Nov 9, 2009I know this isn't exactly the right group but I couldn't find a windows7 news group. I bought a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD off ebay (don't laugh), but what I actually got I'm not sure is legal so I'd appreciate some advice before doing the return/refund thing. The disc was advertised as genuine with a product key. When it arrived however this DVD is an obvious copy burnt on a PC, not a factory made disc. There was no product key but a piece of paper with activation instructions. at this url is a picture of the DVD and also a scan of the instructions that came with it. The activation instructions were printed on an A4 piece of paper.

Jun 27, 2009I've had this problem before, but it went away when I installed the latest service pack update. I got it again about a week ago, though, and there were no new service packs to install, so I'm not quite sure how to go about fixing it. The message at the bottom of the screen is: "Build 6002, This copy of Windows is not genuine." I also get a pop-up box saying "you may be a victim of product counterfitting" when I start up my computer.
I tried looking at some of the other threads here relating to this subject, but they didn't seem to work for me. I've tried two main solutions so far, neither of which worked. The first was to restore the licensing file through the cmd prompt, then rebooting twice (found that solution THIS COPY OF WINDOWS IS NOT GENUINE - WHY? there), the second was to type slui.exe 4 into the search bar and hope for a telephone number to activate by phone, which seems to work for some people. I can't get the telephone number to show up, though. It just gives me the screen to buy a new product key online, try a different one, or a link to the Help box on validation. Office Genuine: Contains Another Folder
May 15, 2010I just finished restoring my computer and installing updates and my office software asked to validate itself over the internet and when it was done it left a folder called Office Genuine Advantage in my user folder. My office is genuine so this isn't a hide the notification thing or anything, just that there is an annoying folder in my user folder. All it contains is another folder (Data) which itself contains only one file, oaddin.dat. Can I delete this folder or is it and the one file there for a reason?

RTM, Not Viewed As A Genuine Vista Build?
Mar 26, 2008I recently ordered 500 Vista desktops and 150 Vista laptops from a vendor preloaded with a RTM edition of Vista Business. When we started loading Office 2007 this week, the Windows Installer stopped four times with errors. Vista gave a message saying we should upgrade to the retail version of Vista (I wish I could send a screenshot). After checking the build level we saw it was build 6000. My team checked some MSDN blogs and saw build 6000 is not viewed as a genuine Vista build. What do I do?! If this is the case, I'm not going to be able to meet my SLA with my Enterprise users.

And yes I'm telling the truth, it really is my step-brother with the problem, and not just me using him as a scapegoat to save my e-pride . But anyway I told him a thousand times to look for help online, but every time he just answers with something nonsensical like "No I shouldn't have to. Bill Gates should just make better hardware." And I'm just like there are so many things wrong with that statement I don't know where to start. So I decided to make the topic for him since him complaining about it nonstop won't fix it. I'll provide as much info as I can, but I'm not sure if it'll prove useful. It would be much better if he would just make a topic, so he could go into more detail but it's not like he listens to me.

This takes up the whole screen and I cannot exit unless I press OK. After my desktop is fully loaded a message comes up saying that Windows Aero has stopped working, you may be a victim of counterfeiting. There is then a link which takes me to Genuine Microsoft Software. I then run the validation test and pass. Also sometimes there is a message in white writing in the corner of my desktop which says:

I did that from the sticker on the copmuter, but I still have a littel message in the bottom right of my desktop screen that says "Windows Vista BUild 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine". Apr 3, 2008About 40% of the time when I either choose HIBERNATE or the standard SHUT DOWN, the computer just keeps on running. Although it seems WINDOW has shut down, the "ON" light is still on and I can hear the fan running. When this happens I am left with no other option but to use the "emergency shut down" method - pressing the ON button for more than 4 seconds (ASUS laptop, using Vista Home Premium). Presumably this method would damage the computer in some ways in the long run?
I assume WINDOW is shut down because the next time when I turn on the computer it doesn't say the "WINDOW is not properly shut down". So can any kind souls please help me with this annoying problem of turning off the computer completely?

Jun 5, 2009I just read that BestBuy was going to offter at its Website a $49.00 Window 7 Upgrade for Vista Home Prem users. This offer would only be available from 6/26 for 16 days.....
Over the past 6 months I have read several articles about Microsoft offering exisitng Vista Users an upgrade to Windows 7 for a discounted price, and even maybe...for free.
I am posting this to see what others perhaps know about the Upgrade....whether this would be the right time to take advantage of the Upgrade because it may not be offered again. I would hate not to take advantage of the $49.00 Upgrade and find its not offered again, or, take advantage of it now to find its offered later at a cheaper price.

It tries to fix the problem when you restart but it can’t, so I downloaded the recovery disk and I tried system restore but it says no previous restore points, the system was never baked up either

Jul 9, 2007I've recently downloaded a new software called Advanced Windows Care Professional. This software, as it mentions is compatible with windows vista (I'm running Home Premium) and keeps the system clean and running fast at all times. However, after using this software for a few days, I realized that every time I run a scan through my computer and "repair" specified problems with the machine, some number of my system's configuration gets changed or perhaps, deleted. For a certain period of time, it turned off my Windows Security Center; while recently, all my window animations disappeared. (Eg. Window fading away when I close it).
After searching through the net, I discovered a solution to fix my first problem. That is, running through the Services.msc file and enabling the Windows Security Center option. Being increasingly baffled and perplexed now, I'm just wondering if my second problem is in any way related to my Services.msc file and is there any way to fix this problem of mine.

Apr 15, 2009Don't know if this is - dare I say - "a bug" in IE. Try this (or should I say don't try this) at home folks. In order to attempt to fix my prob which detailed in the previous posts (titled "FUNNY THING HAPPENS WHEN DOWNLOADING ZIP FILE" in IE General Forum), I tried anything, and played with a few thing. This is what I did. I clicked on a zip file and associated with IE program (I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even know how to do that again. Don't ask me to retrace my steps), and see what happens, if you dare!!!!!! If you can replicate what I did, you should see IE windows pops up endlessly. Gone bersek, in other words. Anyway, this is not what I'm concerned (although Microsoft should certainly looks into it). I have posted this question in one form or another. When I tried to download a ZIP file from any website, I don't get a download window, and instead I get some non-standard actions.
Since it ONLY happens when I download a ZIP file, It slowly dawn on me (I'm pretty slow) that the issue has to do with my ZIP file association, hence the reason why I played with the ZIP file assocation and get this scary scenario of IE gone hysterical. Pre-IE6, I can fix this issue with a file association in the "File/Folder View and Search Option" , which was drastically altered in the subsequent version of IE leaving me confused and helpless. I have posted several times and nobody can answer my question. Perhaps because this issue seems to be an IE-related, but in fact it is not. So posting this question in IE forum won't get me the right expertise. I posted this question in Vista General form before, and was told that i get get better response if I posted in IE GEenral. I'm absolutely frustrated with this prob.
Slow Window
May 22, 2007I just built a resonably fast machine: I installed Vista64, updated drivers for chipset, graphics and soundcard. Installed all Vista64 updates and installed Office 2007. No other apps, drivers, etc installed yet. All hardware is recognized by system and appears functioning correctly. Performance is terrible to the point the machine is unusable. Some example/benchmarks:
- Time to boot (POST to Vista login): 13 minutes
- Time to respond to simple CTRL-ALT-DEL: 35 seconds
- System sounds (e.g. alert beeps) play delayed, garbled and broken up.
- Time to install Vista update: 5 hrs, 45 minutes
- Time to start internet explorer, 3 minutes
There are alot of posts of people with slow Vista, but none that I've seen this bad and on this type of near top of line hardware. My CPU usage is constantly running 50-100%, but no one process seems to be hogging CPU. Its the normal kinds of processes that are each consuming a chunk of it (explorer, svchost, etc.). Wierd thing is that the Vista performance assessment gives my machine a 5.2 every time I run it (5.9 graphics, 5.9 disk, 5.5 memory, and 5.2 processor).
