View 9 RepliesI was on my pc the other day and I was starting up COD2 and just like that, windows went down and I got this blue screen saying windows had been shut down to prevent damage or something. After that the pc rebooted and everything was fine, except for some flickering of the screen sometimes which I knew wasn't good. Yesterday I booted my pc and the same thing happened when I started COD2. Today my pc didn't even boot anymore, right after the IDE screen (black and white) the blue screen popped up showing the same message and the pc shut down. Only safe mode will work. Can this have anything to do with CPU instability or overheating?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI programs, mainly my games, my full screen games, keep minimizing at random. Espically the sims 2. It hasn't ever happened before. I would start the game then the title front page would come up then it would disappear but my machine would still run as if it were there. It would never come up. My online mmorpg will continously minimize. I will click on them but they only maximize for a few seconds before minimizing again. I've tried everything i know: Running full scans on my computer with nothing showing up, getting rid of mulitiple virus protections. Ending some start up programs. Udating various thing. It's not a virus and it's not malware. I just don't know what it is anymore. I've tried googling the problem and seeing if i could find an answer that would help, it didn't. I have tried a tool made by microsoft to see if it could find the problem, it found nothing at all wrong with it. I don't know what else to do. It's never done it before. I heard that an eariler version of AVG (my virus protection) could cause it, but i uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo last night my bat-out-of-hell cat jumped on my table and knocked over a glass of red wine. Most of the wine went under my laptop but some amount splashed onto the keyboard and screen. At first, my computer showed no signs of a problem and I have never spilled on a computer ever so I didnt know what to do. About an hour later my screen started flickering on and off (from black to the screen image) it started with just a flicker or two in a couple of minutes to every other second or more. I turned the computer off and took a blow dryer to it for under an hour and then let it dry overnight. In the morning, I turned the computer on and it booted without issue except that the screen resolution changed (as it often does after booting with the screen closed or open) and then the flickering started again. I turned it off and blow dried it again for some time and I will leave it off for at least a week but any ideas/suggestions for what I should do next. Does it seem like something is already fried and I need to contact the manufacturer for a fix? Is there anything else I should do?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that my monitor has wavey type lines moving up and down (almost like interference)...I seem to get it most when the screen is dark or when loading up a game...for example I loaded up Crysis, Grid, R6V2 and all on the intro screens looked like the screen picture was split in half and you could see the join line..I have tried playing around with the res and refresh rates but not having much luck..got a 22" montior and a 8800GTX graphics card - all drivers are up to date.
View 7 Replies View Relatedso on almost EVERY game I play, when I start it up, black screen, (Which isnt that much of a problem, i mean starting a game can take a long time.) and I enjoy it. I need to do something, check something, or do anything non game wise, I have to minimize. Well, here is where I get frustrated. I alt+tab, alt+delete, anything, even open up task manager, I get either a black screen, or a frozen screen (depending on the game) for about 30 seconds. Nothing I can do. After it is done pissing me off, my computer goes to desktop, or whatever, and then its fine. I go back to the game? Another freeze. I am running a Vista Home Premium x64 dell computer, with intel quad core, and nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphics card. (Im not exactly sure on how to fill out specs, so feel free to ask for anything you might need to know)

I am building a new system and have a new copy of Vista Home Premium 32bit.
I got it all put together and tried to load Vista. It got to the Windows is loading files screen and then screen in getting black video. Keyboad and mouse stopped working at times. So I updated the board BIO's per intel through iso image and same thing. So I tried installing XP and got to the F8 screen to accept lic. and it just reboots everytime.
Any ideas why Vista would stop? Added the info about the XP install so it may help.

I know this is a Vista news group but I haven't been able to find a Windows 7 group so maybe one of you guys can answer my question. I have the power settings to never put computer or screen to sleep and there is no screen saver setup. When I leave my computer alone for awhile the screen goes black. This never happened with Vista when setup this way why is Windows 7 doing this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSomething very odd happened today. I was as usual loading a large file ( 5.4gb ) in to Photoshop and as PS was doing it's business I noticed everything jumped over to my second monitor and the main monitor went blank. Moments later the image on the second monitor turned into a garbled fragmented mess before going into power save mode from which I couldn't get out of. Very strange.....Forced a warm boot. As the system had just been turned on so I can sort of rule out a heat issue - possibly & ram test OK. My workstation is mainly off line but two days ago I had to ftp something and I do remember vista installing an automatic update for windows update (without my permission) which I was very annoyed about, shame on you MS.....and after rebooting I saw a few reg. modifications come up on screen. Could this be the cause of this odd behavior. It's been fine since I had the warm boot - any ideas as to what's going on.

A few days ago, the computer would go to a blue screen saying it's dumping physical memory and then automatically reboots. Thinking my harddisk might be collapsing on me (I have a seagate barracuda 7200.11 500Gb HD with the SD15 firmware, the infamous crash friendly HD), I flash the HD with the SD1A firmware from seagate, then it was fine. 2days later, Catalyst started to cause problems by not responding, so I formated the drive and reinstalled vista ultimate, along with Catalyst, drivers from Mobo manufacturer ASUS, plus a couple of other softwares. That was yesterday, and now I'm getting the same blue screen back, or the computer just freezes.
I have recently bought a new PC running Windows Vista Home Premium. I have loaded the above programs for my son and when they a running the screen is not centred and the is a black bar to the right of the screen approx 3 cm wide. I have tried to run the games in compatibility mode and as adminstrator as recommended with other games but with no success.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having a very wierd issue with vista's screen saver. So basically when I leave the comp idle it goes into screen saver then turns off the monitor after 15 mins. Sometimes, more often than not, I come back and move the mouse and hit a few keys on the keyboard and nothing. The monitor wont come out of standby I try turning it off and back on, and nothing. I have the latest drivers for everything in my system and I checked the power management settings and they both are able to wake the computer up. I have a G15 keyboard and I keep the leds on and when this happens the leds are off and the lazer for the mouse is off too.

My one guess is its something to do with the display driver maybe because that has been stuffing up a bit of late, in the way of the screen going black for a couple of seconds then recovering.
Why do I get black picture after I have pressed PrtSc button? Of course it shouldn't be black and it happens only when the screen is on full screen mode (for an example videos, games etc.). It also doesn't matters if I am using just PrtSc or Alt + PrtSc - the result is the same. It looks like this ---> http://img525.imageshack.us/i/blackba.jpg/ (and, no, I didn't painted it black).

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've had pretty good luck with vista so far but every so often it will blue screen on me and I cant figure out why. The scenario is
1. System startup from power off condition
2. System boots to login screen
3. Blue screen referencing processor timing or something

I have not overclocked or anything everything is vanilla. I would also note that I run hardware diagnostics utilities and it seems fine. Also, I never get the message about abnormal system termination like ususal. How can I get a clue as to what is going on here. So far it seems like the error is bogus, I can log in and the machine will run for days with no problem.

Working beautifully for many months, and then a few
weeks ago this began happening:
Perhaps 2-3 times a week, and with no consistency of circumstances, a blue screen will appear. It might happen while working or when returning from hibernate. There's a countdown as memory is stored, and then a freeze. The only way to recover is to do a hard OFF (5 seconds on the power switch) and restart. When it first happened, I had not installed or changed anything, so I was comfortable doing a restore. It happened again.
It's confusing because the stated cause is inconsistent. I've checked to ensure that all drivers are updated and nothing that's contraVistarian is installed. What analytical steps can I undertake to discover what's causing this, and then to help me make the necessary changes?
My friend at work forgot his password and cannot log onto his computer. He is running Windows vista home premium on a Compaq laptop. We tried to go into the safe mode but the only screen we get is his password sign on screen. Even during boot we pressed f8 key but the password screen came up. He is hoping someone has an idea or answer so he can avoid taking it into get looked at and paying money.

View 9 Replies View RelatedWMC plays recorded tv OK, but the screen icons and controls won't dissappear during playback. Even though the mouse is not moving, the little circle next to the cursor pop's up every 5 seconds, keeping the controls from fading. It's only during video playback, not music.

Vista Home Premium 32, SP1, with an ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics card and an ATI TV Wonder tuner.
When I boot my Vista laptop, the first screen that appears is a blueish screen with a single square box in the middle that contains an orange flower. Underneath that orange box is my user name. I have to click that orange box to get the 2nd screen that contains the password text box.

For a single user, the first screen is not necessary and just requires an extra mouse click. I want to bypass that screen and have the password entry screen be the first screen to appear. Is there any trick to do that? I do want to retain the password screen in case someone steals my laptop.
I'm having trouble getting to the logon screen today after I shut it down yesterday last night. My friend's son was using my laptop to write up a research report for class and decided to go -exploring- in the system32 folder. He said all he did was move an authui file? I tried using my vista recovery disks, but I can't seem to locate them with all cluttered junk laying around the room(still cleaning).
