Physical RAM Being Reported Incorrectly In Everest

Feb 24, 2009

I have 8GB RAM (4x2GB sticks), works fine to my knowledge, and shows up on the main screen, and in the BIOS as 8GB. Good stuff. However, recently in order to try and improve boot speeds I went into the pagefile and set it as 0 after reading that it isnt needed with this ammount of ram. After rebooting I went into msconfig's advanced boot screen, set the number of processors to 4 and MAX RAM... but it would only see 3GB RAM.

I installed Everest to check this out and it reports that my physical RAM is 3GB, task manager reports the same. What went wrong, and how can I get all 8GB showing? My GPU is a 1GB 9800 card so wouldnt have thought the rest was going towards gfx. Ive taken out some sticks and tried again but Everest still only sees GB, even with 8gb, 6gb or 4gb inside?

Network XP Pro To Home Can Not Working

Mar 23, 2008

I'm setting up a computer for my house and wanted to transfer files from my XP laptop to the vista desktop. I tried crossover cable and router, but cannot completely setup the network between the two computers. I've tried with firewalls on and off, and the laptop does NOT have norton (on the gazillion forums I've read, norton is a problem.) The workgroups are the same (I changed them repeatedly just in case) and I've tried static IP addresses On Vista:

Network set to private
*Network discovery on
*file sharing on
*public folder sharing on
*printer sharing on
*password protected sharing off (also tried on)
*when viewing network map,

I can see the xp on the map but cannot click on it. (connected by dashes, I'm assuming because the xp is now setup on wireless. when I used the crossover cable it was a solid line. same on wired connection)*when viewing computers and devices, can see the xp and router but get the following error when I click on the xp: "Windows cannot access \computer-name"*I can ping the IP address of the xp but not the xp computer name**I can NOT open the folder by typing the xp IP address or xp computer name into explorer (\IP-ADDRESS or \COMPUTER_NAME)....

Add Printer Not Working - Home Premium

Apr 7, 2008

I have an Epson Stylus c84 Inkjet that, according to the Epson support page, should already have drivers in Vista (I should just be able to plug in the printer, Vista will see it and load the appropriate driver, etc). However, Vista cannot find the correct driver and asks for the original driver CD, to which I try anyway and it still does not work. I contacted Epson who suggested I try and use the Add Printer feature. However, upon trying this, an error came up as soon as I pressed the icon: "Windows Cannot Open Add Printer. Operation could not be completed (error 0x000000c1)." I did not receive the original install disc from eMachines, and they have been aggravating when attempting to get service from them.

Reinstall Not Working For Home Prem.

Jun 2, 2009

I have windows vista home premium 32 bit. Its on a dell inspiron (a laptop which is a little over a year old). Recently I had to reformat it due to clutter and possible Trojans on my hard drive. However I cant seem to get the thing to boot. -I put in widows vista cd and boot from that then hit "install now" and choose the "custom" option (not upgrade) then I formated all drives (recovery and main c drive)and then chose my main drive to install it on it does fine copying, expanding, installing features and updates and then reboots and goes back to that page (of the copying, expanding, etc... page) and says "completing installation..." with the pulseing "..."

(meaning its still thinking I suppose) and then after 45 minutes or so it goes to a black screen with a cursor and does nothing else. -if i try to reboot: it will give me the message for the safe mode etc...on it and if i choose normal mode it goes to the windows booting page with the loading bar below it and just sits like that (note: the loading bar is going across but pauses ever so often like it cant get over something and never starts). I have done several reinstallations (with xp and vista) but have never had this problem before

The correct time zone is displayed, I have disabled the internet updates and I have set the correct time who knows how many times. However it can take DAYS for it to move forward minutes. sometimes, it does a time warp and goes back in time. The BIOS clock has no problems, displays the correct date and time every time, but it is now beginning to bug the heck out of me.

Outlook 2007 No Longer Working After Upgrade From Home Premium To Ultimate

Oct 18, 2009

I had a copy of Ultimate laying around the house and decided for some stupid reason to upgrade the OS yesterday. It's been a nightmare. After 10 hours I've reinstalled many, many programs and have been able to get the to launch all of them with the exception of Outlook. I've searched for a solution and have had no luck following a solution to the problem I'm encountering.

I'm getting the following error message:

>>> Cannot open your default e-mail folders. An unexpected error has occured. MAPI was unable to load the information service mspst.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured.<<<

I have successfully used Outlook 2007 for the past 6 months on my home PC. The problems I am encountering began immediately following the upgrade to Ultimate (32 bit--I thought I'd have less problems with drivers going 32 bit route than trying 64). I am hoping to salvage my contacts and calendar if at all possible (I have them backed up on an external drive but it's not current about 6 weeks old...I see an Outlook.pst in Windows.old but I cannot open it). I've had to reinstall Office Ultimate 2007 and I have run repair three times. All the Microsoft Windows Ultimate updates are installed. Not sure if this is related but the Office Ultimate Disc 2 will not install properly.

Home Prem To Ultimate - Can I Still Use Home On Another Pc?

I bought retail upgrade vista home premium. Installed on my primary pc and ACTIVATED it. Had odd problems, fixed, then realized I really wanted the ultimate edition. So, bought retail ultimate upgrade. Wiped hard drive, installed XP pro, installed ultimate 64 from there. Now, here is the real question. I now have a perfectly good legal copy of home premium that is not being used. Can I use this copy on a different PC? BTW, it's too late to get a refund from MS, I missed that

Internet Not Working, Ping By DNS Is Working

Mar 23, 2008

My college aged daughter's laptop formerly worked fine but now has odd networking issues which prevent the system from browsing the internet. The system correctly obtains a DHCP address and is able to ping by name, can correctly run AIM and Microsoft Sidebar but still can not connect the IE7.0 Browser to the internet.

I have read a ton of links here within the Network and Sharing group but I haven't seen anything quite like this before. Even though the I know better, I still went through the exercise of testing for DNS issues as well as the often suggested MTU test but there weren't any issues. I have completely shut off the Microsoft Firewall to no avail. The system came with a free trial of Norton Internet Security but after it expired, I loaded a Symantec/Norton Antivirus (NAV 10.1) and did a complete virus scan which produced nothing. I also did a full spyware scan which also didn't locate any serious malware......

No Home Network Available

Mar 23, 2008

1.a wireless laptop running Vista Ultimate. 2.an ethernet wired desktop running Vista Ultimate. 3.a SM8014W-G gateway. The laptop and the desktop can connect to the internet with no poroblems. I can ping the laptop(192.168.0.102) from the desktop. I get "request timed out" when I ping the desktop(192.168.1.2) from the laptop. When I map the network, my gateway icon on each computer shows up as a different address. The laptop gateway icon has 192.168.0.1, whereas the desktop gateway icon has 192.168.1.1. I have double and triple checked all the Vista settings for network discovery, file and printer sharing, they are set correctly on both devices. If I connect the laptop to my desktop through a crossover cable, I do have a network available on which I can share all files and printers without any problem.

I have contacted my ISP (Rogers) numerous times and they told me I had to contact the manufacturer(SMC) as they only provide support for connectivity. I contacted SMC and they told me that Rogers had to provide support as Rogers has all the administrator rights to my gateway. I contacted Rogers and they told me that I had to "use a PRIVATE IP address and not a PUBLIC IP address". Umm, isn't the 192. series the private IP's? Needless to say I don't believe anyone at Rogers knows what they're doing. I am also beginning to believe that my gateway is not designed to create a home network and is just a modem with multiple connection ports. Aside from returning the gateway to rogers for a regular single connection modem and purchasing a router from say best buy, do you all have any ideas? I am only looking to set-up a home network consisting of a laptop and a desktop for file and prineter sharing.

Can't Ping The Home Pc

Jun 11, 2008

I've got a Vista laptop that normally resides within my company domain. I take it home periodically and I'm trying to print to my home computer. The laptop is Vista Ultimate and the home PC is Vista Home Premium. For some reason I can't see the home computer from the laptop. I also can't ping the home PC, but I can connect to the Internet. The laptop is on a WAN connection. If I click on the full map view in Network and Sharing center the laptop can see the home computer there. I assume this has to do with the laptop not being in the same workgroup as the home computer, but I'm unsure on how to work around that.

Upgrading Home Premium To SP1

May 17, 2008

I suddenly notice a lot of references to SP1 for Vista. I have stopped updates on my Vista Home Premium, after it killed my WinMail. I uninstalled upto KB 933928, and disabled updates. It is working fine, but I found AVG offering me AVG 8.0, which refused to install saying my Vista is not updated ( after downloading 80MB twice !! !&*()^%$$). How do I get to SP1? Just install all updates from MS? Will my WinMail survive? Or will I be forced to shift to XP Outlook? There is a lot of flak meant for Vista, but my system is very stable ( touch wood and everything else)

New PC - Home Premium32bit Problem

Dec 31, 2008

I have an issue with my new pc.

I am pretty sure it is cause by something related with the microphone;applications like VOIPs (ventrilo and teamspeak) take a long time to open/edit options and while doing so, the whole PC is frozen up. The same happens with xfire (a game messenger app.- when I edit the options related to microphones)

I am stumped as to the cause because one day it was working, then it wasn't. I've reformatted and reinstalled software and it still occurs.

I've tried two different headsets(one a USB one normal, both requiring no installation cd) to no avail.

Re-Installation Of Home Premium (32 Bit)

Can I do a format of the entire hard disk, reinstall Vista Home Premium (32 bit) again ?? Will it consider my old license or do I need to purchase an additional license ?

If I do a clean installation of the entire OS, what will be the case for Microsoft Office Student Edition 2003 ? Will it consume additional license if I clean install it?

32-bit And 64-bit Distinctions With Home Basic

May 24, 2008

I am confused. I recently purchased a brand new Toshiba Satellite laptop (from a very well known retail vendor). I have Windows Vista Basic running on it. For reasons I won't go into right now (but perhaps in a later post after this), you might say I was forced into doing a little research on my laptop in order to determine whether it is a 32 or 64 bit operating system. Well I found out that my version of Windows Vista Home Basic is 32-bit. However, I am also aware that it is available in a 64-bit version. I also found out that there is such as thing as Windows Vista Starter Edition, which supposedly is the ONLY version of Vista which is NOT 64 bit. If this is true, then why does my System Information tell me that I am running a 32 bit version of Vista Home Basic edition? I do not understand this.

Let me clarify something very quickly here. I am a Computer Networking major at the present time. I do not need someone to speak to me in terms which only someone who doesn't know who to turn on a computer would understand. Lastly, let me also clarify one last thing (hopefully). If there is such as thing as a 64 bit version of Vista Home Basic, then why does my laptop only have the 32 bit version? Is this because I have the "starter" edition, and in order for me to get the better one I would need to actually PAY to upgrade? But why in the world would I need to actually have to PAY in oder to get nothing more than yet a DIFFERENT edition of the exact same OS that I am already running on this laptop of mine? To me, either Windows or Toshiba would have made this a whole lot easier to understand if they would simply have made a DISTINCTION between Vista Starter edition and Vista Home Basic.
