Remote Control Not Working
Apr 24, 2008
My problem is that I have recently become disabled and sitting at my PC in my office is not doing my back any good at all: I've been told to avoid using my office type chair. I'm thinking of getting a laptop which I could use in the room next door (my lounge)- the laptop could 'talk' to the rest of my setup via my wireless router. However, I'm not keen on using the laptop for anything other than remotely controlling my PC - if, indeed, that's possible: hopefully, the laptop could show my Pc's desktop and I could operate the laptop just as though I were sitting at my PC.

I dont want him to be able to see the program starting up all the time because I may never need to use it and he doesnt want me to install it. However I know in a few weeks time he will be on the phone asking me to deploy Logmein IT Reach to him and I really cant be bothered. I want to set it up now so I can control it whenever I need to. I'm wondering if anyone as seen a comprehensive list of the various media center applications and the tuners they support? I'm doing this mainly because my tuner isn't supported on MS's Media Center. Microsoft Media Center: no combination cards supported (like mine - the Asus 9520, aka Nvidia Geforce 5200, which has the tuner built into the video card)
Intervideo Home Theater 2: mine works great, but they don't seem to support digial tv - so my satellite recvr won't be able to be controled by the Intervideo remote control that i got with the card...etc... (I can only choose cable or antenna as the source - not satellite or stb) Otherwise, i use it fine. Support sucks, and it has been bought by Corel recently. Meebia - bought by Yahoo, now Yahoo! Go - TV.. seems they have a short list, haven't tried mine. Moxi TV for PC - not out yet, looks promising. Cyberlink PowerCinema - haven't tried it yet. Beyond TV - tried it in the past, didn't work. may try it again now that i have the latest drivers for all my stuff.

I have this remote control,I just re-installed VIsta Ultimate, and now this remote control is not working anymore.. it was working fine before I did the re-install..it comes w/no driver, so short of disconnecting and connecting the transmitter again to a USB port not sure what more I can do.. it used to work fine not just with Windows Media Center but also with Rhapsody and other stuff, now it does not work at all... I just put new batteries in it... when I press a button on the remote the green light on the remote goes on and the red light on the transmitter also goes on.. so it's definitely not a battery problem..
(I know there's another, more specialized ng for this question in microsoft.public.windows.vista hierarchy, but I'm posting thru google now and can't find that group (posting thru google for now b/c also have not been able to retrieve all prefs/info (i.e., passwords) for my news client (Thunderbird).

I'm running Vista Home Premium 64 bit on a new HP pavilion laptop. I'm trying to log into my work system remotely. The error I'm getting is "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Remote desktop cannot find the remote computer. Type the computer name or IP address again, and then try connecting" I've tried the help desk at work, they say they know there has been issues with people loggin in with Vista, but its been resolved. But they have not actually been able to help me log in. They are running Windows NT.

When I try to open Mail and Fax in Control Panel I get this message: "You need more memory or system resources. Close some windows and try again." I have closed all programs in the tray and tried again which gets the same message. I have restarted Windows Vista Home Premium and tried again which gets the same message. I have looked at Task Manager and do not see any unusual program useage going on. As mentioned, my OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. What solution do I need to apply?

Everytime I try to open up the control pane, Vista tells me that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then restarts it.
I'm using Business Ultimate 64bit. I've run sfc /scannow several times.
I have a custom built PC,
Giga-Byte EP35-DS4 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad at 2.4Ghz, Kentsfield model
2GB Ram, Crucial Ballistix DDR2
eVGA GeForce 8800 GT
Seagate 500GB HD
Samsung DVD Burner
Encore Wireless card
That's about it. Default BIOS setup.I tried running 'msconfig' and disabling all Non-Microsoft Services and all Startup items.
Interestingly enough, when I boot into Safe Mode I can access the Control Panel just fine. I don't know what that means.. I'm new to this, I'm a Mac user by default.

When I go to Control panel of mine most of my setting features are not shown amongst whom the important one is the Ease of Access. I don't know if it is a problem which came by updating the Vista or what? I was thinking if SP1 for Vista could help me so please let me know if there is a way to fix the problem of having a compact Vista. The Windows games also don't work and many many other thinks (in Control panel) are also to be mentioned.

I have a dual boot system with Win XP on one partition and Vista 64 Ultimate on the second partition. Sometime recently, perhaps at the latest Windows Update on Vista, my nVidia Control Panel stopped working in Vista 64. I am using nVidia driver 185.85, the latest non-beta version available. I am using nVidia system tools 6.05, the latest set available. I have cleaned out my drivers with Driver Sweeper, and reloaded them with no change. I have loaded the drivers with all virus software shut down, with all unnecessary apps shut down. When I try to start up the nVidia control panel, whether in the Windows Control Panel or other shortcut, Vista tells me that "nVidia Control Panel has stopped working". I am getting the impression that the nVidia drivers are not running, since when I add them they are not defaulting to max resolution like they normally do. The system seems to be running on some default video driver instead. CPU, GPU, MCP temperatures are nominal, no indications of problems there.......

I am stumped as to an issue I am having using remote desktop. I have several machines in the office that have been using RD for a while without issue. All are XP SP 3 machines. I have a new Vista Ultimate machine that I am trying to remote to with an XP machine. I have set up RD on the Vista Machine, Firewall is checked, forwarded to the correct port, set the port rule on the router...all the typical issues I am aware of. Everytime I try to connect I get "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem continues, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator." I can ping the Vista machine and I can remote from the vista machine to any RD enabled machine.

I'm puzzled about something that should be really simple. I'm trying to provide Remote Assistance to someone who has Windows XP, and my PC is running Vista x64, but after making a connection I get a message saying that the other person is away from the computer and did not respond. This message is wrong, because the prompt never pops up on the other end. When I try connecting from the same network using my laptop which is running Windows XP, I am able to successfully connect and control their desktop.
While searching the web I read conflicting things. On the one hand some people say to tweak the Vista auto-tuning setting. That doesn't do anything to fix it. On the other hand, another message says that remote assistance from Vista to XP is not possible. Well if it was not possible then why doesn't Microsoft pop up an error message that says it's attempting to connect to an incompatible operating system? Why instead is there an error message saying that the person didn't respond? Seems like a bug to me..........

"You cannot use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to remote computers running Windows XP." However, I noticed that Vista has Remote Assistance as well as Remote Desktop. So, mainly I want to know how to set up Remote Assistance on his PC (with XP) and Remote Assistance on my PC (with Vista). So, what are the step-by-step instructions for setting up Remote Assistance on his PC and on my PC?

Been experiencing a weird problem the last couple weeks after 6+months of easy remote access to my Vista client via my Windows Home Server. It started when I was using a remote connection on 6/19 and an update came through as I was actively using it. The connection "broke" and I went to log back in. Problem is that I no longer see my usual Vista log-in screen! I can properly log in to the MSS server, access Photo WebShare, see photos in WHIIST, see a (very preliminary) ASP.NET web page, log in to the server, access shared files and "see" my list of clients. BUT, when I try to access the Vista client (the only one that can be remotely accessed) I do not see my normal log-in screen when I am remote. If I go in locally using the IP address then all is normal.
Normally I would see a screen giving me two userids to choose from: John1 & John2. (Guest is disabled, John1 has Administrative privileges, John2 does not.) This is what I see on a local/IP connection but if I go in remotely (or through a loop-back) with the name then I see "Administrator" and "Other". When I go to the other selection I am allowed to enter name and ID but nothing works. Using John1 I get "invalid password" errors. Using John2 I get messages telling me it is not in the correct group for remote access. I created a John3 ID (administrative) to see if that would work, but it doesn't. Initially I thought it was something in the Vista user setups but that makes no sense as I can get in locally with IP addressing. I do not see anything obvious blocked in my Firewall (Windows Live OneCare) of in my router (Linksys WRT-54G v1.1) but those are my current areas of focus. It is almost like I am trying to log into a different client than my own. And it is definitely frustrating. Anyone know what's going on here?

A friend needs me to help troubleshoot an application on his Windows Vista machine. I have an XP machine, and both of happen to use routers at home (he lives in a different city), and neither of us have unique IP addresses, just local IP addresses and the address of our routers. Connecting to each others machines is therefore a bit tricky.

I am trying to connect to my Vista Ultimate 32 machine from an XP Professional machine. I can't get a connection or even an attempt at a connection. Here is what I've tried so far.
- I turned off the Windows firewall.
- I am connecting from another computer inside my network.
- I have tried both the (less secure) and (more secure) options in the Remote desktop area.
- I have tried to telnet to my machine to port 3389 and it fails to connect.
- I can ping the machine, see shared directories and connect to remote management.
- I have turned on all services having to do with remote access and terminal services.
So just clarify, it isn't a router issue, I am just trying to connect from one machine to another inside my network. Once I get that working, I will setup the router. I have been searching around for a while trying to find the answer to this problem. I have seen a hundred posts related to this topic but they all seem to end to at "try to telnet to port 3389" with no further responses

I'll preface this with the fact I am only so knowledgeable about this IP stuff. I am all my computer challenged family has to rely on so I want to be able to see what happening on about three other computers in three different locations. I am a serious cheapskate so I tried some Shareware called "Anyplace control" worked great through the online account but slow. There is apparently a direct connection option but I need a static ip to make that happen. So keeping it as simplistic as possible for me how do I get my mother Vista laptop, my two daughters Win 7 laptops able to be remote tweaked from either my Vista laptop or XP desktop. I am not locked into that software it was just easiest at the time.

I have a new Lenovo with Vista for business OS (that replaces my old thinkpad on XP). At my office, I am able to use remote desktop connection to remotely operate my work pc (a VISTA business OS) - by attaching to the work network by wire. However, at home I use the VPN to connect to the work network. THe VPN connects just fine but the RDC comes up with the error message "This computer can't connect to the remote PC." At home I have a 3 PC wired network with the notebook being one of the connections. THe other PCs are XP pro's and can connect via the VPN and RDC to my work PC with no problems.
I've read the posts and it seems there isn't a clear answer to this problem. Also, if there is a fix that affects my home network, then what happens when I'm traveling and use the broadband connection in a hotel? If the issue is opening ports, I'll need some help as my experience with my router (netgear) is basic to moderate. I need to resolve this as I leave town in a week for business and I need to connect

Running Vista 32 Bit Home Prem on Desktop and Laptop. My Home Network has Wireless Router...Desktop is hard wired to Router, Laptop is wireless. Recently configured Network to let me share Printer connected to Desktop via USB connection. The Desktop is set to sleep after 60 mins. What I didn't realize is when Desktop goes to Sleep the Network doesn't see it, and, trying to print from the Laptop to the shared printer will not work. Is there away given the configuration of my Home Network that I can Wake the Desktop from my Laptop when I want to Print from the Laptop when the Desktop has gone to Sleep? I realize I could just not let the Desktop to go into Sleep....but that defeats the Power saving feature which is important to me.

Please try connecting to the remote computer again. The server is up that I'm telneting too (we have XP machines that reach it fine) and I can telnet to it from the Vista machine.
