I have a Compaq Presario laptop. my C hard drive is 60gb with it half full. that is not problem but my other drive. my D drive is 5gb and it only has 72.1mb left on it does anybody know a way to get space back? anybody know what I can do to stop it going down? i defragment the computer every month. i delete shadow copies i did consider compressing the folder but i read somewhere that is a bad idea what should I do to get the space back?
getting Vista to work with my Garmin etrex and Memorymap. I have bought a new cable because it came with a disk to ensure I had the correct driver, still doesn't work. The reason I have come to this site is my computer presented me with a choice, it said that I should back up my hard drive, to ensure that I wouldn't lose any info in the event of a breakdown. I clicked yes and was told after a time that there was not enough disk space. When I looked at my hard drive page, the recovery drive (E) is full and now in red!
I have tried and tried to back up my files in my recovery partiton for several weeks now every week I back up but I keep getting this ballon that the by disk is full and never freeing any space I can access my recovery to manually remve them every back is sucessfull.
As I have been writing on here before. I am trying to clean it up and get some more space. How in the world do you see what is on there???? I have been all over my computer and deleted a lot of junk files, but not gaining much space back. What is on this thing----where is the list of what is there???
I just used Windows Vista to back up my drive to an external drive. It said the backup was successful but when I went to safely remove hardware, I got this message: " Windows can't stop your Generic volume device because it is in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again later. "I made sure everything was closed, checked with Task Manager and tried again. Same message. After 20 minutes, I finally just disconnected it.
last week i was recoding some video's using Nero's Recode program (sidenote worked great) but now my 100 gig laptop on has 2 gigs of space left from the original 60 gigs free space. where did it go?? the video files have been deleted, i've used the disc clean-up program to remove the temp files and used the registry to enable Pagefiles removeal from another post of this forum. that clean up some on the space i now have 20gigs free space but i still am missing 40 more gigs that i have before i starting the recodeing.
in my disk de-fragmenter is shows me that i have a huge "yellow" portion of paging files still left and by just guessing it should be that extra 40 gigs just by seeing the size of the "yellow" bar.
how do i get rid of these "paging files" and how do i reclaim my lost space?
So i just got my laptop its a compaq presario and it came with 138gigs. Initially it came with around 119gigs and after awhile i started to see that it started to decrease like around a gig aday or when i left it on to long. I took it in and geek squad and they said i had a virus but i restored it and nothing on my trendmirco has detected anything. I run proccess explorer and i cant see anything weird that is poping up using alot of CPU and now after i restored it twice i think its slowly doing it again but i heard that Vista uses alot of memory stored in cache called superfetch is this the reason why i see the decrease when im doing something on the system or what is serverpack 2 the guy kept telling me that this could be the case also. Please help im trying to understand all of this
my C drive is 160g with a 12 gig partition and 2x 9g partitions, that are now cleared. After Vista crashed, from not enough space on the hard drive ( Started up then crashed once it got to the Windows loading screen with auroa picture, by crash i mean self restart) So next i tried to reinstall vista via DVD command prompt, using Partdisk format C: took about 20 mins and i noticed it was still on 2% so i thought it had frozen so i closed it down to just do a Quick format, format C:.......
I have had this Pavillion dv6305tx laptop just 2 months and after a short while the disc almost full message popped up, it is a 160gb HDD with vista ultimate 64 bit os. Strange because I had not installed any new programs. I phoned the HP line (India) and was told to re format the HDD. This I did but now I have the same message again. I have not istalled anything and the add/remove programs tells me I have less than 2gb of programs installed. The HDD seems to be filling up in its own and I cannot work it out. I think it is a setting in vista but don't know wher to start. The problem is not with the recovery partition D.
when i try to install software it comes up with (drive)not enough disk space..when i have 30gb left.. when i attempt to create a restore point twice 1st came up with 0x80070070 and 2nd was. when i load a picture it says not enough picture please close some apps/free up disk space. when i uninstall a software it says an error occured while writing installation information to disk.check to make sure enough disk space is available, and click retry or cancel end the.. my computer has 1 harddrive split into C and D partitions...its an ACER 57357 with 4gb ram,2.16ghz-667mhz fsb-1mb l2 cache, 320gb harddrive, 4500m intergrated graphics
I've been trying to back up my laptop since I bought it last year, but the first time I did it, it said "backup failed" (I didn't look at why, just gave up) and since then, every week when it does its sad little attempt to back up, it says "last backup failed".
I finally decided to give it another crack tonight, but when I looked at the D drive, it said that I only had 1.28GB free of just over 5GB. I looked in the file to see if there was anything I could get rid of so I could start from scratch, but apparently there's nothing in there apart from the little RECOVERY file (87kb) which it says I shouldn't touch, so I'm not going to!
I am completely computer deficient and I have no idea about anything! I'd be really grateful if someone could give me a clue (in Vista Backup for Dummies terms) as to what's happening here and how I can FINALLY back up my laptop, and maybe even begin to love it like I should!!
Since I installed SP2 on the 22nd of July, I am losing 1-2G of space from my hard drive. I have plenty of space so it's not a really bad problem, just irritating. I started out with 280G free of 338. When I installed SP2 it went down to about 260. Last night I was down to 239 and this morning it's 237. It usually happens overnight and I don't know where to being looking. Would it be restore point's or system check points? Other than that the computer is working fine..
Drive 0 has Vista Business installed. I'm dual booting Server 2008 Standard which is on Drive 1.
I want to increase the size of Drive 1. What is the best way to do this?
I was thinking I could boot in Vista (Drive 0) and make a full backup of Drive 1. Upgrade Drive 1 to the large disk and then restore Drive 1 from backup. What other method can I use?
Since a couple months ago, roughly July of last year, I've been losing disk space on my C drive even when I haven't downloaded a single byte or installed any programs. Though this might sound crazy, I've looked for viruses like a detective, in hopes that it's what's causing this. But I don't have a virus, and I'm down to 16.4 GB out of a 232 GB HDD. I'm going crazy, because since then, I've had a 32 GB average of anything on that drive, and I had a couple games and programs on there even with that in there. In 3 weeks, I've been losing at least 3 GB.
-Deleting every restore point/shadow copy except the most recent -Overlooked the winsxs folder, it's only 8.35 GB, I can live with that. -Downloaded TreeSize, found that a folder called [Files], taking up 201,663 MB: should I delete this file? The owner is called 'TrustedInstaller' according to TreeSize.
I'm new to Vista so have no idea whats going on. I've partitioned by data to Drive M so that leaves C: to the OS and application programs. I'd expect about 5Gb to be OK for that but on the Partition that is C: 136Gb wide, I'm gobsmacked to find that 51Gb is in use and only 89Gb left free?
I currently own a HP Pavilion dv9000 with Vista Ultimate , memory 2.00GB: Processor: Intel Core, T7200 @ 2.00GHz 2.00GHz my system type is 64 Bits and 32 Bits. My problem is Hard drive space see attachment pic below. For some odd reason my C drive is full but if you look at my D drive it's free is their anyway to use this drive?
I have a 300 gig external drive that I use for backups. When I list the folders on the drive and their size, I come up with just under a 100 gigs of used space. The drive shows that I have approx 23 gigs of space left before the drive is full. So here is the question, which one of you guys has my other 170 gigs of storage space.......
My backup drive D in Windows Vista is full up and I can't seem to be able to empty it or allocate more space to it. It only has 9.99GB of space allocated to it and my computer is now complaining that it can't backup. Does anyone know how to allocate more space to it, or should I just delete everything on it?
I keep getting a message flash up on my screen saying I have almost no space left on my Vista (C drive. In the 'Computer' section it says I have 4.40 GB free out of 116 GB and the whole bar is coloured red (which I assume means critical!) I really have no idea why I would be using so much space, I don't really download anything, I have programmes such as Spotify and Itunes but even they don't get used often. I got rid of things like Google Earth but it's made no difference. I have a Toshiba Laptop and I seem to remember that almost half the space was taken up the first day I took it home, could it be that Toshiba have filled it with unnecessary programmes?!
I am not sure why but for some reason my c drive is displaying incorrect information. When I view the total space for C: from "My Computer" it displays 21.3 GB of 133GB used. However, when I go into my c drive select all files and folders, right click and select properties, the most space being used in C is 30GB. For some reason my system restores have all been lost. I do not have a vista install disk, but I do have the factory restore that I made upon purchase of my laptop.
I have a 6 month old Toshiba Satellite laptop with VISTA. It has been little used but the Toshiba TEMPRO alert system is now telling me that drive: D has reached 75% of capacity - only 33gb free on a 149gb drive. I have no idea what this 110 gb has been used for nor can I "find" Drive D.
I have a 120 GB hd on my lenovo laptop with windows vista. the SW_Preload says 13.8 GB free of 104 GB. However, when I check the size of each of my folders/files within my C drive, it only adds up to barely 20 GB. I'm wondering what could be causing this discrepency? The folders for example are "users", Windows, Program Files, etc.
When you install Windows XP it always leaves at least 8MB of unallocated space. I seem to remember that it had a possible functional use. Do I need to do the same in Vista Home Premium?
ive just got a new machine running ultimate x64, the main hard drive is a sata drive no problems with this. ive also got a samsung hd400ld ata (400 gb). ive put this in the machine and reformatted it (ntfs) its done this ok but now its showing one partition and its saying that its only 31.50 gb, i would epect to lose some space but not 360gb.
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1. I'm trying to add a new volume (as I think they're called) from unallocated space on my hard drive. However, when I try to do so, it tells me at the end that it's unable to do so as it's hit the max number of partitions. It all came preinstalled from Dell, and there are 4 partitions:No letter - really small, has the tag "EISA configuration" No letter, no tags. Possibly recovery software. Drive C: - Vista drive Drive D: - backup drive How can I add another partition?
I do weekly full backups to an 300 GB external USB hard drive with the built-in Windows Vista backup program. On my entre C: drive I've only used about 100 GB, and this of course includes both the OS, apps, and user data files. I just looked at the J: backup drive in Windows Explorer and the pie chart of Properties is showing the Used Space as 200 GB which really surprises me. I don't get this. On this backup drive there's only a single parent folder called RICK. The Properties of this folder shows only 21 GB of files. Yet Properties of the drive itself shows a pie chart of 200 GB Used Space.
Something is taking up a lot of extra space on the backup drive and I'm not sure what it is. I did a Disk Cleanup which found a Recycle Bin that hadn't been emptied out, but that only released about 15 GB. If this is any clue: before doing each full backup I manually delete the previous week's backup from the hard drive.
So my hard drive was originally like 200 GB or something, but of course the operating system took up about 25 gigs, so it says it's out of 174 GB. It currently says I have 102 GB free. However, I added up everything on my computer, and it says I've used only 45 gigs. That means I should have 129 gigs left. I know all about the system restore thing and I've deleted "all but the most recent" like 80 times in the past day lol, but it doesn't do anything. I've run CC Cleaner and Defraggler and everything. So I'm wondering where the 27 or so gigs I should have is and what I can do to get them back.
