Window Animations Gone?
Jul 9, 2007
I've recently downloaded a new software called Advanced Windows Care Professional. This software, as it mentions is compatible with windows vista (I'm running Home Premium) and keeps the system clean and running fast at all times. However, after using this software for a few days, I realized that every time I run a scan through my computer and "repair" specified problems with the machine, some number of my system's configuration gets changed or perhaps, deleted. For a certain period of time, it turned off my Windows Security Center; while recently, all my window animations disappeared. (Eg. Window fading away when I close it).
After searching through the net, I discovered a solution to fix my first problem. That is, running through the Services.msc file and enabling the Windows Security Center option. Being increasingly baffled and perplexed now, I'm just wondering if my second problem is in any way related to my Services.msc file and is there any way to fix this problem of mine.

I work in different 3D programs and I have never had this problem before, and it only happens in Vista. When I create an image, my programs create the image, and I can save it with no problem. When I create an animation, the programs need to save the file after it creates each frame. Vista is blocking those programs from doing
this, and I need to have them allowed to create and save these files constantly. I like the security that Vista has, but is there any way to allow just certain programs to do this while keeping that security feature on for everything else?

For those of you have have the aero glass interface on your computer, it is possible to hold down the shift key while closing, opening, and minimizing a windows to see the animation in slow motion. If you would like to test this out, just follow the steps below:
Open up Regedit....

The new animations in Windows Vista look great for the first month or so but then they can become an annoyance since they feel like they increase the amount of time it takes to minimize and maximize a window. If you can live without the minimize and maximize animations that you can bring back the super fast feeling of your windows instantly disappearing and appearing by disabling the min/max animations.
Follow the steps below to make your windows faster: ...

Can anyone explain this: 3219. The screenshot shows the folder view (in Windows Explorer), and a directory listing (in a Command Line window). Why is the Explorer window showing different filenames than the command line window? It's not so much of an issue, as I'm currently completing a scheduled backup of this drive using Nero Burning ROM, and will be formatting it soon.

About 40% of the time when I either choose HIBERNATE or the standard SHUT DOWN, the computer just keeps on running. Although it seems WINDOW has shut down, the "ON" light is still on and I can hear the fan running. When this happens I am left with no other option but to use the "emergency shut down" method - pressing the ON button for more than 4 seconds (ASUS laptop, using Vista Home Premium). Presumably this method would damage the computer in some ways in the long run?
I assume WINDOW is shut down because the next time when I turn on the computer it doesn't say the "WINDOW is not properly shut down". So can any kind souls please help me with this annoying problem of turning off the computer completely?

I just read that BestBuy was going to offter at its Website a $49.00 Window 7 Upgrade for Vista Home Prem users. This offer would only be available from 6/26 for 16 days.....
Over the past 6 months I have read several articles about Microsoft offering exisitng Vista Users an upgrade to Windows 7 for a discounted price, and even maybe...for free.
I am posting this to see what others perhaps know about the Upgrade....whether this would be the right time to take advantage of the Upgrade because it may not be offered again. I would hate not to take advantage of the $49.00 Upgrade and find its not offered again, or, take advantage of it now to find its offered later at a cheaper price.

I need some advise on fixing windows Vista Ultimate 32bit on a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5934 Laptop
The one year warranty expired and did not come with any disks according to my sister-in-law and all my computers still run XP. The problem seems to be that windows does not load, she told me that when the computer was turned on it was giving messages that some system files did not load. Missing or corrupted
It tries to fix the problem when you restart but it can’t, so I downloaded the recovery disk and I tried system restore but it says no previous restore points, the system was never baked up either
Can anything be done or does she have to buy new Vista disk and drivers from Toshiba?

Don't know if this is - dare I say - "a bug" in IE. Try this (or should I say don't try this) at home folks. In order to attempt to fix my prob which detailed in the previous posts (titled "FUNNY THING HAPPENS WHEN DOWNLOADING ZIP FILE" in IE General Forum), I tried anything, and played with a few thing. This is what I did. I clicked on a zip file and associated with IE program (I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even know how to do that again. Don't ask me to retrace my steps), and see what happens, if you dare!!!!!! If you can replicate what I did, you should see IE windows pops up endlessly. Gone bersek, in other words. Anyway, this is not what I'm concerned (although Microsoft should certainly looks into it). I have posted this question in one form or another. When I tried to download a ZIP file from any website, I don't get a download window, and instead I get some non-standard actions.
Since it ONLY happens when I download a ZIP file, It slowly dawn on me (I'm pretty slow) that the issue has to do with my ZIP file association, hence the reason why I played with the ZIP file assocation and get this scary scenario of IE gone hysterical. Pre-IE6, I can fix this issue with a file association in the "File/Folder View and Search Option" , which was drastically altered in the subsequent version of IE leaving me confused and helpless. I have posted several times and nobody can answer my question. Perhaps because this issue seems to be an IE-related, but in fact it is not. So posting this question in IE forum won't get me the right expertise. I posted this question in Vista General form before, and was told that i get get better response if I posted in IE GEenral. I'm absolutely frustrated with this prob.

I just built a resonably fast machine: I installed Vista64, updated drivers for chipset, graphics and soundcard. Installed all Vista64 updates and installed Office 2007. No other apps, drivers, etc installed yet. All hardware is recognized by system and appears functioning correctly. Performance is terrible to the point the machine is unusable. Some example/benchmarks:
- Time to boot (POST to Vista login): 13 minutes
- Time to respond to simple CTRL-ALT-DEL: 35 seconds
- System sounds (e.g. alert beeps) play delayed, garbled and broken up.
- Time to install Vista update: 5 hrs, 45 minutes
- Time to start internet explorer, 3 minutes
There are alot of posts of people with slow Vista, but none that I've seen this bad and on this type of near top of line hardware. My CPU usage is constantly running 50-100%, but no one process seems to be hogging CPU. Its the normal kinds of processes that are each consuming a chunk of it (explorer, svchost, etc.). Wierd thing is that the Vista performance assessment gives my machine a 5.2 every time I run it (5.9 graphics, 5.9 disk, 5.5 memory, and 5.2 processor).

Windows 7 includes the new Aero Snap feature that allows you to easily work with multiple windows at once by neatly sizing both windows automatically. For Windows Vista and XP users a cool utility called FreeSnap will provide much of the same functionality with a exhaustive list of keyboard shortcuts.
To get started, download the latest version of FreeSnap.
Once you have FreeSnap installed and running you will have the following keyboard shortcuts available to you:
Win key + Up Arrow – Snap top
Win key + Down arrow – Snap bottom
Win key + Left arrow – Snap left
Win key + Right arrow – Snap right
Win key + Home - Move to top-left corner
Win key + Page Up – Move to top-right corner
Win key + End – Move to bottom –left corner
Win key + Page Down – Move to bottom-right corner
Win key + 5 – Center window/next monitor
Win key + Plus – Resize up
Win key + Minus – Resize down
Win key + Shift + Up arrow – Grow top
Win key + Shift + Down arrow – Grow bottom
Win key + Shift + Left arrow – Grow left
Win key + Shift + Right arrow – Grow right
Win key + Ctrl + Up arrow – Shrink top
Win key + Ctrl + Down arrow – Shrink bottom
Win key + Ctrl + Left arrow – Shrink left
Win key + Ctrl + Right arrow – Shrink right
Win key + . (period) – Minimize
Win key + Enter – Maximize
Win key + / – Close
Win key +? – Help

Is there any way to setup the UAC so that it will allow designate programs without getting the very irritating pop up window, or program crash that occurs in some cases where the window doesn't pop up. I have tried just turning it off, but it appears Defender turns it right back on again.
I suppose the next step is to turn off Defender.
I understand why this security feature exists, but it gets to be extremely irritating. The most irritating part of it, is that some times I don't get the pop up window and the program I am trying to run simply crashes, or doesn't run correctly The crash is normally a hint to go and run the program specifically as the administrator. Sometimes the error is more deeply imbeded in program or system files and takes for ever to try and find out what the problem is.
I use Acronis backup software which always ran with no problems until one of the more recent Vista x64 updates, then it simply said that it ran but errors were encountered. After pouring over the log files in Acronis, I found that it couldn't run the backup because it didn't have the rights to access the backup drive.
So now things can't be scheduled and I have to run it manually.
There are times when the security features become a real burden. I hope this issue is fixed with Windows 7.

If I have a window open and move my mouse over to the left or top edge to resize the window, the cursor changes to the double arrow not on the border but inside the window a bit. On the other two sides the cursor changes outside the window a bit. If I click on the mouse, the cursor edges over to the correct position on the appropriate border.

I use 'Computer' (use to be called Windows Explorer) a lot in Windows Vista Home Premium to manage my hard drive. It's a nuisance that it starts up as a too small window and I have to stretch it each time to see more. Is there a way to force it to memorize the previous state and restore?

I had (and still do have) Vista Home Premium 32bit on my brand new PC, I dual booted this with Ubuntu (which I couldn't care less about right now), I then went to multi-boot it all with XP. And XP has taken over. So basically this is my situation, when I boot I now only get the choice of Windows XP Professional.I know that Vista uses BCD for it's booting and XP uses boot.ini. I can see that in my C drive (the one that holds Vista) there is now a boot.ini file.I have tried (in XP, since it's the only thing I can get into) going into cmd and typing "cd C:UsersXXX" to get into Vista and then typing "bcdedit", to which it tells me it can't find any such command.

Contrary to others I love Vista!Meanwhile I have 3 machines running under Vista (my desktop, my TabletPC and my wife's desktop). What bothers me most at present:
For app. 2 weeks - out if a sudden - on my desktop (and only there) I'm having an unseen phenomenon with the screen layout:
Below the normal parts of the WinMail-window (columns for the folders[left side] and the headers preview and the messages preview [right, upper and lower half]) appears a sub-window with a scrollbar which stretches across the whole WinMail window. This sub-windows always is totally empty (no contents at all).
As this description might be unclear, pls see:
http://www.hera.hs-heilbronn.de/Rt/WinMailProbs.jpg
I cab drag this sub-window bigger and smaller. But there always remain a minimal height determined by the "Up" and "Down" scroll-button (arrows).
I checked literally *everything* to get rid of this totally useless(empty) sub-window. To no avail An I already asked in the German Vista NGs. To no avail either {siiiigh}

My old computer was a Windows 98 and I had my Sims2 downloaded on that with...4(?) different expansion packs. It worked perfectly fine, it was just slow because I shared that computer with my siblings so it was very bogged down. Anyway, I downloaded my Sims2 onto my new Compaq. It works great! Only, I can't get the cheat window to show up. I know how (ctrl+shift+c), it just doesn't work when I try.
