Computer Keeps Locking, Freezing, Etc
Apr 26, 2009
Allow me to backtrack. A bit over a month ago, my video card started to show some pretty obvious signs of nearing demise. Graphical glitches in video games, random screen black-outs, and even more random total computer lock ups--but only when playing games. So, I replaced it. All was well. Until a couple of weeks ago. Now, all I'm getting is the lock-ups. These stopped when I first replaced the card, and only recently started happening. These locks are...different, though. For starters, they happen whether I'm playing a game or not. I don't have to be doing anything even remotely graphically intensive. Just staring at my desktop after startup will occasionally freeze. That said, it happens most often while I am playing games--but a counter to that would be that most of the time I'm on my computer, I'm doing that. So it's not exactly a reliable conclusion.
Something else strange about these freezes is that...they usually come to a slow halt, rather than slamming on the breaks. It's most noticeable when I'm typing. Letters will show up a split second late and within a few seconds, the computer is a brick until I manually reboot it. I've tried a few things. The video card is seated properly, the drivers are up to date. I cleaned out what little dust was in my computer. I defragmented. I tried to reinstall Vista. Tried to. I pop the disk in and it does its thing for what feels like forever, only to give me an error message and revert my system back to before it started. Honestly, I didn't write the error down though I know I should have. It was dawn, and I was too busy slamming my head against my desk.

I have an HP xw9400 Workstation with Vista Business x64 SP1. Every day or other day the entire system just locks up, no screen of death, just everything is frozen. When it freezes I cannot move the mouse, use the keyboard, I do not see any movement from any taskbar or gadget bar icons so I know the system is completely locked up and its not just a mouse/keyboard issue. I also removed the wireless mouse/keyboard and used USB and PS2 connect mouse/keybard and still freezing. I upgraded the BIOS. Made sure I have all the latest Windows Updates Upgraded all the drivers I can think of Upgraded the SAS controller firmware Made sure Kaspersky is always running and up to date (anti virus/firewall enable) Uninstalled any software I did not think is needed. Made sure the PC is connected to a UPS and that the UPS is functioning well...........

The message I got that it would revert the computer to where it was. I noticed all of my settings weren't the same as before. This was yerterday morning & the computer locked up for the first time last night. could this be the problem or could it possibly be something else? I,ve tried System Restore at startup & safe mode, but it won't stay running long enough.

My friend bought a new computer a few months ago that came with Vista installed. It also came with a bunch of other programs (bloatware) installed. I uninstalled all the stuff she didn't want, which included Norton AV, and replaced that particular program with AntiVir, which I have used and liked for years. She doesn't use the computer for much except playing pre-installed card games and reading email, and she didn't install anything except her Kodak printer. I installed the Comodo firewall, but that didn't work well for her, so when Zone Alarm released a Vista-compatible version, I uninstalled Comodo and installed ZA.
She began telling me the computer was freezing up from time to time. Then it began freezing up regularly. Now it is freezing up so badly that she can't even play her games. I reviewed the event log and found errors involving Windows Error Reporting service, and warnings about the printer. I turned off the error reporting and unplugged the printer. The problem persisted..............

just curious why it locks, and if it can be changed.
- If I turn on screensaver, and choose 'On resume, display logon screen'
- If I turn it off again, it locks my computer after the time set in screensaver. Even though it's turned off.

I've recentely bought a Qnap TS-109 NAS Sever. I am trying to copy all my bideo and music files over to it, however, as soon as I sart a transfer (either throught windows explorer or FTP) my computer slows to a crawl. Basically videos and music become juddery, my mouse and keyboard become very slow etc. Also I only seem to get about 3.5 MBPS when transfering files. Im on a 100mbps lan, my maths says that says thats a maximum of 12.5 MBPS, I know there are overheads but it should still be faster? Infact streming videos from the NAS server to my computer is worse that streaming them via my 54mbps wireless connection to my PS3. Is there something wrong with my setup? I am using two devolo highspeed home plugs between my pc and router, although my pc still says its connected at 100mbps and the homeplugs say they are linked at 100mbps.

My Vista home premium automatically locks after a short time. This is super annoying. I want to turn it off. My screen saver used to come on, but now it locks instead. I am using the Webshots screen saver, and it does not have anything on it for setting a password, so I cannot set that, as was suggested in another forum. Isn't there some way to simply tell windows to NOT automatically lock my computer, EVER?

Ok, my computer is fairly new, about 2 1/2 weeks old. And past week or so, I been experiencing random and sudden freezing. The first time it happened was when I was playing BF2. Another time when it happened was when I was browsing the web and listen to iTunes. So far, my computer froze about 6 times. I know it froze because there is a repeating sound of either my game or the songs. And also the Num Lock light won't turn off or on and the mouse pointer is frozen. Hodling CTRL+ALT+Delete does not respond. Just now, while browsing this forum using the key "Page Down", it froze. It's like any sudden movement will freeze my computer.

Recently purchased a Dell Studio 540, I'm running Vista Home Premium 64bit. All was good until i tried to install my wireless adapter (D-Link). System runs ok but then freezes up about 5mins after initial start up. I can take the d-Link adapter out and i don't have this problem so I was thinking the D-link was causing all the problems. I went and purchased an Edimax EW-7728ln wireless PCI Adapter. Installed but I'm still having the same problem, freezes up after initial start up

My computer has been working fine for about a year and a half, then suddenly, this morning my computer starts freezing in a number of different scenarios. here we go... watching movies,,using the internet explorer?,loading savegames for pretty much any game my animated screen saver,,loading windows media player (sometimes it can manage it),any activity that seems to require even a little bit of graphics grunt. What happens in all situations is that the picture freezes and appears to go from 32 bit colour to like 256 colours, if there is sounds that freezes a few seconds later, and then stutters. Occassionaly the screen turns off or there is a blue screen with the windows error message, however it only stays for a few seconds and has considerable image noise.
this is what i have tested/tried so far
virus/spyware >>>> fine
graphics card fan >>>>> fine
system restore >>>>> did nothing
updated graphics drivers >>>> did nothing
I think that my graphics card has died, but I don't think this explains why internet explorer causes freezes or why the sound freezes.

the problem is what I start up Combat Arms, I get a brief period of everything on my computer freezing. When I try to goto options if I click any tap or press OK I get a period where my computer just freezes for about 10 mins. I can't Ctrl+Alt+Del or alt+f4 out of it. This also happens when I start a game, not join one but when the actually gameplay starts, and I also get it when die and respawn for about 1-2 mins.

Ok so I built the machine that I am using right now (see sig for details) close to the beginning of the year. Every once and a while (including the first day I used it) it would do this hard lock up sort of thing. Basically everything would be going ok and then all of a sudden the computer would completely freeze, even the keyboard and mouse would freeze. When I hit ctrl+alt+del, the circle on the loading cursor goes for like half a second and then freezes. The only thing I can do is a hard reboot. Up until recently, the problem had been happening sporadically and it didn't really bother me that much, so I didn't even bother troubleshooting it or anything like that. In the last week (even before vista sp2), it has just been locking up uncontrollably. I log into windows and within 5 minutes it has locked up again.
Here are some things that aren't mentioned in the computer build:
-I'm using a 500gb western digital mybook external hard drive and sometimes when i turn off the computer, the blue light on the hard drive stays on (the usb ports are still sending power, maybe it's overspinning or drawing too much power and causing windows to lock up but even without the hard drive plugged in it still freezes...just a thought though)
-I'm using an EDIMAX wireless card adapter (can't hard wire to where I am in the house) and I've heard that the card has issues with vista 64-bit so this is my best lead on the problem right now...the card is EDIMAX EW-7128g
-I am currently running a memory test to check for bad RAM but the test has been stuck at 21% on the first pass (10% overall) for about an hour and a half now ...

I Recently put together a new cpu, using Vista Home Premium 64-Bit. But for some reason the system keeps randomly locking up in 10-20 min intervals that I have to restart the system every time. Also when I try to install Vista 64 bit SP1 at the end of installation it tells me there is an internal error. Is this simply a case of bad Ram or something more?? Here is the system specs.

how I can keep my laptop from automatically locking itself when ever my screen saver goes up. Basically, what I'm trying to make my computer do is simple. My brother has an HP laptop (I have a Toshiba), when he opens up his laptop or restarts it from sleep mode or what ever, it automatically loads onto the desktop. For me, it loads up the choose-a-user page, in which there is only one user, and it claims it is "locked".
I have tried a few different things so far, I went to my screen saver settings, unchecked "On resume, display logon screen", then I tried going to the netplwiz program from the start menu, disabled "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer.", hit apply, and since I don't have a password on my computer, and I hit OK. Vista even made me log off and back in to change this setting. And it is still locking the computer every time it goes into sleep or the laptop is closed.

I'm having some trouble trying to get my PC to lock up when it comes out of "sleep" mode. It also does not go into the Screen Saver anymore it just goes straight to "turn off display" and then it doesnt lock up the PC when it "wakes up". I am guessing this is an interface problem or maybe a registry problem.

I recently built a new computer and bought the Vista Ultimate upgrade for it. I'm running Vista Ultimate x64. My system is:Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz 2x Geforce 8800 GTS in SLI Asus P532N-SLI motherboard 4GB Corsair DDR2 800MHz RAM 2x 150gb WD SE16 SATA drives running in RAID 0 Striped Seemingly out of nowhere, system services have stopped working. I have all kinds of problems:Can't open control panel Can't access my computer 'properties' (where it would show all the specs, allow me to change product key, etc) Can't access the "Personalize" menu from my desktop The "Aero" theme is unavaliable Can't access Windows Update Can't access Windows Ultimate Extras and many other system operations are blocked Can't access my 'installed updates' to even attempt to rollback any updates that may have caused this. I know what comes to mind immediately: Invalid product key, so the system is locking down. The only problem is, my product key ISN'T invalid and I only encountered this problem recently.
Yes, Software Licensing service is running. All of my NVIDIA FORCEWARE drivers are up to date.I have all hotfixes that apply to my computer. I used System Restore to as far back as possible to no avail. I tried booting from the Windows DVD and repairing from there, with no luck. I do have the Vista SP1 RC installed, which could be the issue, but it was working fine with it installed for the past week. And I can't uninstall it even if I wanted to because I can't access the installed updates. Sorry for the long post, but hopefully you guys get the idea, or anyone who is willing to help anyway. I'd like to fix this problem WITHOUT having to format and do a clean install if possible, that's the main reason I'm posting here. Because I know I can fix it with a clean install.

The install of Vista has been nothing short of a nightmare..the OS keeps locking up at random intervals and reducing me to tears. I can't even seem to get the drivers installed without issues. I have tried to do most from safe mode to no avail. The next step was to remove all but 2 g of RAM and one of the video cards but things are still locking up for no apparant reason. Sometimes the install hung on "expanding Files" sometimes it would make it through that only to hang at the splash screen or once the os had booted up. We ten tested all the RAM with a ram test and everything was fine. Im at my wit's end here as I have pulled everything out to make it as bare bones as possible.
One thought from a friend was that the raid drivers may be causing an issue as this has been known to happen on intel mobos. Although I thought I had the Raid driver off anyway as Im not doing an array....yet.

I have searched this newsgroup (as well as Google) and have found many items which are similar to this situation, but nothing quite exactly the same.
In my office I have 9 of the exact same computer (Dell Optiplex 755),all with the exact same software setup (Vista Enterprise 32bit).This issue is happening on only 1 of the computers (which leads me to believe that this is NOT a driver problem).
The user has her computer set to require a password when the screensaver is activated (normal windows screen saver, not some 3rd party program).
When the screen saver is activated, it locks the computer and the monitor goes black. All is well.
When she is ready to unlock it, she hits alt-cntl-del. 7 out of 8 times, the screen comes back to the logon screen where she can type in her password, and unlock the computer. But 1 time out of 8, the monitor will be totally black except for the arrow for the cursor.
She can move the mouse around fine (indicating the computer itself is ot toasterized).
Things we have tried:
* about 1/2 the time, unplugging the video plug from the computer and
plugging it back in will restore the picture (note that simply turning
the monitor off then back on *never* works).
* typing her password on the black screen will sometimes work (my guess
is that the prompt is in the right place)
Other than this issue, the computer works fine (meaning there aren't
other symptoms that indicate other problems).

I bought a new lappy recently and was dismayed that it had to come with vista and I was not allowed to dual boot or anything or else void my warente. However that is not what I am here to rant about, ok I got it a month ago, it worked fine for the first 2 weeks then BAM It began freezing, and I mean total system lock up hard restart etc etc . If I leave it for half an hour or so it eventually goes black and displays an error "Login process has failed to create the security options dialog" I've been looking at solutions and calling tech support and all I've gotten is
1) reformat everything and reinstall Vista. - Did not help 1 iota, the problem came back a week later.
2) uninstall Asus live updates - done and no effect
3) press Ctrl + Alt + Del and fix - Not going to work its freezing just after startup (or during) and nothing responds other then force restart.

About two years ago I bought a Vista HP laptop. Recently when I went on vacation with my children the snow storm holed us up in the hotel with nothing to do. So they used my laptop alot. After this, my laptop did not work properly. About 1 minute after I turn it on it will freeze completely. After about ten minutes it will unfreeze but proceed to execute all of the clicks I made during the time it was frozen. I am at about an intermediate stage when it comes to computers.

I have an XPS 720 H2C that up until 2 nights ago, was running fine. Then all of a sudden, my OS (Vista Ultimate) started freezing after about 10 minutes. I am unable to do anything when this happens apart from press the power off button.
I haven't installed anything new.
I haven't updated anything.
I haven't done anything unusual.
I have Norton Antivirus running in the background etc
The system is a Quad Core 2.93ghz, 4g ram (although Vista only allows 3...bah) and it's a 32 bit OS. I have a Zotac 1gb GTX 285 Amp GFX card, a Blu-Ray drive and a Liteon DVD DL RW and a SoundBlaster X-Fi card. So no changes. Nothing. The system has crapped out on me. I have rolled back to 2 previous save points (first one made no difference) and I have also installed the latest updates to try and fix it. Nada. Still crashing. I now throw myself at your mercy and hope you don't tell me to get a Mac/Linux - tell me my OS is lame, that Dell is overpriced crap (I got my second hand dirt cheap).

A few weeks ago my computer died whilst playing online poker. Got the BSOD followed by computer refusing to boot at all. In the end I got it to boot up from the cd drive to run memtest86 and windows memory diagnostic to check my 2gb RAM. Sure enough both of these scans found errors and so today I opened the machine up! Took out 1gb or stick of RAM, and left the other 1gb in the machine. I then ran both memory tests again and this time no errors were found! So in my mind I had removed the faulty RAM and maybe vista would start for the first time in weeks! It did start to my relief and it seemed to be running ok. Then all of a sudden while browsing the net, the computer just froze. Now it keeps freezing often and randomly, sometimes even just by moving the mouse!
One bit of good news is that it is JUST freezing and no longer giving me various BSODs. Does it keep freezing because 1gb of ram is not enough? Another interesting thing is that when the system died on me 2 weeks back I was playing online poker and was always wondering if this caused the problem. Then today I ran a virus scan and it was scanning fine until it came to scanning one file which froze the scan and computer. The file was the following - c:Program filesfull tilt pokergraphics... widget.Tournamentinfo.PNG. Obviously this file is from the same site I was playing poker on. Does that mean anything or am I reading too much into it? Main thing. Is 1gb of RAM enough to run Vista without freezing randomly all the time? I would have thought it was, but I'm not that clued up!

I have tried all the recommended solutions, Restore to a time when it wasn't happening, got rid of McAfee Software, had Dell technicians remote in for several hours 2x, had a friend remote in to look for conflicting software and no one anywhere can find the problem. Ditto on freeze ups, opening e-mail, writing a word doc, editing a pic, anything thing, anytime. o time frames but it always happens once a session. I run Webroot virus/software, uninstalled it and still had freeze ups. Dell is confounded. Sometimes get blue screen, sometimes not.

I just recieved my new Dell with Vista 64-Bit Home Premium on Friday (the 8th) and since the initial start-up, I can be doing anything (web surfing, viewing task manager, any program) and without any warning the program just stops responding. In most cases I can't minimize or close the program and clicking Start - Restart even does not respond. The 'only' way to end this and restart the computer is by actually unplugging the power cable.
Viweing the Event Viewer I see that within 2 days, I have 83 Error messages listed under Windows Logs - Applications (These are the red buttons under the LEVEL column). All updates are installed. I have to write this quickly before the bugger freezes up again.

I recently purchased a new computer. It has been plagued by freezing and crashing ever since i bought it. (just froze) I also have unfrequently had the (just froze) "nvlddmkm display driver has stopped working and has recovered" message. Could that account for the frequent freezing. The thing is that it is not accompanied by a black or blue screen.
This freezing usually occurs during IE7 opperations, but also occurs while playing games and fiddling with gadgets. (just froze) I have 2gb and wondered if this could be the problem - i seem to remeber reading somewhere that when you have 2gb or + it frequently freezes.
