My system specs are in my .sig, but in short I'm running Windows 2000, Norton Systemworks 2003 with NAV autoupdating, I've run AdAware and Spybot with no hits, and have received no indications of a virus. This problem happened before, a couple of months ago, I had to replace my profile to fix it.What happens is, after some random amount of time after a reboot/restart, the Start menu will only have about 4 items in it, and everything on the desktop becomes unclickable - no response at all to clicks, whether mouse or keyboard. Everything seems to be working normally, but nothing will respond to me. Logging off and back on will fix the problem

Starting yesterday my comp has begun to restart for no particular reason. Sometimes I can be on for a while, other times I can barely do a thing before it reboots. I first noticed it when I went to an Amazon page. I thought nothing of it, but upon going back to that same page it happened again. I assumed their must have been some bug in the page causing that, however unlikely that seemed. But soon after the computer was restarting seemingly at random. And for some odd reason if I click on my Ad Aware desktop icon this will also prompt the comp to restart. I'm stumped. I'm hoping it's just some virus I managed to pick up, and not a problem with the hard drive.
My XP has been randomly locking up for about 3 weeks now. I went out and bought a new fan thinking it was a over-heating issue. but the problem persists. I then went out and bought a new video card, thinking the same thing, again, the problem persists.
My computer randomly crashes and also reboots on it's own a few times a week, but I'm sure this isn't normal.I'm running Windows XP.There's no pattern when these problems occur. I could be surfing the web, playing a game or my computer would sit and idle for a little bit... then it'll reboot. This started happening a few weeks ago, but figured I could live with it. Unfortunately, it's gotten on my last nerve and I really wanna know why it does these things and how I can fix the problems.
Recently my AVG has popped up saying that i have recieved a Trojan. Also the computer and internet seem to be alot slower and the computer wont actually turn it off, it will only go into standby.
I recieved an auto update to install windows xp service pack 3, while following the wizard currently at the end it is asking me to back up my system. I don't know how to do that. I have ALOT of pictures I don't want to lose. If I cancel will it know that I never updated & ask me to update it again at a later time? How great is the risk if I just continue without backing up?
I keep getting random crashes and I don't know how to go about diagnosing the problem. Every so often I get random STOP error messages, and from the articles on the Microsoft Support site it appears to be a driver problem, but I don't know which driver. These are the errors I got recently (in order)
My computer seems to just hang up on me like it gets stuck in "idle" mode and doesn't let me have any keyboard/mouse control and I am forced to do a manual shut down and lose any data I may have been working on.
My computer is in perpetual reboot mode. It opens windows and as the programs are loading it will suddenly reboot itself. The problem started after I tried to install Koday Easy Share digital frame software.
I got XP PRO sp2 a few weeks ago and microsoft has downloaded their automatic (hot fix) updates about 20-25 times. The last download failed and the the message read that I would have trouble booting XP because of that failure. Well, they were right because now Xp will not boot up-- it just keeps rebooting.
To try to correct this I have tried to use my XP CD to repair it but it asks for a password from an administrator-- that's not me I have tried F5 to get into safe mode, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration..., and debugging mode and nothing works.
I start up my computer and then after a few minutes later, my computer screen goes black and automatically reboots on itself. After reboots it somehow hangs on me before getting into the login page of xp accounts.
This has been going on for a couple of months now.The PC would just reboot all of a sudden, usually when we pop in a CD in the drive, or log on to another user account. When we try to turn the PC on, it takes about 5-10 reboots before it goes on to the Windows logo (or whatever you call that). I'm worried that it might be a virus. I tried Trend Micro's Online scan and left it for a while only to find that the PC reboot in the middle of it, and now, I can't get the scanner to work anymore (I keep getting this error message.) Also, to be honest, we usually leave the PC on for days on end, so overheating might not be so out of the question. Aside from overheating, I just wanna know what else we have to troubleshoot for regarding this problem? Is it possible that a virus is causing it? That's all, I just need a troubleshooting checklist.
The problem is it will not boot. It only shows the first screen where it tells you the type of processor and bios chips, it gives the cpu type, then I guess it tests the RAM, the cache sram, then system bios shadowed, then video bios shadowed, then it states the hard drive, then cd drive and the last thing on the screen is " mouse initialized" then it just keeps restarting over and over. If I try to go into safe mode, it does give me all the options, however when I choose safe mode, it just goes into that same screen since it is the begining of the boot and it keeps restarting again. He is running windows xp, I tried to do a repair install but I guess I have a different version of win xp and it doesnt give me the option to repair.
I just installed an Audigy 2 ZS and everything works fine until I reboot; at which time my computer goes mute. There is nothing muted in the Volume Control applet, the Device Manager shows no conflicts, and onboard sound has been disabled. I'll post an abbreviated DXDIAG (this is with sound operational, if matters.Uninstalling the card, rebooting and, after letting windows detect the new hardware, reinstalling the driver, will correct the problem. Until I reboot again, at which time the computer is again, mute.
i wonder if anyone can help? our computer keeps rebooting on us for no reason that i can determine. i have done so many anti-virus scans and anti-spyware scans and so on with no result. there doesnt seem to be any specific program that causes the shut down. any suggestions would be welcome.
I had a computer with WINXP and a celeron chip. I changed motherboards to a Tyan with a 1.5 Pentium4. I reused the hard drives and when I start up the computer it gives me the message that Windows was not shut down properly and do I want to go toa last know restart or start in safe mode or start windows normally. No matter what i do, the computer will start to boot and then it reboots itself and the process starts all over again.
last week, my computer froze and my dad unplugged the power cord since he was the one using and now the xp keeps rebooting. it does not matter if i choose, safe mode, last known config, it keeps rebooting. it goes as far as letting you see the xp welcome screen, then for a second, you can see the bsod and it reboots. i have dual boot fedora/xp, both os in one hard drive. i replaced the original mobo about 3 months ago and now fedora does not work either. last night i downloaded pclinuxos live cd and booted off that cd and i can see all my files in the xp partition. so i thought it would be a simple, boot off the xp cd, select install xp, then select repair existing partition, but now after i select "install xp", the c partition shows up empty, as if there were no files in it. this is odd because when i restart, and select to boot windows normally it goes as far as the xp welcome screen, so obviously, xp is there. i also think there is something wrong with the mbr since i cant no longer see the grub dual boot selection screen. any help that you can provide is appreciated. this box is used in a small business and i would like to avoid having to reinstall. my specs, intel p4 2.8 lga 775, 1gb dual ram pc2 4300, intel mobo,
I recently aquired a Toshiba M35X-349, I don't know the history of this laptop. I put a hard drive in it and loaded OS system from recover disc. The problem is that after I instaled OS the computer will boot all the way to showing desktop, then it will reboot after about 60 seconds. It does this over and over. I did manage to reflash bios with version 2.0. I can start it up in safe mode with networking and the thing runs fine, no rebooting. Ive tried re-installing recovery disc and tried just installing windows only and get the same results, I even tried another known good hard drive.
I've copied a windows xp installation to a new sata drive in a new system. Now I get 'error loading os'I've tried fixboot, fixmbr and reinstalling over the existing os, but to no avail.
My computer keeps rebooting in normal mode, but I can log on in "Safe Mode". Whats weird is that I put a disk in my CD, Windows says device is working properly - but won't read the disk. Same thing happens with the floppy. Usually, when my computer booted before this problem occured, it went though normal boot sequence and I could see the light check for CD, and floppy...now it's not doing it. I can read hard drives in "safe mode", but CD, Floppy, and sound will not work?
I have a friend who has Windows 2000.Unfortunately, he has told me that his computer is in a consistent rebooting loop when he tries to start his machine. The only thing he had done before this stopped working was installing necessary updates as provided by Windows Update.
I tried to install XP Pro over ME. I ran the choice to scan first to see if there were conflicting programs. I uninstalled them (I thought). Now every time I boot up the black screen wants me to choose 1. Windows ME or 2. Cancel XP Installation.I now have to chose and ME because everytime I try to install XP it won't finish and gives me a variety of error messages including 'No server pk 2'(which I have downloaded again but it was already there). The worst thing is I lost my HP Photo Smart printer connection and I can't uninstall and reinstall because something is corrupt. It won't read downloaded printer drivers and asks me which program to open them. How does a normal person know this? Should I stop messin' around with this and take it to COMP USA?And I lost my system restore dates and can only restore the day all of this happened. I have a Dell 8100 Dimensions PC
I got an inspiron 1150 I keep in my office... one day, I went to use it, and the screen was froze up, so I hard reset it and it wuldnt boot. Just a flashing cursor on the top left corner, no post, boot screen, nuttin... if I unplugged the ac adapter, it would get to boot screen then freeze. So I bought a new ac adapter. No go. Still wont boot. Locks up. Battery indicator light dont show amber but it does recharge the battery.So... I got it booted, and then when I plug in the ac adapter, boom, instant lock up...Ive tried booting just on ac and just on battery... no go...SO i reinstalled xp... gets to the "installing devices" part, at 35 minutes remaining and locks up every ime...
I am having 2 problems.1.) Fixed 2.) Delay At Boot Up, Black Screen With Blinking Cursor When rebooting my PC, a black screen comes on with a cursor blinking for about 10-30 seconds, and then it proceeds to show the Windows XP splash logo, is there anyway to prevent or stop this black screen with the cursor, as it slows down the boot time.
Just in the past two months I have had a problem with something using all of my memory I thought at first it was Oulook when I close it I am at 1.93GB memory and it hangs there it seems to happen when I have two or three programs up at the same time as well. Rebooting will bring everything back to normal. I have run all of Nortons programs and it seems every thing is ok. Don't know what else to try or look at.
I have an HP Pavillion DV2047cl laptop. It just kept rebooting itself when I tried to start it up so I tried to do a system restore with the disks that came with it. It worked for about a day now it won't boot up. It says INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 14. Setup cannot complete. Error message 12544. I tried doing a system restore again but it stops partway through. Does anyone know what else I can try?
im running windows xp sp2 in the system. To make it short; I just updated it to sp3 and the updates are not even done yet the pc restarted. And from then on thats all it does. Just goin in circles trying to reboot...I tried to use the system recovery and it worked fine but after i did the windows update. it did it again.
I have installed alot of software, hardware, and networking stuff in my computer. Now I am having random rebooting. I checked the event logs and there are save dumps at the time of reboot as follows: The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x00000008, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xba60891b).
Well last night I was on my computer as normal, and accidentally knocked the monitor plug out of the back of the monitor when I was moving stuff around on my desk and tried plugging it back in to reactivate it to no avail, and then tried unplugging and plugging it back in again on the back of the computer itself.
I then decided to just restart the system by switching it off manually by pressing the on button on the front, which is a normal procedure I've had to do lots of times before when trying to get my monitor(s) to work properly. It then went to the Windows screen with the usual blue bar scrolling across and rebooted. I let it reboot again, and it came up with some options to:
(F1) Run Setup (Esc) Boot-up Menu (F10) System Recovery
I decided at this point (since I've encountered this problem before and had to boot the system up from a different drive), to press Esc to run the boot-up menu and tried each of the options in turn, since it rebooted again after each and every option I chose.............
I have been running a P4 3.2ghz computer that I have built for some time now. The problem is that my son kept pushing the power button when I was at work. Now the computer reboots when it hits the windows logo screen. I've tried to boot in safe mode but it stops loading files then reboots. I've also tried last good know configuration. I can't even get into safe mode command prompt. I've tried using the recovery console and typing in chkdsk and fixboot but that does not help. I also don't see an option for the repair xp.
