Disabling Cores In ?

Is there a way to do this? Say if I wanted to disable 3 out of the 4 cores on an AMD Phenom X4 processor.

Is this totally dependent on my motherboard BIOS and CPU itself?

Remove An OS From Multi-boot

Automatic Multi Dvr-ms Convert

Mar 4, 2009

Does anyone know a freeware program that can convert multiple dvr-ms files automatically to wmv or avi? My Playstation 3 can play media from my Vista desktop computer. Unfortunately, it can not play the dvr-ms file type Media center creates.

I record multiple TV shows on a day. Vista windows movie maker can convert them from dvr-ms to wmv, but can convert 1 file per project. Converting takes very long, so if I have to convert them manually 1 by 1, it takes too much time.

What I would like is to have a program that can convert multiple dvr-ms files simultaneously or through a automatic waiting list. Just like Windows media player can do with MP3. You place a CD in your computer, choose which songs you want to convert to MP3, and media player converts them automatically 1 by 1. You don???t have to do anything else.

Multi Page .tif Documents

Mar 16, 2009

I got my computer twith Vista on it this summer and could no longer view multi page .tif files. I need to be able to do this for my job. My old computer had XP and it used MS fax and picture viewer, or something like that. I used this forum in September to figure out my problem, and someone instructed me on a download at Microsoft that would fix this problem. I think it is Microsoft Document Image Writer, but I could be wrong.

This fixed my problem. Now, for some reason, my computer has defaulted to QuickTime and it will only allow me to view one page. I can't remember what program I used before (whether it was the Image Writer or not), and even so, I don't know how to get it to default to another program. I have tried to search previous posts to get the answer to my post from September 2008, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

Running Multi Boot With Vista

Mar 23, 2008

Has anybody installed Vista twice in separate disk partitions on the same PC? I've been successfully running multi-boot with 2 XPs and a Vista on 1 PC. There's plenty info about on how to do that. Now I'm going to separate all XP installs onto 1 PC, and all Vista installs onto another PC. Will this make life easier? So I'll be running Vista Home Premium twice on 1 PC. One install will be for production use, and the other for testing. I've not seen any info on doing this.

Multi-boot Option Not Working Anymore

May 12, 2009

I had successfully installed win xp pro on my pre-installed vista home computer.

When I used to boot up, I had the option of selecting one of those 2 OS. I begun having problems with xp pro so I "repaired" it using my xp pro cd. Now, I can't boot into either OS. Please help. I have tinkered with the MBR, FIXMBR, FIXBOOt commands but can't get anything to work. All I get when I boot up is the selection of Keyboards,
language and then I get a menu of options such as Repair startup, Memory diagnostics, Recovery (to factory settings) etc., I don't have vista dvd since it came pre-installed on my computer.

I do have xp but am afraid of re-installing xp pro since I have documents on borh drives (each drive contains its own operating system).

For example, my c drive contains vista, (d is recovery on the same hard drive) and xp pro is on a separate physical drive.

I can see that both drives have windows on them but I am unable to boot. I have managed to get vistaboot pro but can't seem to run it.

I can't get xp to run nor can I get vista to run.

Microsoft Transient Multi-Monitor Manager?

Apr 27, 2008

I have desktop PC and only one monitor and I can't see why i need to run it *ever* and yet this task is in my scheduler programmed to run every time anyone logs on - and it's been running now for 17 hours continuous? Do i need this task to run? There seems to be dozens of these 'apparently' unnecessary tasks being performed - e.g. 'mcupdate' checks for media centre updates (which i never use) - even if i did a check once per month would be sufficient - but this is scheduled to run every - single - day. does this explain why i don't have enough processing power left to open an explorer window in under 20 seconds despite having 4 times the power of my ol XP machine?

Blue Screen Due To Core Multi-Processing

Apr 27, 2009

I had lot of issues while installing the Vista x64 Operating System and after a long research, I was able to locate the issue. i.e. I had to disable "Core Multi-Processing" from the BIOS while installing the Operating System. However after successfully installing the Vista Operating System and all the latest services packs/updates when I enabled "Core Multi-Processing" from the BIOS, my system would work for few minutes and then crashes (Does not restart, but just hangs) with a Stop blue screen error stating "A Clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the allocated time interval. Stop: 0x00000101". I just have 1 processor installed on the first slot of the M/B. The issue occurs even if I sit idle and do not perform anything on the computer.

If I disable "Core Multi-Processing", my system works fine with out any issues.
I have even downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates and drivers for NIC card and sound card. I do not have any 3rd party hardware devices attached to it. I also do not have any softwares installed on the computer yet. I even tried re-installing the OS couple of time.

Multi-boot: Audio Work Video Is Not Available

Jul 29, 2009

I have Vista Home Premium 64-bit and Windows 7 installed and use the standard Microsoft boot manager from Windows 7 to dual boot. Each operating system is in the first primary partition of a hard drive. No problems. However, I think I need reinstall WinXP so that I can view some old AVI files that use the Intel IV50 codec. For some reason Vista does not like the AVI files and best I can tell the codec add-in only works under WinXP Media Player. What is the best way/program that will allow me to boot either Vista, Windows 7 or Windows XP OR is there a magic bullet to view and convert the old AVI files. I have tried Format Factory and come up empty. No matter what I try the audio works but the video is not available.

Multi Spreadsheets In Excel 07 Process Disappears

Jul 29, 2009

I have been running Office 2007 for a few months now and I am just now in need of opening TWO Excel spreadsheets at once. I can open one in the first tab then select a new tab for another populated spreadsheet and import. As I remember from 2003 this should populate two tabs with two spreadsheets! However when I follow this process the first sheet disappears altogether superceded by the second with no trace of the first remaining? When I close the second instance of Excel I now have my first spreadsheet visible. This would be funny if I didn't require comparison of sheet1 with sheet2 preferrably in a side by side manner. or import and sharing of data in multiple tabs.

Improve Multi-Tasking With Virtual Desktops

Aug 27, 2008

Microsoft’s Windows Sysinternals group has released a new virtual desktop utility called Desktops.  If you have used virtual desktops on *nix or spaces on OS X you will feel right at home with Sysinternals Desktops.

For those of you that are new to virtual desktops, they are a great way to organizing your work and help you multi-task better.

Running Sysinternals Desktops is like having 4 monitors with 4 different desktops that you can have different windows or applications open on. You can easily switch between the desktops with your mouse or shortcut keys. I like to break up my tasks on different desktops. For example, I have Outlook open on virtual desktop 1 and my web developer apps like Dreamweaver and Photoshop open on desktop 2. When I am switching between different tasks I can just switch my current desktop view instead of minimizing and maximizing windows. This allows me to quickly switch between tasks without losing my window locations and setups.

After you download Sysinternals Desktops and run it you will see a new icon in the system tray that looks like 4 blocks. If you click on the icon you will see a preview of what you have open on each desktop....

File Sharing In Multi-Operating System Community

Mar 23, 2008

I recently got a new Vista machine - not because of a desire, but because of it becoming necessary. Anyhow, I have taken the steps to establish a network and have assured that the same network ID is on all computers. The several operating systems include Windows 98, XP Home Edition, and Vista Home Premium. The Vista Machine is set to private network status, set to share files and folders, set to share printers, set with Password Protection turned off, and set with Neetwork Discovery turned on. I have also gone to the folders that I have set to share on the computer (the C drive, among others) and have made sure to set the permissions so that "Everyone" has full access and control.

Lastly, I have set-up the system to disable User Account Control. Per Microsoft, everyone who has a computer associated with the network should be able to freely acces, read, and write to the files, printers, etc. that I have shared on this computer, right? On the network maps on all computers, all computers are visible. Furthermore, once a computer on the network is selected, the shared items are usually visible. But, for some reason, no computer can access the shared materials on the vista machine even though from the vista machine, I can access all shared materials on the other computers. When the shared materials on the Vista Machine are attempted to be accessed, a "Access Denied" Error/Alert is displayed. I have restarted all computer AND the router to no success.

Multi Monitor Bug: Make Sure Aero Is Enabled, And That Your Taskbar Is Always Transparent

Jun 23, 2008

I think I've found a bug with the way Vista handles dual screens and wallpapers. I'm sure there are PLENTY of us who have dual monitors. For those of you who do, try this:

1. Make sure Aero is enabled, and that your taskbar is always transparent.
2. Download any dual screen capable wallpaper program. For instance, Ultramon, DisplayFusion, etc.
3. Set a DIFFERENT WALLPAPER PER MONITOR. Make sure to do this.
4. Observe?

You'll see THROUGH the transparency of the taskbar that the wallpaper schema is screwed up. There is a small part of the wallpaper that is cut off at the bottom right, around the system tray icons, and looks like the wallpaper repeating, or is confused with the wallpaper on the secondary monitor............

Repair Install: Interfere With System's Ability To Multi Boot?

Jun 29, 2008

I partitioned a new hard drive and formatted it using my Windows XP Home Ed. SP2 Install CD. I then installed Win XP. I then installed Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit on the other partition. ( I have two partitions on a single drive, C: and D This has been working great for me for the last 5 months. Today I have a reason to perform a repair install on just the Windows XP partition. I have performed a Win XP repair install successfully in the past using the XP SP2 install CD but never when my system was set up as dual boot. If I perform a repair install using my WinXP install disk to repair the Windows XP installation, will this leave my Vista partition untouched? Will it at all interfere with the system's ability to multi boot? I'm not very concerned about not being able to boot up into Windows XP but it's extremely critical that my system's ability to boot up into Vista is not compromised.
