Running Vista Operating System Didn't Automatically Shut Down
Mar 23, 2008I purchased a dell laptop last year and have had numerous issues form the start. It is running the Vista Business operating system. I realize I should have sent the thing back to the factory right away, but I didn't. I would like to reinstall the operating system and start fresh to see if the same issues occur: automatically shuting down, blue / black screen, clock consistantly loosing time, printers not working, yadda, yadda, yadda. I have all the restore disks that came with the computer. What do I need to consider before attempting to take it back to square one?

Sep 20, 2008So it has been a very long time since I built a PC from scratch, last machine I built was a CompuPro S-100 system running Concurrent CP/M ! I am building a new box primarily for doing video & photo editing using the new 64 bit versions of Photoshop and Sony Vegas. I have just about finished the physical installation, today I will run the pump for 24 hours to check for leaks and tomorrow I would like to begin setting the box up. Configuration: I have an Armor LCS cabinet w/ CPU and GPU cooling blocks, 750 watt Corsair PS, Intel DX38BT mobo, Q9550 CPU, 8 gig of Kingston 1333 DDR3 ram ( the only one actually recommended for this mobo), 1 Sony & 1 TDK DVD/CD RW drives (ATAPI), 4 Seagate 650gig SATA drives for a raid 5 storage array, 1 150gig SATA Velociraptor for the system, and 1 WD 150 gig SATA Cavier as a scratch drive, an EVGA 8800GT video card ( Vegas does not take advantage of a GPU except for some effects add-on packages ), HP 24" widescreen digital monitor, and Sony 19" analog flat screen monitor, and Full Vista Ultimate package.
Once the Hardware is all installed what NEXT? I have heard that I can only put in 1 stick of memory until the OS is installed then add the others, but even before that what are the steps for configuring the mobo once the power is added? How hard is it to set up the RAID and is the built in RAID controller any good with Vista64? Next the scratch drive currently is full of data from an XP system. The plan is to configure the RAID, move the data I want to the RAID, and then set the drive as the scratch drive, so should I install the scratch drive right away or set-up the RAID first, move the data in using the scratch drive in an external USB cabinet, and then adding the drive back into the system? This is my first Vista install what do I need to know to make it go right? Finally I have a scanner (Epson Perfection 3200 Photo) and printer (Epson 1270 Photo) that do not have drivers specificly listed to support Vista 64. What is involved in doing a dual boot machine and is it worth the hassle or should I just scan and print off of my old XP box? ( Eventually I will upgrade both pieces, but for now I have spent enough on this rig ) I also have a Contour ShuttlePro II input device that currently does not support Vista64, that one I may just have to leave on a shelf for now as it is only useful for Vegas!
Created Another Partition On My Drive For Vista X64. (two Other Partitions Running Vista X86)
Mar 14, 2008I'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.
1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.
I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.
Trouble Installing Other OS On System Running
Sep 29, 2009I am trying to install Windows Server 2003 OS on my desktop which is running Microsoft Vista Home Premium edition. But, it is failing with a blue screen and STOP message (looks like a core dump). I tried many times and it is failing with the same error message. It was able to load all the required files from the CD and lastly it was saying starting Windows and then core dump with a blue screen. I had reformatted my hard disk and tried. It was also failing. I had purchased a new internal hard drive and installed it and still it was failing.
System Running Non-stop For The Last Seven Months
Apr 22, 2010My Dell laptop has been running non-stop for the last seven months. I use it as a desktop, connected to a large monitor. I have a cooling plate. The hard drives shut down after fifteen minutes. My computer buddy says that, since there are no moving parts, then it should be no problem leaving it running. Is this true or false?

Jan 5, 2009So I have my computer and my X-Box in the same room, and every time I hold down the controller's Guide button my X-box 360 starts running and if I turn off my X-box 360 my controller of course powers down as well, so I have to unplug my X-Box 360 in order to get my controller to connect to my computer when I hold down my guide button, but of course this seems silly, can anyone offer some advise so I don't have to unplug my system to use my controller with Windows?

Oct 26, 2008My new system was running at idle temps of 46c and under load (2 games and ventrillo running) it was sitting at around 61c @3.1Ghz. Now tempted to go a bit further to see how it will perform. I wanted to get the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreeme but found it difficult to locate from local supplies but with more reading i found that a lot of people also had good reviews with the Zalman 9700 LED HSF setup so i was able to get that and man what a difference it made. I now run my system @3.5Ghz easy with idle temps at 38c and under load at 50c thats a damn vantastic difference it has made. extra rep points from me but i am not sure how to do that

I have tried running System File Checker, while confirmed that some files were corrupted, but it couldn't fix them. Eventually I worked out how to change the permissions on those files so that I can manually replace them, but can't find a fresh file to replace them with, either on the Vista DVD or on the Net.

I have read that the 32 bit version (which I'm running) can only see about 3GB although it reports 4GB. Is there any reason why I should not consider moving to the 64 bit version? Mar 29, 2008i've been working on this for awhile now and i'm at a dead end. Here is my issue, my machine is running vista x64 ultimate and for the last few weeks, I have not been able to get my 360 to connect to my pc. When i actually turn the 360 on, I get a notification in the taskbar and when i go through the steps to set up my extender, it always fails at connecting to extender. At the same time, the 360 just sits at the contacting screen with the white dots and eventually fails. I'm only using the windows firewall, which i've disabled and still have had no luck. I've also connected the 360 directly to my pc to no avail with 3 different ethernet cables and i'm pretty sure its not the network or my 360 itself because my xp media center works just fine. At this point, I've narrowed it down to my vista machine, but i'm at a loss.

Aug 22, 2009ive just reinstalled vista 64bit home premium i downloaded it from a torrent and then validated with my key im coming from 64bit windows 7 where i had 6 gbs of ram all showing up and in use but since ive reinstalled vista half of my RAM is missing i have it running dual channel one set with 4 gbs and the other set 2 gbs the 4 gbs is corsair 800 mhz and the 2 is stock memory whats also 800mhz i was gonna ditch the 2 when i bought the corsair ram recently but decided to keep both sets because my WEI score was 6.4 with just the corsair ram 4gbs but went uptoo 7.2 when i added the other stock ram and both sets were running flawlessly together ive tried both sets on there own and both are working in either slot on motherboard when i just used the 2 gbs it showed up something like 1980 ram in or something and when i just used the 4 set it was showing the same amount as the picture above i was thinking ive got some fake 64bit vista but 64bit programs work.

The one it *can* print to is hardwired to the network, the one in *cannot* isn't. But, that's not the problem. The notebook "sees" the printer share just fine. Just trying to connect or run the setup wizard ultimately leads to an "access denied" error. 1) I tried googling the answer and it wasn't "add a local printer" (even though it's not) 2) I tried installing the printer driver both before and after adding the printer (didn't work) I mean it's *right* there, the machine sees it. Why can't it connect to it? Do I need to change something in the machine's permission settings? It's an effing printer. Who cares if the whole world sees it.

C: x86 (the original install) (active/primary)
K: x64 (installed later to test it as I wanted more than 3GB ram) (primary)
I then decided to get rid of the C:x86 version and just use the K:x64 one so whilst in K: and using partition software I deleted the C: and merged the K; into the free space. Seemed like a good idea at the time! Well now it won't boot at all. I'm getting the message "NTLDR is missing" at startup. So, using the Vista install disc, I got into DOS or CMD or whatever they call it nowadays and I can see that K: is now called C: My original x86 C: file structure is gone but my old K: X64 file structure is now under C:

Both 98 machines see the Vista machine but when I try to access the Vista machine from these machines the following happens: On 98 the icon shows the Vista machine name, and when I click on this icon (expecting to get the "public" folder) I am asked for a network password to access the Vista machine - (of course) I have no such password.On 98SE the icon shows the "public" folder, and when I click on this icon the 98SE machine locks up completely. ++ reveals that the Vista machine "is not responding", and I have to terminate the process to continue operations on the 98SE.Is there any solution to these problems or must I simply give up all attempts to access the public area on the Vista machine from my Pre-XP
