I have a 6 month old Toshiba Satellite laptop with VISTA. It has been little used but the Toshiba TEMPRO alert system is now telling me that drive: D has reached 75% of capacity - only 33gb free on a 149gb drive. I have no idea what this 110 gb has been used for nor can I "find" Drive D.

It keeps telling me my backup failed that i need to free up space, but i don't know what to do or what to delete.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi reformatted my whole c drive and then clean installed vista ultimate onto it and at start i had 268Gb out of 274Gb. now its gone to 243Gb and i've only installed a couple of programs and when i highlight everything in the c drive it says its 7.38GB. I've Defragged it a lot of times and the space keeps on going down.

Win XP Pro had this option also, but, it's default was like vista (pictures showing all users).
I have been able to get the ctrl+alt+del part but instead of the login box I still get pictures.
I have a windows 7 Samsung NC110 with 240gig HD and 1 gig of RAM. I have noticed that my D: is showing that i only have 10.7 gig free of 117GIG. I have checked through the drive and I do not have anything like 106 gig installed on that partition. On my c: i have 46.1 ree of 100GIG.

I keep getting the low disc space on C: error message, and when I click on My Computer, it says I only have 189 MB of free space on the C: drive. However, when I click on the C drive, highlight all the folders, and click Properties, it says I am using 26 GB of space next to "size on disk". I tried to solve this problem about a week ago by moving 30 gigs of music to an external hard drive, but the C drive has filled up again even though I have not added anything to the C drive. I've also tried using disk cleanup and defrag, but that hasn't worked.

The hard drive in question is a 1 Tb hdd and was working fine in XP as were the other HDD's. When I installed Vista, all the other disk's worked fine except for this one. I have gone into Computer Management and it shows the drive as having 859 Gb of unallocated space that I cannot format. I am unable to create a New Simple Volume or any other volume types for this drive.

Currently Vista is showing 70Gb used whereas I can only account for a max of 20Gb and most of that appears to be used by Windows itself. Anyone know why this might be? I have reasonable experience with pc's and regularly clear out temps etc but cannot find this missing space.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi was away for a long time so i do not know exactly what happened but the wife had let me know that the cd she had put in for my son was not playing so i aske her to look at "my computer" to see if the dvd icon was there but no. so i told her to go to device manager and uninstall which she did then restsart the computer. On restart the computer said installing driver for new hardware but it failed..have tried other ways of deleting then reinstalling but still i cannot use the cd/dvd drive..have even gone down the route of purchasning a new dvd writer but that did not work. by the way error code is" Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

What happens is that it is not showing up under "computer" and will not read any disks of course. What does work is when we go to device manager it is listed, but has a yellow warning under it. The drive did work before, but no longer does. Any ideas? He really needs the help and I did everything I could.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a few problems at the moment but think most will stem from this. My C: drive is partitioned at 10gb (Disk Managament shows 10gb). Windows Explorer & the driver Properties windows however are only showing 1.00gb capacity & 0mb free.
This may be the cause for me not being able to run downloaded files from the internet & files from an external source (CD Drive). I have tried the usual methods of defreg, disk clean up, resize shadow storge & running Windows Defender (Which is now giving error messages too) & none of these seem to have fixed the problem. There are a few other things I've tried too, but wondered if anyone has come across this before.

i know my cd rom is not broken or the wiring is not a problem, ive been having a few problems with my laptop lately, so i know its just technical problems, thats why i really want to do a system recovery, to not have to deal with this again for awhile, i finally decided to do do a system recovey to delete all files and start from scratch, but still nothing! There was no installtion cd for my windows vista, so i just did a recovery to reset everything back to the way it was, tried using my recovery discs that i made when i first had the cd, the drive still cant read it, even after i did the recovery

My system physical ram is 4gb and have also added 4gb kingston flash drive as ready boost. My Os is Vista ultimate X 32 Service Pack 1. In my system details it is shown as still 4 gb and not 8 gb even the cpu meter gadget is showing ram as using 37% which used to be the same without the 4gb flash drive ram - The 4 gb flash drive is formatted using NTFS. However when the properties of the flash drive is checked it is showing 3.66gb used and 62.5mb as free space. Is it possible for Vista to show 8gb ram and not 4gb

View 9 Replies View Relatedlast week i was recoding some video's using Nero's Recode program (sidenote worked great) but now my 100 gig laptop on has 2 gigs of space left from the original 60 gigs free space. where did it go?? the video files have been deleted, i've used the disc clean-up program to remove the temp files and used the registry to enable Pagefiles removeal from another post of this forum. that clean up some on the space i now have 20gigs free space but i still am missing 40 more gigs that i have before i starting the recodeing.
in my disk de-fragmenter is shows me that i have a huge "yellow" portion of paging files still left and by just guessing it should be that extra 40 gigs just by seeing the size of the "yellow" bar.
how do i get rid of these "paging files" and how do i reclaim my lost space?
So i just got my laptop its a compaq presario and it came with 138gigs. Initially it came with around 119gigs and after awhile i started to see that it started to decrease like around a gig aday or when i left it on to long. I took it in and geek squad and they said i had a virus but i restored it and nothing on my trendmirco has detected anything. I run proccess explorer and i cant see anything weird that is poping up using alot of CPU and now after i restored it twice i think its slowly doing it again but i heard that Vista uses alot of memory stored in cache called superfetch is this the reason why i see the decrease when im doing something on the system or what is serverpack 2 the guy kept telling me that this could be the case also. After Vista crashed, from not enough space on the hard drive ( Started up then crashed once it got to the Windows loading screen with auroa picture, by crash i mean self restart) So next i tried to reinstall vista via DVD command prompt, using Partdisk format C: took about 20 mins and i noticed it was still on 2% so i thought it had frozen so i closed it down to just do a Quick format, format C:.......
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have had this Pavillion dv6305tx laptop just 2 months and after a short while the disc almost full message popped up, it is a 160gb HDD with vista ultimate 64 bit os. Strange because I had not installed any new programs. I phoned the HP line (India) and was told to re format the HDD. This I did but now I have the same message again. I have not istalled anything and the add/remove programs tells me I have less than 2gb of programs installed. The HDD seems to be filling up in its own and I cannot work it out. I think it is a setting in vista but don't know wher to start. The problem is not with the recovery partition D.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing the same problem as listed in other posts on this topic, but with a twist that is keeping me from resolving the problem. I have a 160gb WD USB external drive of my brother's that I'm trying to save for him, and we're experiencing all of the same symptoms as the other posts on this topic. The drive is automatically recognized when plugged in, drivers auto install, windows correctly identifies the drive and gives full drive name, device manager says it is there and operating properly etc etc, but the drive is not listed in windows explorer as others report. When I try to change the drive letter in disk management as the many other posts suggest, changing the name is not an option for this drive. My only options for the afflicted drive are "New simple volume", "New spanned volume" and "New striped volume" and of course properties. Here are a list of fixes I have tried without success.
1. Tried different USB ports and different USB cable.
2. Tried 4 different machines running Vista Ultimate SP1 (Desktop Core i7 6gb RAM), Vista Basic (Desktop Core 2 Duo, 4gb RAM), Vista Home Premium SP1 (Laptop Core 2 Duo 2gb RAM) and XP Home SP3 (Laptop Celeron 512gb RAM)
3. Stopped device with "safely remove hardware", uninstalled through device manager, rebooted with device connected.............
I have using a USB hard drive. When it's connected windows vista goes through the usual USB driver installation process without a problem, however the hard drive doesn't show up in explorer. Nor does it show up in computer management/disk management. It does show up in computer management/device manager/disk drives. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem so I can use the hard drive? I don't mind formatting it if necessary.

first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave
up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back
up, it says "last backup failed".
I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the
D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in
the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start
from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little
RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!
I am completely computer deficient and I have no idea about anything! I'd
be really grateful if someone could give me a clue (in Vista Backup for
Dummies terms) as to what's happening here and how I can FINALLY back up my
laptop, and maybe even begin to love it like I should!!
Since I installed SP2 on the 22nd of July, I am losing 1-2G of space from my hard drive. I have plenty of space so it's not a really bad problem, just irritating. I started out with 280G free of 338. When I installed SP2 it went down to about 260. Last night I was down to 239 and this morning it's 237. It usually happens overnight and I don't know where to being looking. Would it be restore point's or system check points? Other than that the computer is working fine..

Drive 0 has Vista Business installed. I'm dual booting Server 2008 Standard which is on Drive 1.
I want to increase the size of Drive 1. What is the best way to do this?
I was thinking I could boot in Vista (Drive 0) and make a full backup of Drive 1. Upgrade Drive 1 to the large disk and then restore Drive 1 from backup. What other method can I use?

View 5 Replies View RelatedSince a couple months ago, roughly July of last year, I've been losing disk space on my C drive even when I haven't downloaded a single byte or installed any programs. Though this might sound crazy, I've looked for viruses like a detective, in hopes that it's what's causing this. But I don't have a virus, and I'm down to 16.4 GB out of a 232 GB HDD. I'm going crazy, because since then, I've had a 32 GB average of anything on that drive, and I had a couple games and programs on there even with that in there. In 3 weeks, I've been losing at least 3 GB.
-Deleting every restore point/shadow copy except the most recent
-Overlooked the winsxs folder, it's only 8.35 GB, I can live with that.
-Downloaded TreeSize, found that a folder called [Files], taking up 201,663 MB: should I delete this file? The owner is called 'TrustedInstaller' according to TreeSize.
I'm new to Vista so have no idea whats going on. I've partitioned by data to Drive M so that leaves C: to the OS and application programs. I'd expect about 5Gb to be OK for that but on the Partition that is C: 136Gb wide, I'm gobsmacked to find that 51Gb is in use and only 89Gb left free?
