Cannot Save WEP Network Security Key
Jan 14, 2010
My WEP Network Security Key is not being saved in the Wireless Network Properties Screen Security tab. A couple of nights ago I used a motel wireless connection and I had to change some settings to make that work. Now I have changed everything back to my home router settings, the home connection is now fine, but I have to enter the home router Key every time I boot up even though I click on OK on the Wireless Network Properties screen Security tab. Is a configuration file holding previous, incorrect information that loads the wrong key on bootup?

I have a Toshiba laptop that is connected to a wireless network in my home. My concern is security for this computer. I have been reading alot of articles on the internet concerning security, and most suggest several things, one being encryption, The others are enabeling static ip address and wireless mac address filtering. I contacted Verizon and asked them to help me secure this connection to my laptop and they enabled WEP and assigned a key. I then asked about the other two options mentioned above and they said all i needed was WEP enabled. Finally my question: Is that enough?

I have a wireless network in my home. I just purchased a Sony laptop with Vista Home business installed. When I try to get in Internet Explorer, many times I am unable. My network security key seems to always default to another code and I have to retype mine in in order to get on the internet. What can I do to have my key code be permanent?

Something has changed in my Home Premium system such that I can no longer save to the desktop! When I try, I get an error message stating " You don't have permission to save in this location." I do not recall changing ANY permissions to prevent this. I did have a problem installing Office Home 2007 and maybe that caused a change. Where do I need to go to set the permission back to allow me to save to the desktop?

I am having some serious problems connecting to my wireless router. I have wpa-personal security and I bring my laptop from my work to home. The problem is everytime I bring it home it takes AT LEAST 20 times to connect to my wireless router. Everytime it comes back "your security key is incorrect", but it is NOT.
I am also not mistaking my network for another.
However if I boot up the laptop and let it sit by itself for about 30 minutes, it will just connect fine.
I have 2 other laptops that connect fine to the router with no problems.
Device info
Router: SMC Draft 11n Wireless 4-port SMCWBR14-N
Wireless card: Broadcom 802.11n (driver version 4.82.28.56)
I am thinking that Vista is sending the network key in a different version or something that makes my router hesitate?.html

My computer is running the concistency check. It's at stage 3 and when it's almost complete it's starts to "replace invalid security Id with default security id for file ******" it's been doing this for a while now and I was wondering what I can do to speed it up. It's currently at 170000, and if I try to restart the computer the login screen will not load if I skip the disk check.

I have purchased a netgear wireless adapter to connect to my work supplier router. the router is set up with WPA-PSK and TKIP security, and is set not to broadcast. I have set up a network account with the correct details. My system does connect to the network, however, in the network screen the network is shown as "incorrect security information, WEP security required"

I finally got my wireless NW going, but now find that I need to re-enter the WEP key (after I select the SSID) every time that I want to network. How do I save my configuration information (including WEP) so that my network is connected every time I boot up? Ideally this would automatically select my SSID from the others in my neighborhood and the WEP would already be entered. My second choice would be to select the SSID and the 10-character WEP would laready be entered.

I have Vista x64 and I have read threads on this for weeks and can't fix it. I have file sharing/network discovery on, private network, password protection disabled, my shares set to everyone and everyone is on the same workgroup. My problem is that the x64 Vista computer will not see any of the XP (x86 or x64) computers and they can't see it from the Network Neighbourhood. However, if I type the IP address of the XP computers I
can access them. On the XP computers if I type the IP address I get an error that it isn't accessable and I might not have permission. However, if I type \192.168.0.100share or any of the other share names I access it just fine. pinging works too by IP but not by name. If I boot into the x86 install of have of Vista I can access XP computers from Vista and the Vista from XP by name and everything without typing any user names. The only differince between the two aside from x64 and x86 is that x86 isn't patched past SP1 as I don't use it often. Lastly after installing that XP patch I can see the x86 XP computers by name from the network map feature on Vista, still can't access them by name though...

Running Vista Ultimate x64 with IE8. Otherwise, the machine is updated and running perfectly. Message: "The webpage could not be saved" in Web Archive and Webpage Complete. It can be saved when HTML Only is selected, but when the file is opened it only results in opening the browser to whatever state it is currently in. It can also be saved as Text File but when that is opened, the file only reads: "Windows live hotmail".

I'm trying to network my new Optiplex 740 with Vista Business (32bit), and Norton 360, to my old Euro PC with W2K Pro. and SystemWorks, using basic Belkin /Realtek cards and yellow ethernet cable. My broadband connection is through my old machine and works perfectly, as does the network card installation.
My new machine also indicates that its card is correctly installed and functioning correctly. BUT the Network and Sharing Center window shows this computer as linked to an Unidentified network and no connection to either the other computer or broadband connection.........

I have tried 2 utilities so far...desktop shock and solways layout saver and neither work. Solway's says a menu option will be added to save layout but it is not there and desktop shock was almost as useless and my anti virus said it was a keylogger. Anyone know a utility for this that actually works with Vista (64)?
I need this because everytime I install new vid card drivers it scrambles my icon and I have to put all of them back which takes a few minutes but if I can find a utility to do this it would be nice.

I had some of my old family movie reels put onto DVDs.
I read that they need to be re-burned every few years to keep them from
deteriorating.
When I look at them with Windows Explorer, there is a folder = VIDEO_TS,
that contains files with extensions = BUP, IFO, VOB.
Can I save them on my computer then later re-burn them to DVDs for storage?

You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission.
Would you like to save in the 'username' folder instead?
When I click on YES, I get the same error but with the 'username' in the address.
I am administrator

I want to go back to XP from Vista only because I want to sync my laptop and desktop and don't have the money to upgrade Vista to the business version. I have several valuable emails, though, in Windows Mail on the Vista desktop. How can I save them to a flash drive so that I can wipe out the partition and reinstall XP? I will not do the switch if I cannot take my email trail with me.
I am a PhD student so my email documents are extremely valuable and I cannot take the risk of losing them. I've done this before when going from an older XP machine to a newer one, but I've never done this trying to go from Vista back to XP.

A friend of mine has Vista on his 2 home computers. His and his Wife's. They recently rearranged furniture, including the computers. When they plugged them all back in to their router, neither their computers, nor their xbox, could connect to the internet anymore. They called their ISP(Charter Communication) and Charter told them nothing was wrong that their cable modem was showing up fine and seemed to be working just fine. So they had a tech come out to their place and the guy was baffled. He swapped out their cable modem but said nothing was wrong with the old one, he just swapped them to make them feel better I guess. But even the tech guy couldn't understand why they suddendly cannot access the net. Even removing the router from the equation did not help one little bit. A buddy of theirs brought his laptop over to their house and was able to connect to the net through their cable modem so we know the modem is working just fine.
Well, thats when my Brother told them to call me. I did all the basic things you'd expect, starting from scratch. We started with connecting directly to the cable modem and got what I expected, zilch. I checked ipconfig and noticed they had a 169.*.*.* IP on both computers. by the way I'm doing all this long distance since they live several hours away from me. That 169 is wrong, or at least it seems like it to me so I banged away trying to change that with no results. Every change I made
reset to 169 instantly. Even a restart didn't help. So I had them plug it into the router and got a normal 192.*.*.* IP. At this point, several hours after we began, I gave up for the time being on that particular problem............

My Vista is about 10 days old and I've gotten into some problems. I tried changing the dpi to 150%, but it changed to 192% and I cant' get it back down. The 'apply' button is beneath the taskbar and not reachable! Same with the resolution--I made it less, but it is too fuzzy. However, can't get it back because 'OK' button isn't accessible. In Word, I've lost the regular 'save as' format and it takes me to some screen that won't work

I have a software program in which I want to save certain data files with a different name. When I use Save As, the software will not permit me to save the file, because it tells me that I need "administrator privileges." I am running on a Vista 32-bit platform. When I right-click the desktop icon in question in order to use Run as Administrator, the option does not appear in the drop-down list, as it does for other software programs that I use. Is there a way for me to get around this (i.e., to run the software as an administrator)? I know how to do this in Windows 2000, but I am still on a learning curve in Vista.
