I would like to remove an extra background desktop setting that has set itself on top of a wallpaper desktop setting. I tried to remove it by going into control panel in appearance and themes and tried to change wallpaper for a new one and it will not go away.I don't know what else to do. My operating system is windows xp.

It might be the same color as the one that appears when you run chkdsk and stuff like that at boot time, so I was thinking the color is set in ntoskrnl.exe?
What are all these extra drives doing on my computer? I don't recognize them. I'm certain I didn't plug any extra drives into my computer. And I also want to get rid of these drives so the Safely Remove Hardware icon won't appear anymore

When you power up the system, the Windows XP logo screen comes up and then the desktop background comes up but it stops there. I can see icons and what I think are highlighted text but most of it is all black so I can't see the settings to try to fix??? The monitor works fine and the XP start up graphics are normal. I have already tried using the right click on the desktop and going into the properties that way. It won't even let me select any of the options for the wallpaper.
