Front + Rear Panel Sound In Vista
Jul 25, 2007
I have an expensive motherboard (ASUS P5N32-SLI SE Deluxe) with 5.1 sound (Realtek AC'97) IO on the back panel and an internal 10 pin (with 2 pins missing) AC'97 header to which I should be able to attach the AC'97 lead from my case's front panel headphone + mic sockets.
However, when I plug in the internal header, I lose the front left and right speakers from my 5.1 back panel socket (without getting it out the front socket either). I assume this is something to do with the way vista has only one "speakers" thing in control panel's "sound" thing and how it detects if things are unplugged. The only way I have been able to get the back panel sound back has been to unplug the front panel from the internal IO header.
Does anyone know how to fix this so that I can use both the front panel (headphones) and back panel (speakers) without turning my computer off to attach a lead to the motherboard?

I have a really annoying issue with Vista Ultimate SP1.
My PC specs are as follows:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 Ghz
Nvidia 680i SLI PCI-E
2x Geforce 6800 GS
HD Realtek Audio (onboard)
4.0 GB RAM
My issue is that I can't get any non-USB microphone to be picked up on any input, front or rear panel. I have installed the newest Realtek Audio HD drivers (2.00) and just recently did a fresh install of Vista with SP1 thinking that that would solve the issue. My system is fully up to date according to Windows Update.
However, though the sound manager realizes when I plug in a microphone, there is absolutely no level of input no matter how much I yell into it. I have two separate microphones (both working on other computers i.e my laptop's Vista install) which are not picked up at all.
I have cross checked and triple checked that the sound settings are all unmuted and corresponding within Realtek's sound manager as well as Vista's. This solves nothing. There is still no recognition of a working mic.
I am totally stumped as the microphone used to work on Vista when I had the automatic HD Audio Driver installed from Microsoft and then suddenly stopped. However, I have since tried to revert to the old driver but to no avail.

i bought this system on 2nd november. just imagine, i spend ~1800$ to buy this pc AND after 17 days, 17 days i still cant get sound out of my onboard sound card!
the problem is that the ANALOG BACK PANEL and FRONT PANEL does not work
Here are gigabyte tech support's answers to my problem:
"We are really sorry for the inconvenience you have with our product and According to your description, a further testing or examination to your system might be required."
today, my supplier tested the motherboard in front of my eyes, and it worked fine THERE.
they said maybe it is your graphics card's driver (HD 4870) that makes this problem. so i came home, uninstalled the VGA driver and ATI HD Audio driver and STILL NO SOUND my speakers are fine (i tested them with another pc and with my mp3 player) and i installed the latest drivers for everything.
i also e-mailed Realtek technical support last week, and they didnt answer!
i asked in 3 or 4 other forums (tomshardware, anandtech, guru3d....) no one could help me
if u need to know anything, please let me know and here are some pictures, maybe they can help u to figure out what is wrong with my pc
[url]
as u can see in the last picture, the ANALOG BACK PANEL is inactive in Realtek HD Audio Manager.

I've searched for a similar problem in other threads to no avail, so here goes, I recently bought an MSI K9A2GM-FIH AMD 780G AM2+ Motherboard and am running Vista Home Premium 32bit os, I need to find a suitable rear panel connector to take the HiDef Audio from the on-board header to my AV amp. There was nothing supplied in the box and the reseller is less than helpful, any ideas where I can get an back panel connector/adapter to give me either co-ax or optical audio out from the MB?

I've just installed the OS Vista Ultimate 64 in my Asus P5N-D motherboard. The problem is that when I was using the XP 32bits the front panel was working perfectly. And now on Vista it doesn't, and I didn't touched the connectors.

I have a weird problem with my Vista partition and my creative x-fi xtreme PCI express card. Drivers / control panel can detect my headphones being plugged into the port in my front panel. If I do a channel test I can hear the "left channel" / "right channel" test audio track play through the headphones. But for the life of me, no matter what I do, I can not get normal windows sound (media player, power dvd etc...) to go through the head phones when they are plugged into the front panel and it's driving me crazy. I've set headphones to be the default play back device but nothing.
What kills me is that if I boot into my windows XP partition, everything is fine. The speakers are even muted when I plug my headphones in and sound comes out of them perfectly. Am I doing something wrong? or is it just a driver bug? I'm using the latest vista drivers (via creative update). I'm running 64 bit Vista business by the way

I am installing a new Gigabyte mobo (MA78GM-US2H) in an HP Media Center Case. The pin layout between the case & mobo is nearly the same except that the HD LED and the Power LED are reversed on the new mobo. The power switch pins are correct. The case does not have reset capability. Does it matter that the two LED pin connectors are reversed or should I attempt to change the wires coming from the case?

The problem is that when I'm listening to music or playing a game, the sound works just fine on my speakers. But if I plug in my headphones to the front port, the sound continues to come out of my speakers, and not my headphones. The only way to get the sound to come out of my headphones and not the speakers is to re-launch the application that is producing sound. The same is true vice-versa (going from headphones back to speakers). I have set my default output device to be the headphones and have played around with every setting in the Sound Blaster and Vista Sound control panels I can find - nothing seems to work.
I have read through other forums with similar issues, but they're all either a different issue (i.e. they get sound out of the speakers and the headphones - I only get it out of one, and not the right one), or the threads seem to have dropped off unsolved.

I have a new laptop, HP Compaq, running Vista. I have the volume set on high on the task bar, and in the sound properties in the control panel, but it is hardly audible. When I test the sound in properties it's ok and Windows Media player is just about ok. (or will do) but unless I'm right at the laptop, i can't hear any other of the sounds, they are so low. i.e when I'm buzzed on IM, email notification, critical battery etc. I know sounds on laptops aren't that good unless you have speakers, but this is ridiculously low. May as well be on mute!

I have a Dell Insipron desktop with Vista Home Premium. It's a standard-style desktop, mouse, keyboard, etc... I'd like to purchase a touch screen LCD monitor, and do away with the mouse and keyboard. I've read about the Vista option of Touch Pointer, but I don't see it in the Vista Control Panel like the documentation says. Will that option "appear" if I make the touch screen LCD purchase and hook it up? Or, is that something special for tablet/mobile PCs?

I have a dual boot system with Win XP on one partition and Vista 64 Ultimate on the second partition. Sometime recently, perhaps at the latest Windows Update on Vista, my nVidia Control Panel stopped working in Vista 64. I am using nVidia driver 185.85, the latest non-beta version available. I am using nVidia system tools 6.05, the latest set available. I have cleaned out my drivers with Driver Sweeper, and reloaded them with no change. I have loaded the drivers with all virus software shut down, with all unnecessary apps shut down. When I try to start up the nVidia control panel, whether in the Windows Control Panel or other shortcut, Vista tells me that "nVidia Control Panel has stopped working". I am getting the impression that the nVidia drivers are not running, since when I add them they are not defaulting to max resolution like they normally do. The system seems to be running on some default video driver instead. CPU, GPU, MCP temperatures are nominal, no indications of problems there.......

Because of the recent fiasco with Creative / Daniel K the straw has broken the camels back and I am trying real hard to not use my X-Fi XtremeGamer, and never buy Creative again. Although I didn't personally have many issues with it (and Alchemy is great for Vista...wish there was one for everyone) I don't want to spend my life wondering what will happen next with my drivers..
I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R rev 1.0. This board has the Realtek ALC889A chip and when I first started using it in XP I was so very impressed with both the quality and the features. Specifically speaker fill. I love upmixing my music to 5.1 and at the time I was having weird issues with Creatives own expansion setting so I happily used my onboard for quite a while.
Then I decided to upgrade to Vista and noticed immediately that things were not working the way they had on XP.. DirectSound removal aside, I couldn't even get music to upmix properly.. So here I am again, trying to get by without my X-Fi and I've installed the latest drivers from Realtek's web site for Vista x64........

i just bought LOGITECH x-530 5.1 Speaker system. when i go to "Realtek HD Audio manager" and choose "5.1 speaker" the "rear pair" is grayed out! Here is a picture; if i change it to 7.1. then the "rear pair" will appear and i will be able to preform the test and hear sound... B-U-T ---> when i will play movies.. (divx, mkx, bluray.. ect'...) i don't hear the people talking.. it's like the wrong sound configuration information goes to the speakers. it will seem the people talking coms from the sub-woofer.. and again really really dim... .+ the rear speakers will work but very low (even when i put it on full volume) . any idea how to set up correctly the sound ? so even if i am on 7.1. the sound will go to the speakers as 5.1 and send the right information to each speaker?

I have Vista x32 SP1 installed. The installation went fine, but I have noticed after the Conexant HD Audio driver update I had a no-sound issue. This went away after a restart. I then installed SP1 via WU and I again had a no-sound issue. I searched for an answer and found that someone had opened device manager, scanned for new hardware and was able to hear sound again. Well, I too am able to do this (open device manager, etc), but I have to do this ever time I resume windows from hibernation or after restarting to have sound. Is there some other way I can resolve this issue without accessing device manager after every restart/resume?

I have the old problem of the hyperlinks not working in preview mode.
I've done the reg fix found here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;823720
which always worked ok in XP but doesn't seem to cure the problem in Vista 64.
I'm wondering if it's caused by there being two versions of IE, 32 and 64 bit.

When i had XP on my computer everything was working fine. I did an overlay of Vista and now any audio device with a jack won't work.. My USB headphones do... I have gone through all the playback settings, searched through all of control panel to do with sound. I have downloaded the necessary realtek drivers (High Definition Audio Device) and nothing. I have also tried plugging the jack in the front instead of the back. The speakers work on any XP machine... just having troubles with my vista machine.

1) Headset plugged into front jacks is not working and it looks like my PC hasn't even sensed the headset bcos I expected it to it ask me about what I have plugged into the jack if it was not sure.
2) Rear speakers are working fine for playbacks. Rear jack microphone is working for recording but the issue is the audio being recorded cannot be heard from speakers. After I stop recording I can play and hear the recording but not while I am recording it.
Has someone faced this and has some solutions for me? Let me make it clear that same hardware works absolutely fine when the OS was XP. I had a fresh Vista install couple of days back on hardware with Intel motherboard, Intel core 2 duo 946GZ Express chipset. I have every possible (also all optional) latest update for the OS. I have installed latest drivers meant for Vista (audio and graphics accelerators) downloaded and installed yesterday from Intel site.
