I had Apache server installed on Vista Home Premium and it worked fine until the Vista security update 2 days ago. Something is blocking port 80. I ran netstat -ano and find out it is PID 4 which is System is using port 80, but I have no idea which one just added with the update to stop the service.
Defender alerts me that it is blocking some start-up programs (little yellow speech-bubble in sys-tray says "Click here to see which programs are being blocked"). When I click the alert it opens Defender, but there is no indication of which program has been blocked. How can I find out?
I have evga motherboard with built in Realtek HD audio (ALC883). Board features 2 ports for digital audio (optical and coaxial). and according to manual both are output. However when installed vista drivers one of the ports has been chosen as digital output (optical) and another as digital input (coax) (i can see that when i hover the mouse over the jacks in "Realtek HD audio manager") Is there any way to make the coaxial port as an output port instead of optical? My my HT reciver has no free optical ports so i have to use coax to get some sound from the computer.
I use a AT&T exspress aircard and can't send mail out through windows mail on Vista. Do I need to change my outgoing mail port from 25 to another port number? If so what port or how do I obtain that info?
Is there a way to block the ads in windows mail without having to turn off Javascript every time I go into my account ? I am currently running adblock plus but it doesn't cut it.
On my x64 box, TFS power tools was conflicting with Office Communicator. So I blocked Office Communictor from the startup sequence. As I expected, at startup I would get a message "Blocked startup programs" with the option to "run blocked program" if I want to launch Office Communicator explicitly. Good.
Then I uninstalled TFS power tools, and decided to unblock Office Communicator, so it can run at startup again. Unfortunately, the Office Communicator app shows as "Permitted," but is still being blocked at startup.
In other words, I can't unblock Office Communicator. Vista says it is "permitted", but it is not permitted at startup. I tried disabling and re-enabling it, to see if it would clear up, but no good.
How do I force it to be unblocked so that it will run at startup?
My Dad has a laptop running Windows Vista and he is forever installing stupid programs which he then gets me to remove as they have messed up his computer in some way. With this in mind, I was wondering if there is a way that I can somehow put a block on him installing new programs on Windows?
over the last few months I have been getting unwanted Emails. all of them objectionable,a lot of them bordering on the pornographic. I can receive five or more each day. I send each one to the blacklist but more come from obscure domains and addresses. Examples are:-
i got sent some world of warcraft patches through a friend on MSN...we done it on my lan so it went alot quicker, they sent fine but when i try open the files i get this error message; Windows has found this file Potentially harmful, to help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file.

In Windows Mail, I have the setting to block images set to on, so, whenever a message in html format arrives, if it has images and the sender was not set as trustable yet, it will block the images.
But, funny side is that the feature seems not to work for the junk emails which makes no sense at all. All my junk emails, if in html format and with images, images will be shown despite the setting.
Am I missing some other setting or this is supposed to be the right although odd behaviour for Windows Mail?
I have altered my hosts file on both an XP and Vista computer. The XP computer correctly blocks the unwanted websites ("Page cannot be displayed") but the same exact hosts file on the vista computer shows the sites.
I have been trying to connect a new Vista laptop to an old static IP4 network. The Vista firewall is blocking me. It is a public IP address (I'm not sure what that means), which apparently is the problem. My IP address starts with 207.191... Does that make sense to anyone? I need to know how to unblock this address or just take down the firewall all together. I'll only be connected to that network for a few hours a week, so temporarily removing the firewall wouldn't be too bad.
I run the Asus AI prpgram on startup. This is supposed to allow me to modify motherboard and CPU settings. However Defender will always prevent this program from running. There not appear to be any way to tell defender to stop blocking this program at startup.
Several weeks ago UAC started blocking access to my root drive. Not sure if it occured after an update or not. I have restored to about 2 months earlier but the problem persists. Tried TweakUAC but no change. I'm not sure modifying the Regestry is the way to go. Hate to have to reinstal and start over.
I am having trouble with my wireless internet. When i was home over the Christmas break, I attempted to forward my port on my wireless internet at home so my router would allow me to access some of my programs (the router had a firewall on it blocking these programs). Ever since then, the only place i can access wireless internet is only at my house, nowhere ele. When i go other places, I can find connections and connect to them, but i can only connect to the network part of it, not the internet. For example, when I go to the Network and Sharing Center, it will show the connection between my computer and the network working properly, but then the line between the Network and the Internet has a Red X through it and the Internet Globe is grey. When i troubleshoot, it says it cannot contact my server / ISP, and it shows that the ISP is the one from my wireless at home.
my son retuned home this weekend with his HP Compaq CQ61 Notebook and told me his dongles, Itouch and stuff dont work? told me his mum had it at a shop and the guy did a restore and couldn't find the problem or fix it? I wonder what kind off shop it was? so i took a look and looks like someone has try'd to put something or FORCE something into USB port? i'v uploaded a pic from silly phone sorry about Quality but u can see that the port on the right is broken? AKA Wont work now the port on the left looks ok, so i try'd to hook up ex HD, Iphone and nothing works ? no power to device and PnP dont find anything new ?
i checked Device Manager and states that Drivers are ok and up to date? so the right one is gone and needs replaced i thought the left one would still work but seems not to ? should it?
I just bought the XFX GeForce 8400 GS from Amazon. I noticed that there is no DVI or VGA port it said DMS-59 on it, what is that and can I run DVI on it? Amazon.com: XFX PVT86SWML4 GeForce 8400GS 256MB GDDR2 DMS-59 Dual DVI Low Profile Monitor Solution PCI Express x16 Video Card: Electronics
My Son's computer was working yesterday and this morning he can't surf using IE 8 or Firefox. It appears Port 80 is being blocked. I have disabled the firewall temporarily and this did not resolve the issue. I did the "netsh winsock reset" and this did not fix the problem. I have reset my router with no change. I am able to ping the DNS, the Default router and his IP address within the command window. I can also ping yahoo.com, google.com within the command window, but can't reach them with either browser. He did not have System Restore enabled, so I can't use that as a solution. Can the group recommend some options for me to try? He is using Vista Home Premium, and a wireless card. I can also see ALL GREEN when I open up the Network Sharing tool. There is a green line between his IP and the Wireless Card and green line between the Wireless Card and the Internet.
Pretty strange that I couldn't find one google result about WHERE a USB 2.0 port is, everything is "how do I know I have USB 2.0" and not actually where they are on the computer. Some may say well, just plug in a USB 2.0 usb and see what happens.
However my USB Drive has ALWAYS been saying I'm plugging it in in a port that does not support USB 2.0. I've done this at my college and the same bs occurs. This does not occur for any of my USB drives, not even my 16G one. Should also mention that whenever I try to access the USB drive, it says "Drive E not formatted, would you like to format it now?" Obviously I click no. This by the way has nothing to do with my recent virus issues. This particular USB drive has been like this for years now.-
in vista, I found that once I deleted the WSD printer icon, in the server property, the WSD port stays here, and I can't delete it, I should reboot my PC for deleting it, So I want to know why it's locked, and if I want handle this WSD port, how can I do it?
I am curious about the change to port 587. After upgrading to Vista SP1, using Windows Mail, I had the same problem as a few on this board, but only with my roadrunner service. I could receive mails. However, I could send e-mails that were very short (read one or two lines), but anything of any length and I got the usual message of server connection unexpectly closed. I turned off my antivirus program completely and still got the message and could not send e-mails of any basic length. However, I did try the suggestion in a previous thread of changing the smtp port to 587 (even though it appeared to be a comcast network) and, so far, it appears to solve my problem with roadrunner (knock on wood).
I am using windows XP and i want to disable the usb port (i dont want it to detect flash memories or external storage devices) but at the same time i want it to detect the usb printer, so i cant totally disable the usb port ...
i miss the old audio manger when it pop's up a balloon asking you what that port will be. i need to change my computer rear line in to headphones or speakers.
Vista Home Premium SP1. Is it possible to use more than one device in a single USB port? The reason I ask is that I have five USB ports, four at the back and one at the front. As the one at the front is more accessible, I use this for a Joystick I occasionally use. Can I also use this same port for another device, in this case an MP3 player, not at same time?
I'm asking the right question ...I have an older application (circa 2002) that connects to a VHF radio thru a serial or USB cable. The software only has provisions for communicating with the radio thru COM's 1 thru 4. Is there some way to emulate or dedicate a COM port thru a USB connection?
I have an Acer laptop with Vista Home and want to get an MPV film clip on it, from a brief segment of a talk show on my Tivo. I have a Dazzle plugged into a USB port, and have installed drivers that device manager shows to be working correctly. "Help" says I can use USB as a source, but I cannot find a way.
