Sep 13, 2009I have just noticed that, in "My computer", icons for drives that are shared have a liitle symbol showing two heads next to the actual drive icon.

Quick Launch Bar Icons Not Showing
Apr 16, 2009My system has been behaving erratically these past few days. I have just installed critical updates for windows vista basic 32bit and at restart, some of my quick launch bars icons were showing blanks. I have tried several system restores without much joy there. Trojan and virus scans have also drawn a blank.

No DVD/CD Drive Showing
Feb 26, 2008i was away for a long time so i do not know exactly what happened but the wife had let me know that the cd she had put in for my son was not playing so i aske her to look at "my computer" to see if the dvd icon was there but no. so i told her to go to device manager and uninstall which she did then restsart the computer. On restart the computer said installing driver for new hardware but it failed..have tried other ways of deleting then reinstalling but still i cannot use the cd/dvd drive..have even gone down the route of purchasning a new dvd writer but that did not work. by the way error code is" Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Feb 12, 2009My friend is having an issue long distance and can't see what's going on but is having a problem His DVD drive is not working. What happens is that it is not showing up under "computer" and will not read any disks of course. What does work is when we go to device manager it is listed, but has a yellow warning under it. The drive did work before, but no longer does. Any ideas? He really needs the help and I did everything I could.

Nov 26, 2009I have several icons/files from my "User" folder showing up in the "Computer" folder (several in duplicate), PLUS numerous blank icons. This seems to have occurred after the Common Files folder became corrupted, after I somewhat riskily decided to power off while Vista was attempting to come out of Sleep mode - it had already taken about 3 mins and I was in a hurry - bad move, I know. That delay appears to have been due to an old version of Online Armor, and has now been fixed (by an update). Chkdsk scanned and (apparently) corrected some errors, and I also ran SFC which said it had corrected some errors but had also found some that it couldn't correct.

Oct 25, 2009I have a few problems at the moment but think most will stem from this. My C: drive is partitioned at 10gb (Disk Managament shows 10gb). Windows Explorer & the driver Properties windows however are only showing 1.00gb capacity & 0mb free.
This may be the cause for me not being able to run downloaded files from the internet & files from an external source (CD Drive). I have tried the usual methods of defreg, disk clean up, resize shadow storge & running Windows Defender (Which is now giving error messages too) & none of these seem to have fixed the problem. There are a few other things I've tried too, but wondered if anyone has come across this before.

Sep 29, 2009CD-rom Drive not showing up or loading CDs? PLEASE READ EVERYTHING BEFORE ANSWERING!!! For some odd reason my cd drive stopped working after doing a system restore, -ive undone the system restores, tried a different one, tried going throug device manager, found the drive and uninstalled it, to be reinstalled by the system, still didnt work The most common solution ive found: ive also tried the regedit solution to delete lower and upper functions but i cant even find a lower or upper key, at one point there was a lower function, i deleted it but nothing happened and now it doesnt even show up, ive tried reinstalling the driver because that was when i first saw the lower, but still nothing
i know my cd rom is not broken or the wiring is not a problem, ive been having a few problems with my laptop lately, so i know its just technical problems, thats why i really want to do a system recovery, to not have to deal with this again for awhile, i finally decided to do do a system recovey to delete all files and start from scratch, but still nothing! There was no installtion cd for my windows vista, so i just did a recovery to reset everything back to the way it was, tried using my recovery discs that i made when i first had the cd, the drive still cant read it, even after i did the recovery
Computer : Im using Windows Vista HP Laptop DV9700 series to be more exact - and im passed the warranty, stupid hp has no technical help for free, called them last week abt why my webcam wouldnt turn on and they wanted to charge me 50 dollars just to help, when i know its not even really broken just a tech glitch, luckily i fixed the problem with the webcam
Flash Drive As Ram Showing 37%
Jan 11, 2009My system physical ram is 4gb and have also added 4gb kingston flash drive as ready boost. My Os is Vista ultimate X 32 Service Pack 1. In my system details it is shown as still 4 gb and not 8 gb even the cpu meter gadget is showing ram as using 37% which used to be the same without the 4gb flash drive ram - The 4 gb flash drive is formatted using NTFS. However when the properties of the flash drive is checked it is showing 3.66gb used and 62.5mb as free space. Is it possible for Vista to show 8gb ram and not 4gb

Jan 23, 2009I am experiencing the same problem as listed in other posts on this topic, but with a twist that is keeping me from resolving the problem. I have a 160gb WD USB external drive of my brother's that I'm trying to save for him, and we're experiencing all of the same symptoms as the other posts on this topic. The drive is automatically recognized when plugged in, drivers auto install, windows correctly identifies the drive and gives full drive name, device manager says it is there and operating properly etc etc, but the drive is not listed in windows explorer as others report. When I try to change the drive letter in disk management as the many other posts suggest, changing the name is not an option for this drive. My only options for the afflicted drive are "New simple volume", "New spanned volume" and "New striped volume" and of course properties. Here are a list of fixes I have tried without success.
1. Tried different USB ports and different USB cable.
2. Tried 4 different machines running Vista Ultimate SP1 (Desktop Core i7 6gb RAM), Vista Basic (Desktop Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM), Vista Home Premium SP1 (Laptop Core 2 Duo 2gb RAM) and XP Home SP3 (Laptop Celeron 512gb RAM)
3. Stopped device with "safely remove hardware", uninstalled through device manager, rebooted with device connected.............
Usb Hard Drive Not Showing In Explorer
Mar 23, 2008I have using a USB hard drive. When it's connected windows vista goes through the usual USB driver installation process without a problem, however the hard drive doesn't show up in explorer. Nor does it show up in computer management/disk management. It does show up in computer management/device manager/disk drives. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem so I can use the hard drive? I don't mind formatting it if necessary.

Dec 30, 2009The C drive is the drive that hold all my programs, the D drive is for extra backup. Yesterday my laptop was showing me an error saying I'm low on memory. I thought that to be odd as I haven't really installed anything. So I uninstalled programs or software that I didn't need or used. Today no matter what I uninstall, and that has been quite a bit, the error keeps popping up saying that I have no memory left. Then it showed me I had 18 MB left and I went back to work. Within a short period of time, I suddenly had no memory left.

For any individual sub folder I can right click and change the customize properties to detail view, but for the C: drive no such option is aviable. How can I change the view back to details?

Aug 8, 2009I have been following the steps in some of the tutorials on how to change a drive's icon. I can get get all of my drives to change to what I want, except for my SD card reader, Drive G. I have restarted the computer several times. The default blue SD icon never changes, unless i remove the card. When i insert the card, it returns of course, but with the default blue SD icon. Any ideas out there?

Feb 12, 2010Hey guys, I recently recieved a new External hard drive. The other day, I changed the icon on it, no problem. I've done it millions of times. Then last night, I formatted the drive because I wanted to get rid of this annoying virtual drive that would also come up when I plugged it in. So, I formatted it and now it seems I can not change the icon. I do all the autorun.inf etc. Here's a screenshot

Also you can see my other drive icons are gone. Ive reset the icon db before and no other icons have this problem but im not sure if I need to reset it again to get the rest back.
But my external hd is top priorite.

Missing Flash Drive Icons In File Open / Save Dialog Box
Dec 10, 2009PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes. There are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives'icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

Mar 23, 2008Somehow I managed to mess up my boot disk by converting it to dynamic. Now whenever I boot, I need to: This will now let that drive boot. I'm running Vista Ultimate with several SATA and USB drives attached - the boot drive is SATA. I also see a strange drive in disk manager (once it's booted) showing as "foreign" a 479mb partition that I don't recognize. I'm tempted to delete it, but won't until I know that it wouldn't hurt anything. Is there anything that I can do to avoid this process every time I reboot?

Dec 31, 2008Bought a Freecom Network Drive (LINK) from PC World today and got it set up and it seemed to be working fine on my Vista computer until I tryed to get it set up on my XP computer. May 18, 2008I just installed an additional 2gb of RAM on my system, but this is not showing in the Task Manager. It iniitally was not showing in either, but after installing SP1 Sys info was updated.

Several days ago I deleted the 'powershell' folder, and, underneath that folder, was surprised to find a dead copy of the 'powershell' folder. The deleted 'powershell' folder was in the recycle bin, and an undeleted dead copy on the desktop. This dead copy cannot be accessed with selection, left-click, or right-click operations - so the 'Properties' info cannot be displayed.........

However, just recently, I noticed that the icons for the computer and recycle bin were gone. Futhermore, the icon for some of the folders on my computer were either blank or a icon of the computer. Some files (ranging from the .dll to .exe) were changed to the computer icon as well. The icons for the floppy drive and my usb also disappeared and are displayed by the icon that represents file that windows does not recognise. How I can restore these icons? Mar 24, 2009So I just traded out my year old Gateway laptop (which stopped working) for a new Dell Inspiron. I've never been particularly impressed with Dell but the Tech Guy at Best Buy assured me the quality of their laptops had improved. Anyway, it came with Windows Vista Home Premium. Since it was a Dell it came loaded with a stardock with mac-like icons instead of desktop icons. I like it so I customized it with the icons for the programs I use most, stared typing up notes for medical school with MS Word, and started downloading music files.
So the other day I notice strangely that the dock had reverted back to the original icons that were present when I first got the computer. Then I noticed all of the files downloaded/saved to the harddrive had disappeared. So I start anew adding files and replacing most of the old ones. Then suddenly yesterday the dock changes again back to how it was...customized and the files that I originally had reappeared but now the files I saved when it changed the first time are gone. So what is going on? Is this some kind of glitch in the OS? Is there something wrong with the actual computer? how get my files back?
Cloning A Drive: Tranfer Entire Drive Incuding All Files And The Operating System From Current IDE HDD To A New SATA Drive
May 2, 2008I am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
