Sep 7, 2009I'm using an HP a6827c dual channel 64 bit machine and have been trying to disable the completely the admin control system using a solution from this forum by going to an elevated command prompt and typing a command string. the instructions say to type using "Bold" characters. (Does not work in regular font)(I tried that). How does one change to bold font in the command prompt window?
I'm a beginner at this and especially in Vista. DOS was such a long time ago so I need help badly. I understand that doing away with admin controls compromises security but plan to switch back after I clean up some of the files that I can't seem to delete now. I have been working with the Brink reply 6/1/07 and like someone else I read about on one of the posts, I feel that if we own our computer, are the only administrators and users, that we should have total control and not the computer or MS.
Device Installation - Elevated Privileges Dialoge Box
Mar 23, 2008I have a quesiton which has been bugging me since we rolled out Vista to our desktops almost a years ago....Whenever I have to go to a users PC to install a new device (USB Storage Key for example) I usually have to spend about 10 minutes there as the Elevated Privileges dialoge box will pop up several times, as each component of the device tries to install itself...Is there any way to set this up so that when you apporve a device or installation, all the drivers and components for that device are also approved for install - it's quite frustratring having to spend 10 minutes doing a task which should take 30 seconds!

Jun 17, 2009I have an Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard in my home theater system. I just upgraded the CPU (to X4) & BIOS (to 2302). My initial problem after the upgrade was the BSOD in 32-bit Vista blaming the file "amdlld.sys." I booted into safe mode and renamed the amdlld.sys file. Now the machine boots up fine with no BSOD. My question is: is there any Microsoft Vista 32bit system files needed for the new X4 that I need to install? (the AMD website only shows processor drivers for Windows XP and Server 2003. . .but nothing for Vista) The reason I ask: while my system appears to be working fine. . .the Winrar benchmarks do not reflect the scores of a typical AMD quad core CPU (about 1350). Instead, I am getting around 350. Something is missing here. But what?

Oct 12, 2009Using my ISP (Roadrunner Carolinas) speed test site; I get around 200 to 400 kbps download speeds using IE in normal mode. If I boot to Safe Mode, I get around 3500 to 4500 kbps, which is what it should be (this is what I used to get in normal mode before I re-installed Vista). Running the same speed test with Firefox, I get around 1500 to 2000 kbps in normal mode, but if I try to download a file it ransfers at only the 200 to 400 kbsp rate (if I'm lucky). Here's more detail about the system and what I've done so far:
Installed all updates including SP2.
Using Windows Firewall, no anti-virus.
Updated network drivers directly from NVidia (Chipset is nForce750i)
Updated graphics card drivers directly from NVidia
Disabled all LAN protocols except for Client for Microsoft Networks and IPv4
Connected via ethernet cable directly to cable modem, no router.
I've deliberately refrained from loading anything but the basics until I can get this sorted out..........

Oct 15, 2009when i turn on my computer, an error message comes saying "Windows failed to load because a file is missing or corrupt File: Netio.sys Status: 0xc0000221" This started when i was clearing my computer of useless programs, and after i deleted Realtime player or Quicktime player, (can't remember which) an error message jumped from the taskbar saying something about Network device driver. After that every time i start the computer, the "Windows failed to load" message pops up. The first half a year, it was solved by pressing enter, to "Choose an operating system to start: Windows Vista" and then to "Windows error recovery (start windows normally, safe mode etc)" and back to "Windows failed to start", repeating it 3-20 times. Then i had a familiar "Unexpected shutdown" during a game, and now, the "Enter spamming technique" doesn't work anymore. All i can access at the moment is Windows memory diagnostic tool, and Bios setup utility. Is there any way to fix this through the setup utility or some other manner?

Apr 14, 2008I can't find a way to search for file types in Vista without entering part of a file name. For example, if I want to search my C drive for all PDF files or all photos, the search function won't work without entering text from a file name (which doesn't work, because all files of a particular type don't necessarily share letters or characteristics in their names). Has anyone else experienced this problem, or am I missing something?

May 15, 2010Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs. It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.
Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.) I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.
File Names Not Sorted Properly In File List
Mar 23, 2008When I open a folder with a list of files for all View Options, the files are not listed in proper ascending sequence. I indexed the files to make sure that indexing may not be the factor in the Sort By Name not working properly. After the files were indexed, clicked the Sort By Name item in the View menu item, and the files are stilled not sorted porperly. Has anyone encountered this similar problem ? I suspect this may be a bug in Windows Vista File System. The folder had 87 files in it.

But it created a file on my desktop which is corrupted and the original file is corrupted (neither will open). I am saving a new Excel file to a directory and I want to give it a similar name as a text file that already resides in that directory. However, when I "Save As" the Excel file in the selected directory, the only other files I see in that directory are other Excel files. I don't see any of the other files that I know are in there (Word, Powerpoint, pdf, etc.). In prior versions of Excel, I have been able to see all of the files in a

Nov 24, 2009i'm trying to change the Start Menu icon on my Vista 32-bit. I have looked EVERYWHERE and the only way it appears to be possible is by downloading a program caled ResHack. I did, but all the tutorials are saying to open the explorer.exe file and either look for a 6801.bmp file, which I don't have (looks like it's only on Windows 7), or to look for a "String Table" folder which I don't have either.I added a screenshot of the folders I get when I open explorer.exe in ResHack. PLEASE tell me if I have some kind of fake Vista version (which is weird because it was already installed when I bought the computer from the store) or what is going on?

Mar 23, 2008I've tried and tried, please I hope you can help me. I have a Toshiba A215-4817 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32bit. My troubles began when my cd/dvd was not operating properly. Toshiba support said my operating system was corrupt. I didn't believe that just because the cd/dvd wasn't working properly that the os is corrupt, maybe they were right.
I have extremely important info on my hd as I do taxes for a living.
In an effort to trouble shoot the cd/dvd I booted into safe mode. No-one tole me that the administrator account is disabled by default! So now I can't get out of safe mode. I have access to only my limited user account and uac is enabled. System restore doesn't change boot options.
I can't edit registry = access denied, cmd.exe when trying to activate administrator account = system error 5.

Aug 4, 2009My DVD R/W device failed and I purchased a Pioneer DVR-K17 replacement which is a dual layer DVD R/W device. It appeared to install correctly and automatically under Vista.
I noticed a problem when I tried to play a DVD, it was stuttering. I went to the device manager and tried to set the drive to DMA mode, since it was in PIO. The settings will not "stick". It always reverts to PIO. I have tried to find a way into the BIOS of this notebook, but there is very limited access to any settings by hitting the F2 key just after powering up. I cannot see anything anywhere on the internet on how to make this work.
Can't Get Out Of Safe Mode?
Mar 23, 2008I had an issue with one of my games and it directed me to go into safe mode to uninstall it. Now that it's uninstalled, I can't get out of safe mode. I've been through this forum in and out. I've done nearly all the things that it has stated that come close to my issue. I'm still in here. I've been in and out for 3 hours now. I've gone through the msconfig, and told it to restart in normal mode, I'm still in safe mode. I've used the F8 button while starting it, and told it to go to safe mode, I'm still here. I've even checked to see if it was the resolution, I've set it to my default settings of 1280x720, and restart it, it's still in safe mode. I've done EVERYTHING that I can think of.

If this is true, then will email also download from the server if the Windows Mail program is left on and maximized and the DSL modem is left on?
