Can't Update Vista: Failures Related To Security
Apr 6, 2008A Dell Inspiron 1521 running Vista. There are several problems that all seem related but the most obvious one is that I can't update Vista. It is set up to update automatically. However, the "New Updates are Available" Icon appears on the task bar. If I click on it a window comes up and immediately disappears. If I hunt through the help menus until I find a link that says "Click to open Windows Update" the same thing happens: a window opens and immediately shuts. Similarly if I go to the control panel and click Windows Update nothing happens.
If I right click on it and choose Explore a window comes up but it is empty. The Default Programs icon is similarly unresponsive. If I click on the Windows Defender Icon and click on that and say to update, it returns error 0x8007045a. In addition to that, the backup/recovery thing returns errors. And when I try to run Ad-Aware it hangs. All of these failures are related to security
Theme Vista How Can To Saved
May 16, 2009I'm going to do a science fair project and I thought I would to something to do with computers.I was thinking of making a theme for vista that people who aren't tech savy ,so they can easily tell what is what.Does anyone know how to go about this? I would like it as a msstyles theme rather than Window Blinds. Or else does anyone have any annoying problems with there computer that I could make a solution for?

Jun 18, 2008OK, my Dell Dimension E521 running Vista Business SP1 does NOT like Spore Creature Creator. (single core, 1 gig ram, integrated HD audio chip (SigmaTel), GeForce 7300 LE PCIe card) I installed the Trail version yesterday and no problems. I used the EA Downloader to download the full version and quickly found out that you had to uninstall the trial to get the full version to install correctly.
After installing the full version, I started the game and the game crashes
shortly after the EA Logo appears on screen.I went through my registry and striped out all the Spore entries and reinstalled, but I am getting the same crash on start-up.
Activation Or Related?
Jan 9, 2008No this is nothing to do with Piracy and whatnot, my Vista is perfectly legal (and I have the Credit card bill to prove this.). I am on my "1st build" and am currently using the "30 day trial" - the reason for this was that I wanted to be sure that everything ran smoothly before I activated the software, mainly because I was unsure about whether or not x64 would play nice (and I may have had to install x32 instead) It does, and I'm chuffed.
My main Q is, should I activate... and say in 6 months time, I have to do a fresh build , I assume that I will be able to without incident (worst case scenario I have to phone MS, but then I did that with XP and had no problems.) Secondly, should I wish to change Hardware i.e. Graphics card / adding another hard drive (which are about the only two upgrades I'd do to this monster of a machine) after activation, I assume thats allowed ?
Hanging Related To Updates
Sep 17, 2009Working on a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617, using Windows Vista Home Premium. It started out with hangtime -- a lot of hangtime. With anything that put a little stress on the system: music, games, movies were all useless to me now. Even web browsing was a chore, with a 15-second hangtime for each web page opened -- sometimes twice (much worse on the graphics-heavy sites). The system was also extremely slow retrieving files on the hard disk. I didn't know what to do for several months until I narrowed the cause down to the Windows Update Error 80070426. Based on advice to other people with similar problems that I found here and other places, I took the following steps: I made sure my copy of Vista was re-authenticated, then I tried installing the updates again. No luck.
The next option was to restore my machine to the factory settings. This could be accomplished rather easily with the system restore disk that came with the computer. Except that during my last move, the wife thought the computer box would make nice storage for drinking glasses, and promptly emptied the contents of the box. That stuff has not been seen or heard from since. Whenever I describe my computer woes to somebody and they ask why I don't just restore it with the backup disk, I just give the wife a hard stare and shake my head a little, saying nothing.

Nov 9, 2009I'm hoping this isn't a repeat of an existing thread - I couldn't find any directly-related info. I have an HP Pavillion running Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I thought I had a virus and I ordered the recovery disks from HP. The laptop was working somewhat but sometimes would only run in Safe Mode. The problem seemed to be a failing hard drive. I replaced the hard drive yesterday. The system recognized the drive and the quick test and comprehensive test both passed.
I reinstalled from the recovery CD and it seemed to go through all the steps. At the final self reboot, the screen eventually goes black (lit, but black) with the mouse cursor. I then get a message: Windows could not complete the installation. to install windows on this computer, restart the installation. HP support says it could be the motherboard. Are there any other things I could try before taking in for service? Is there any other way to do a truly 'clean' install?
Unknown Device (Related To ACPI)
Nov 24, 2008I have windows vista x64 installed. My system is an AMD 64 X2 6000+, ASUS M2A - VM motherboard. I cannot figure out what device is unknown. Can someone give me any ideas what it could be? I've used Driver Detective and it says all of my drivers are up-to-date.

Partial Aero Glass Reserved For OS Related Windows
Sep 11, 2008For some reason, I have the Aero glass theme enabled on my 64-bit Vista machine, but the theme is only used for a few windows. It seems to be mostly reserved for OS related windows, as opposed to application windows. For instance, even IE7 doesn't show transparency. I find it strange that the Aero glass frame appears to only work partially for me. I would have expected that it would fully work, or not work at all. I'm using Intel's Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 3100, which came with my system.

Sep 26, 2009i thought to get the aero theme to my windows vista. So i search in google how to get windows aero. I found a way to have by installing a free program called VistaGlazz 1.3 (Available in Cnet.com). So I downloaded the program, follow the instructions and installed
windows aero. First it was good but then i thought how to make it look more transparent. So i tried to download a custom theme of vista aero by someone else. I dont know how i screw it but the thing is that i put the theme file in C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes. I saw the old file of vistaglazz so i tried to delete it. But when i deleted it my computer got corrupted and the all the thing got in black. saw that my desktop was all in black. I coudnt even see the letters. So luckly i change my windows into the classic version. When i go to C:WINDOWSResourcesThemes i saw that my Windows Vista theme file had dissapear. Even in customization and apperreances there was no windows vista. So now iam using a aero without windows vista original theme file. I dont know how happened but I think that in a way my windows vista theme file got mixxed with vistaglazz aero file. So it got deleted.
Standard Theme Missing
Feb 7, 2009I installed Vista SP1 Ultimate. By default the aero theme is activated. I would like to switch to the Vista standard theme, but it seems this theme is not present. In control panel / Appearance and Personalization / Personalization / Theme, there are only two themes listed: Windows vista (aero) and Windows Classic. Is there a way to install the Vista standard theme? It should be present in Vista Ultimate.

Dec 6, 2008So a while ago, I installed a theme. It was some Alienware theme, some friend had recommended it. After a few days, I got bored of it and reverted my theme back to the default Windows Vista thingie. It was later I discovered it hadn't fully gone back to normal. Some folders icons were displayed as the Alienware ones. Not all, but only some. And they were all in the same area, my Documents folder, strangely. Anyways, I left it at that and since then it has really been bothering me and I've decided to get rid of it. One thing I did was go to the folder properties, go to that customize section, and set the icon to default. This worked for some folders, to my joy but it didn't work on some.
Another thing I discovered is the folders are only displayed like that on my particular user account, not on another one. I have tried deleting the icon cache or something like that, and I've used some program called Winbubble or something but nothing's been working. Any possible fixes or theories or whatever are welcome. A system restore isn't possible, as this, as mentioned, was a while ago.

Jan 4, 2009A long time ago I installed a Mac theme because I grew so weary of the Vista theme. But, when I uninstalled it, it never seemed to do so correctly (i.e., logon screen still has a mac background). I didn't care so much because it was only the logonscreen. BUT. Recently I was surfing the internet and found out (YEAH I hear everything first!! xD) that Vista Home Premium slows down your computer. So, I switched to Vista Basic. But I grew tired of that too and wanted to switch back. BUT THERE IS NO AERO THEME! THERE ARE ONLY 3 VISTA BASICS! 2 of them are mac themes and then there is the original Vista Basic theme.
I found the Aero theme in the /windows on the HDD and when I click it, the Vista Basic theme chooser doesn't show up, but Windows Vista Premium. This is all very strange. OH, I almost forgot. The files that are in the themes folder are: MAC OS X 10.5, VistaOSX Theme, Windows Classis and Aero. Also there are folders named: Aero, leo4, VistaOSX9. I tried moving the files and folders that were in VistaOSX folder to the desktop and then copying the ones from Aero to there, but then the VIstaOSX theme disappeared (or one of the Basics and VIstaOSX turned into the new basic cuz I put the files in there).
Classic Theme - Works Completely?

Recently, I've been thinking about switching to Vista 64 someday, but I've got a question about the classic theme:
I know that the theme is available, but does it give me complete access to all the functions available? I think I heard somewhere that some things won't work properly because Vista's GUI just differs very much from the older ones, and so there are functions that are not accessible anymore.
Is that true? Can the use of the classic theme really narrow my set of functionalities?

2) How can we get some color difference between the active and the inactive title bar or application window border in Windows 7, while keeping the rounded corners on application windows?
When you pick a Windows 7 Aero theme such as the one called "Windows 7", you are allowed to turn off transparency (Yay!), and you are allowed to pick a "Window Color". You can select from several different pale, washed-out color schemes here. But, even if you use the Color Mixer, you can't get much difference in color between the active title bar and the inactive title bar...........
Change The Theme On Both Users Desktops..
Jun 28, 2008I am having trouble applying themes in Vista. I have two user accounts set up. I am using third party software to do it (Desktop Architect). I can use Desktop Architect just fine to apply the theme on the main user's desktop. However, when I try to use Desktop Architect to apply the theme on the other user's desktop, every thing in the theme shows up fine (icons) but the desktop background picture doesn't show up. It's just black. I found out that I can fix this by right clicking on the desktop, selecting Personalize, then Themes and then select My Current Theme and clicking on apply. After that, the picture shows up just fine. However, I want to use Desktop Architect alone to change the theme on both users desktops. I don't know why it works fine for one but not the other.
