How To Disable Auto Shutdown Due To Overheating?

Jun 28, 2009

My Gateway LX6810-01 has a plethora of issues which has lead to my decision to replace it. Since my new machine won't arrive for a few weeks, I'm stuck using this one till it does. I've had issues with overheating and the machine shuts down, in as little as 5-10 minutes of doing anything more graphically challenging than checking my email or writing this post.

I want to disable the auto shutdown feature so I can actually watch an entire movie, or perhaps even play a game. Since I dont really care about damaging the machine with a new one on the way, I just need the most effective way to do this. I've searched through my BIOS settings and haven't found anything relating to overheating, or temperatures. If someone knows of maybe a hidden, or "locked" BIOS feature, or one I'm missing, or even a solution with software, or in Vista, that would be great.Again, just wanted to say I'm not worried about damage to the machine, I just need it to stop shutting down on me when it gets alittle warm.

Blue Screen After Shutdown - Auto Reboot

Feb 6, 2009

I've ran BitDefender Total Security 2009 and got off a few trojans, ran Spybot and got a few as well. I've also ran the cmd prompt command sfc/scannow (with no issues), but I am still getting a blue screen after I shutdown. After it automatically reboots, I get a Windows prompt saying it has recovered from an unexpected shutdown, here is the report: I've zipped and attached (the attachment system doesn't seem to work, so I uploaded it to MediaFire) all of the files that it says could help describe the problem. Here is the download link: 'systemfiles.zip'

Some Folder Disable Auto Arrange

Oct 15, 2009

i've got a few folder questions: would there be a way to add the option to 'sort by type' to every folder? i use this often, and it gets annoying to have to add it manually. secondly, is is possible to disable 'auto arrange' and enable 'align to grid' for EVERY folder? i can't stand auto arrange, personally. i tried 'folder options > apply to folders' but got no success. also, a bit unrelated, but i've come across occasional folders that don't display the dot next to 'sort by -> (whatever)'. i can click 'sort by type', for example and it will re-order the icons but won't show the dot. this is a bug, right? (two folders that it isn't working in is C:users and C:users(username)music)

Cpu/motherboard Overheating

May 4, 2009

Basically the machine just switches itself off, frequently and without warning. There is no obvious pattern to when this happens. It's happened whilst booting up, after a few minutes. a few hours and occassionally doesn't happen at all. Tech support appear certain that it is either due to the cpu/motherboard overheating or a problem with the operating system. I've checked the temperatures on rebooting after it's shutdown and these have never exceeded 53 and 37 degrees (CPU and M/B respectively). Tech support seemed confident that this pointed to a problem with Vista.

I tried running the the machine in safe mode and it still shut itself down (although it did seem to be slightly more stable). In addition to shutting down unexpectedly the machine was prone to freezing with almost all software 'not responding' (including Task Manager which was a new one on me ). On the occassions when I could get task manager to work with the machine frozen it indicated that almost none of the system resources were being used (CPU usage about 5% and memory in the low 20% area).

Having concluded that a reinstallation was required I did a clean install using Brink's very helpful tutorial. At first the machine seemed stable after the installation however a couple of days later it began to shut down again. Other than that problem the operating system seems to be stable (so partial success). I've disabled all the obvious sleep options in the control panel so I don't think it's anything to do with that.

Shutdown Causes Hardisks To Spin Up Shutdown 4 Times

I have read elsewhere of some users experiencing the problem of hard disks making the infamous clicking noises on shutdown of any version of vista. I don't know if its only SATA HD but thats what I have and I am experiencing the same thing. It has me concerned that the clicking of the HD arms might be unnecessary wear and tear. any fixes for this?

Mystery Shutdown

Apr 3, 2009

Yesterday after a week long holiday, I came home and started my computer which ran fine until this afternoon.

I was out and about doing things and I left the computer on and logged online as I usually do.

When I came home, I found it had shut down and restarted and I was at my Windows Logon screen.

I figured we must have had some sort of electrical outage, so I logged in and let my Intel RAID storage manger do it's thing (it has to re-verify and re-match the data on my two RAID 1 drives).

I wandered back in a few minutes later to find the computer had gone into a CheckDisc. Check Disc didn't find any bad things so I let it run through and restarted, now all seems well again.

I am curious as to why it might have shut down in the first place and not quite sure where to look.

Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer says no critical errors, just one error message that says the shut down was unexpected.

Won't Auto Sleep After SP1

Mar 23, 2008

I have three PCs in my house running Vista. Before installing SP1, allof them would routinely go to sleep automatically, as per the powermanagement settings. Since installing SP1, they continue running without ever going into sleep mode. I can still enter sleep mode manually, which works fine, it's just the automatic sleep that won't work.Only software in common across all three machines (other than Vista)is Office 2007 and Windows Live OneCare. Both were installed prior to installing SP1.

X64 Shutdown, Controller

Dec 11, 2007

I recently added a new hard drive to my system to give me a bit more storage room. All drives in the system are SATA, 2x Raptor 36GB, 1 Plextor DVD burner, and the new Samsung 250GB. The Raptors are currently not in a RAID. What occurs during Vista shutdown? It may give me some more insight into my problem.

During shutdown, the new drive gets thrashed for 3-5 minutes before the system drive updates config and shuts down. Could this be some sort of conflict with the controller? Raptors are SATA 150 and the Samsung is 300. Is Vista writing a system restore to that drive at shutdown? (A friend theorized that, and it sounded logical enough)

Lose IP After Shutdown

Jul 29, 2009

Brother purchased new laptop. Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1. Turned on machine and connected fine via ethernet cable to home network. I logged in remotely and watched and acted when required as both Vista and McAfee downloaded and installed numerous updates. On one occassion when asked to restart now or later after McAfee finished updating, I chose later. I then installed LogMeIn on this computer so that upon reboot I would have more control.

That may or may have nothing to do with issue now but ever since then, when warm or cold re-start of computer is done, computer does not obtain an IP. Have to go to CPanel/Network/Diagnose and choose automatic rediscovery of IP which works just fine.
