Intermittent System Slowdown

Jul 3, 2008

I have an intermittent slowing issue. Sometimes on system startup, the computer will be running very slowly, as though there is a huge drain on system resources- taking 10 seconds plus to open IE, for example- but when I open the task manager and take a look, I'm never using more than 10% CPU (its usually more like 4%) and physical memory is usually around 30-50% used.

This problem can persist through a reboot (where the system will appear to hang on the "Shutting down..." screen for up to 10 minutes), but through a restart or two I can usually get it to go away.

Slowdown With UAC

Jun 19, 2008

We have a .NET/C application that is required to start automatically as soon as an user logs on to their PC. It is well known that Vista blocks applications that requires admin privileges (ours does and it specifies that via the manifest) to automatically start on logon. Our problem is looking far more serious. We launch our admin- demanding app via a batch file and put _that_ batch file on startup. This works in that the app now starts fine at startup but it really really really really slows down the application to a crawl. However if I back out of the admin privilege and publish the app with a manifest with just asInvoker, everything is just fine and dandy. The app launches fine on startup and functions equally well. Why in the God's name would running an admin privilege seeking application at startup cause so much slowdown?

Sudden Upload Speed Slowdown

May 8, 2008

A few days ago out of the blue my upload speed went down to practically zero. I know it's my computer because the other computers on the network can still upload fine. When I run a speed test the download comes back fine (~1275kbps on a 1536kbps connection) but the upload either doesn't finish or comes back at something like 10kbps. My connection for upload is 800kbps. I use qwest dsl.

Intermittent Connection

Aug 28, 2009

My Network and sharing Center is an action movie. I have two days with that windows maximixed, I turn on the computer and everything is great for no more than 2 minutes, then the action begin, the red X appears between the Network and Internet Icons, I lose conectivity from all, it came back after 15 secs average, then after one minute 6 tops is down again. Sometimes appears a warning triangle sign between my pc and the network icon then I get "limited conectivity" and it fixes by itself after 15 to 20 secs. Is like that all day.

Internet Connectivity Is Intermittent

Jul 29, 2009

I am facing a strange problem with my HP Dv6705 laptop running on Vista Professional. I have a Wi-fi router configured for internet access. Now, the internet connectivity is intermittent i.e. I am connected to the internet for about 5 seconds before it gets disconnected. I get the connectivity again after a few seconds before it gets disconnected.

Now, I started using the uTorrent application after which I got prolonged connectivity. From the past few days, whenever I need uninterrupted internet I need to turn on the uTorrent application. It is quite strange that I am the only one who needs to do this while the others in my house (who have similar laptops) do not face any problem. Is there any way to detect what exactly is happening and how I can resolve this uTorrent workaround?

Intermittent Blue Screen: BCP1 0000009A

Mar 25, 2007

Since I have installed Vista Home Premium I have had an intermittent "Blue Screen" problem with the following Stop Message:

BCCode: 4e
BCP1 0000009A
BCP2 0007DF69
BCP3 0000006
BCP4 00000002

Files that help describe the problem:
F:WindowsMinidumpMini020407-01.dmp
F:UsersRogerAppDataLocalTempWER-84968-0.sysdata.xml
F:UsersRogerAppDataLocalTempWER918C.tmp.version.txt

BCP2 has different code every time this happens but other codes remain the same. To get out of the situation I select "Last Known Good Configuration" at Start Up and then I can go for an extended period before the problem re-occurs. In original received a message saying there was a problem with the graphics driver but this driver came with Vista.( Nvidia FX5200) also at one stage Microsoft told me that there were some issues regarding the driver but nothing has come of it.

Microsoft's online support here in Australia is very poor at the moment, taking a week or more to respond and then they keep on repeating themselves now they have admitted that due to the release of Vista they are receiving alot of emails and suggested I phone them instead but I can never get through. So there we are. Does anyone have any idea what these codes mean and what the files mean? Everything works fine in "Safe Mode" so there must be a an issue with hardware/ software?

1. Update chipset drivers
2. Tried new NIC
3. Upgrade/downgrade firmware on Router
4. Removed Router
5. Removed software firewalls and AV
6. Complete reinstall of Vista with slipstreamed SP1

Intermittent Connectivity: Connects On Reboot Then Disconnect

Feb 24, 2009

I have a new ASUS Laptop with Vista Home SP1 (with a sweet 512M dedicated video card) connecting wirelessly via a Linksys WRT54G router. The firmware on the router is current and Linksys assures me that there are no known issues with Vista and internet connectivity. I have a MacBookPro that connects w/o issue (wireless) and three XP machines that connect just fine (wireless and direct connect) so I know my network is solid. The laptop always connects on reboot, but conks out without warning after 45 minutes or up to three hours. Even when it seems like the laptop is offline, I can often ping a website through the command prompt. The "diagnose and repair" option just tells me eveything is fine. Windows Firewall has default settings. Already disabled IPv6.

Potential Logitech G7 Intermittent Mouse Freeze Solution

Oct 9, 2008

For all of you G7 owners who continue to struggle with random freezing:

As others have so eloquently noted there is a strong consenus that this is a hardware issue potentially related to multiple factors including radio interferance, battery malfunction / contact issues, usb power, etc.

Here is a list of things to try, any of which may (or may not) solve the problem:

1) unplug the usb transmitter from the adapter and plug it back in. This did the trick for me about 50% of the time. Sometime toggling the DPI buttons (the + and - buttons on the mouse) up and down also helps.

2) if the freeze gets so bad that the cursor wouldn't move try shutting down the PC, unplugging the cord to the power supply, toggling the power supply switch to discharge the motherboard capacitors, then turn on the PC and reboot.

3) clean the battery contacts. Remove the battery and use one side of a Q-tip soaked in isopropanol and clean the contacts on the battery and inside the mouse (the 3 prongs sticking out of the end of the battery slot). Make sure to use the dry end of the Q-tip to remove all of the isopropanol before sticking the battery back into the mouse.

4) if the transmitter is near a wireless router or other transmitter (bluetooth radio, modem, etc.) place it as far away from these devices as possible.

System Optimizer Registry Cleaner Reeked Havok System

Feb 17, 2009

I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. My system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit Intel core 2 Duo 2.6 GHZ.

Black Screen: System Crash And Rebooted System

Mar 30, 2008

I have a problem currently with Windows Vista Ultimate(Integrale), this occurred last Friday evening. I was finishing off a word document when suddenly all went black. As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.

I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. Why then am I suddenly crippled for an entire weekend by Microsoft security and how can I rectify the situation perminently

System Restore Shadow Copies: System Error

Apr 25, 2008

I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:

1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. The capability to restore to a previous point in time or having the new Shadow Copy feature available can be a time saver if something goes wrong or if you delete a file. source: John Barnett Windows Vista Support I keep getting an error message. I seem to remember doing this before with my XP but can't remember how. Is there an easier way?

How To Increase System System Performance

Jun 10, 2009

I thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:

This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.

Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........

System Restore / System Checkpoint

May 11, 2008

I remember with WinXP that if I had my computer turned on and was not using it for a certain length of time (maybe 30 minutes), it would 'automatically' create a 'System Checkpoint' in the System Restore area. I could also 'manually' create a 'System Checkpoint.' What I would like to know is - doees Vista (Home Premium) create such an 'automatic' System Checkpoint if I have notebook turned on, but don't use if for about 30 minutes?

(I believe there is a way to turn on an Automatic 'System Checkpoint' that you can schedule to be done at a certain time. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about an 'automatic' System Checkpoint' that is done if the computer is turned on, but not used for 30 minutes or more (approximately).

System Restore...

May 18, 2010

Daughters laptop was reporting that the HDD was about to fail, should backup and repair.

The concensus of opinion suggested a new HDD was the answer.

Have done that and created the restore disks from the original HDD.

Started the restore and went ok until nearly at the end of formatting the new HDD when I got the message

"error if it happens again contact HP" it did not happen again and appeared to restore files ok, did a verify and no errors.

Trying to boot from the HDD it now fails. Errors report registry incorrect plus others.

Cannot load my Vista version as is 64bit.

I cannot obviously send the errors to MS as the thing will not boot.

Any solutions obvious apart from getting a disk containing Vista 32 bit system

Laptop is an HP Presario running Vista HOme Premium 32.
