saved. And all I have is Recovery Disks for this laptop. Would those be able to be installed on a new Drive if needed. I'm under the impression that I have a Smart Drive. Wouldn't that warn me if the Drive was failing? No warnings yet! And what type of Warning should I look for? So, how should I prepare for HD failure?
Logon Process Failure, Failure - Security Options
Sep 20, 2009i was on Internet earlier today when i noticed that the videos were already completed buferring, but the videos were lagging; and firefox was performing kind of slow. i decided to re-start my computer. after re-starting the computer the logon process took extremely long, then an error message appeared: logon process has failed to create the security options dialog. failure - security options. i waited for the desktop to appear, then re-started again. but the perofrmance of the logon is still extremely slow. any suggestions?

May 2, 2008I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.

Jan 2, 2010I'm running Vista on a PC that has a hd that has been formated into 3 discrete drives.Vista is loaded onto the C drive, programmes are loaded onto the d drive while i have my data stored on my E drive. By default any documents I save are directed towards My Documents on the C drive - how I go about changing that so the default is my Documents on the E drive?

Mar 23, 2008When will Microsoft fix sfc /scannow? SFC (system file checker) returns a corrupt files found but cant fix message on new PCs. I reformated the HD and restored my Vista OS to factory. I tested a number of new laptops from various manufactures and they all have the same error message. I called Microsoft support and tier 2 support spent days then told me that the OEMs are messing up Vista. Did the OEMs add some spyware or modify the SFC utility? Why isn't there a fix for this very important repair utility?

2 HDD And Boot Failure
Feb 17, 2009I have two 500GB HDD's. I have installed vista on first one and I am using the second one for just storing my data. Today, I wanted to unplug the second HDD [depot disk] but after unpluging it my sistem gave me an error: "Disk Error: Please Insert System Dısk" Why? My OS is not instaled on that one. Then I pluged it and opened vista and saw the following picture:
Vista sees my second HDD [D:] as a system disk. What is the problem? Was vista installed on the other HDD also when I installing vista since they were both connected?

Feb 26, 2009I getting a notification on the bottom bar right hand side saying backup failure. When i click on this, "Backup status & configuration" window appears, which says
The Backup did not complete succesfully
CATASTROPHIC FAILURE (0x8000FFFF).
So then if i try and do a a back up from control panel. a green bar appears and then go's red completely.
Finaly i get the same message on the bottom right hand side.
HP Oem Activation Failure
Aug 10, 2009I have a 2 month old HP tx2 notebook. It activated fine when first booted. Used it abouy a month and IE crashed with a BSOD, and upon recovery I have a notice on the bottom of the desktop that it says this copy of windows in not genuine. When I reboot it says I must activate. When I try it fails and the only options are new product key or contact HP. I called HP and they said to use the key off the bottom of the computer which does not work. They then want me to do a complete reinstall which is quite unacceptible with all the work it took to get this new machine loaded to work with.
Can i buy a new license and be sure it is going to take. Buying a new copy of home premium unfair but is way better than all the work I would have to do otherwise. The OS is home premium 64 bit. I would not want to install a new copy because of the driver issues (touchsmart), I just want to use the key. When I try to activate I get: Buy new product key online. Try a different product key Contact Hewlett-Packard to help resolve this proble Have tried option 2 and 3 to no avail.
I would try option 1 if I could be assured it would work without loss of data. HP says to reinstall the OS. They told me Microsoft does not support OEM installs. Why not? There is no phone option. when I try to input a new key I get an 0xC004E003 error. Updates work fine and all my software works as well.The desktop background does not work and it has the not genuine at the right bottom corner. There does not seem to be a count down timer either.
PC Repair Failure
Apr 6, 2008I'm currently having a problem with my bosses PC. It will not boot into Vista. I have booted into safe mode and tried to rool it back to a restore point. This has not helped. I have also tried using Startup Repair on the Vista DVD which fails.....

Mar 11, 2009my computer is a Toshiba Satellite, and it will not install updates or shutdown properly. When I try to shut it down properly it says configuring updates I left it like this for a couple of hours and it made no difference. I am writing this thread on it now, and it runs perfectly other than the updates. It has flashed me a Blue Screen twice, and has never had this problem before. 1) Times to load Windows very long respect XP with a fast pc using CPU Intel DC2 4 2.40 GHz 4GB ram
2) Some applications don't load caused by UAC but not every startup
3) Some applications are "forget" to load or not visible in the tray
4) error messages of load failure appear but not at every startup
5) The little arrow on the tray bar that hide programs 1 time appear and 1 time don't appear and the programs are the same running and visible on the traybar. Perhaps the SP1 has resolved these problems? I use the italian version of Vista 32.
Backup Failure
Jan 15, 2008I am using Vista Home Premium. I tried to back up my hard drive to a Western Digital removable HD using Vista Backup and Restore. The backup failed and I got a message that read: "The backup target drive G: failed with the following error: The backup disk has a corrupted file system. Fix it using the disk error checking tool or choose a different backup location. (0x81000008)" I cannot find "the disk error checking tool". I have backed up using this removable HD a couple of times already.

Checked all devices to ensure none have the "wake on" feature activated. When I select hibernate, the screen goes black for a few seconds then the logon menu is presented. Hibernation never occurs.

Mar 11, 2009I want to perhaps lower the space for the shadow storage. I'm running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I have run cmd as administrator (right click -> Run as administator). Whenever I put in vssadmin list shadowstorage an error comes up (see picture).
P.S: I've uninstalled daemon tool's to see if that was the cause, didn't work. I've also uninstalled SP1, didn't work, reinstalled SP1, didn't work. I'm not sure what the problem is. The third picture was made to show there is no System Restore in the System Tools area.
Task Scheduler Failure

Boot Failure - Never Gets To Login
Mar 28, 2008I have a 3month old PC - clean installed with Vista Home Prem OEM. As of 8 days ago will not finish booting - simply ends with a mouse pointer on a black screen (pointer moves when mouse is moved). Have tried - everything - full memory diagnostics, chkdsk /r, System restore (found no restore points), all SAFE modes, Last good config. In place upgrade is disabled as it is an OEM build. Intel P35 chipset MB, E6850 CPU. No new hardware installed. No bug check codes displayed (no blue screen). Was fully up to date with WU, and drivers - and was running well since built. It is as if the profile is corrupt - but there was no indication of a problem. If this was Win XP I would do a Repair Install. Obviously no way to do that in Vista. This was before SP1 came out this week. The drive has been fully scanned for virii and spyware (HDD added to a clean working system and scanned), came up clean. I do not want to give up and clean install - there has to be another way. I have been a PC tech since 1986 - and VERY RARELY give up.
