"ficticious" Drives - Resulted From Much Changing Around Of Partitions

Jul 7, 2006

For some months I've had a problem with "ficticious" drives, they resulted from much changing around of partitions when I installed an extra hard drive.Using XP I have two 80 gig hard drives each split into two partitions. HD0 is C: and E:, HD1 is F: and S:, they are all ntfs, there is no spare disk space. There used to be other partitions for Fedora Core 4 but I've given up on that.A trivial problem is that exporer tells that I have logical disc Y: at a location that is unavailable, where do I find and elminate this entry. No other software seems to see this drive.A more irritating problem is that partition Work (E:) also appears as partition Work (X:). E: and X: are identical, X: is simply E: by another name, the partition only exists once.

Missing Drives And Partitions

Sep 11, 2005

I have a Windows XP home setup on a pentium IV system. I have two hard disks partitioned to give 3 partitions on one and two on the other. Quite often when I start windows it appears to boot normally but in Explorer I can only see the home partition. Explorer runs very slowly and crashes. I've checked for viruses, run adaware and spybot but can't fix it. I have AVG and sygate personal fire wall running.

I recently setup my new computer and during the XP setup I thought I had partitioned my Hard drive so I had 3 of them,I did two 100gb and the 3rd with the remaining. In my computer it shows my main one C:/ and the other D:/.as well, nothing. Its just there, properties says 0 bytes. How can I get the most out of my hard drive, and get the other partitions running? I want to be able to store all of my music on one, and files on the other and have the 3rd for misc files.

Boot - System Partitions Placed On Separate Drives

Jan 6, 2007

Now I cannot boot without the 120GB plugged in (tried unplugging the drive and booting and it said the it was Unable to boot from disk or something). I eventually deleted the partition on the old drive in setup and then canceled setup, and I still couldn't boot. So I reinstalled winXP on the old drive and now it boots fine. Of course what I have to do is reinstall XP with the drive unplugged, but do I have to completely redo everything, or can I somehow reinstall without starting from scratch? I've tried using the setup disk in windows with the drive unplugged (I know it isn't safe to unplug drives with the computer running but I had run out of ideas), but it said that it couldn't reinstall windows because there was no valid System Partition (which is on the other drive.

DVD / CD Missing After Changing Drives

Aug 23, 2005

I removed a CD/RW drive and replaced it with a DVD/RW drive. I now have 2 DVD/RW drives. They are NEC-3500 and NEC-3540. The NEC-3400 was in my system before and worked fine. I have tried the registry fix CDGONE, unintalling the IDE controllers, reinstalling the newest Gigabyte board drivers, and removing the high and low filters. None of it has worked. I still can't use either DVD/CD. I have nothing with an alert in the system devices. They are not showing there. Also I tried putting the CD/RW back in and the red light stays lit up as soon as I connect it. It will not recognize that either. Tried system restore to before the change and putting the DVD/RW, DVD player and CD/RW back in I had before and it failed the restore. I also tried re-storing the registry but system restore removed the save I had and it's gone. I also tried hooking up a brand new Seagate IDE 200 GB hard drive I bought for backups and it doesn't recognize it. I have add on SATA card which is where my main Hard drive was before this and it still boots up fine.I just cannot use any CD or DVD in my system which is a major problem. I had DVD easy creator and a DVD copy program, including a DVD for free. I removed them all incase it was causing a problem. Still nothing recognized. When the motherboard boots up it finds nothing under IDE then goes to my SATA board and boots up.The IDE controllers are turned on in BIOS and all IDE's are turned on for auto sense in the BIOS. I had not made any changes in the BIOS before or after this. I need someone with some ideas.

Running Windows On IDE Hard Drive / Changing Boot Drives

I was running windows on an IDE hard drive and bought a new SATA and installed a fresh copy of windows on it, now having a dual boot with the old installation on the IDE. I've been running on the SATA drive for a few months now and I want to remove the IDE drive from my system but when I disconnect it and reboot I get a message that tells me NTLDR is missing so I am assuming that the boot record is on the IDE drive. How can I make the SATA drive my main boot drive?

Mapped Network Drives: Programs Unable To Find Drives?

Apr 20, 2006

I have setup a wireless network between two computers in my office and have installed some software that will automatically backup folders on each of the two computers. It work by backing up certain folders on computer 1 to the hard disk on computer 2 and vice versa.I also have a program installed on both computers that uses the data on computer 1.simplify the process of locating the data on my network I have created virtual drives using the Map Network Drives function in Windows. However; if I start up my computer and open these programs - they can not find the drives, I have to open My Computer first and double click on the drives before the programs will read from them. I am guessing that for some reason Windows is not connecting to these drives, even though I have set them to "reconnect at logon".

Cd And DVD Drives Paths To These Drives / Deleted From Windows

Dec 27, 2007

I recently installed the program registery fix and i believe it has caused my Cd and DVD drives or the paths to these drives to be deleted from windows as they do not show up in my computer. I have tried the options in the following list but none of them have helped me, i'm really stuck but i can't fix the problem.
- I've tried deleting the upper and lower filters but they are not in the selected registery.
- I've tried a system restore but i can't go back to a previous point before the registery fix install.
- I've tried unplugging the leads and restaring but this didn't help.
- I've tried microsoft guided help but it couldn't find the upper and lower filters.
- i beleive they are still listed in my bios but don't know exactly what i'm looking for when in bios.
I don't know where to go from here, i also run alcohol 120% a virtual drive software and the registery fix has had no affected on these drives but i'm wondering if this maybe why the program registery fix deleted my actual drives becasue of the virtual drives and replaced the paths to my actual drives but i'm not sure it's just a guess. I've deleted the virtual drives and tried the steps above but i've had no luck.

My operating system is Windows XP Pro. As of yesterday all was fine, I even burned a DVD. Today "My Computer" isn't even showing my DVD/CD recorder, only showing Drive A: 3.5 Floppy. It started when I downloaded (I think) WindowsBlinds, just wanted to do some color changes. Well when I installed it, Norton came up with a Trojan. Norton Quarantined or deleted it and said no more further actions required. The install finished (windowblinds) and I tried a couple different skins and decided to uninstall it. Many Removable Drives - Shifting Other Drives

I am using Windows XP Professional SP2 on an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB. I have 5 internal HDD's and 2 external USB drives, I also have 2 DVD R/RW +- Dual Density drives, a Zip 250 and an Orb 2GB drive. So far this year I have had to reinstall my Windows like 8 times and done about 4 Windows repairs! Each time I seem to get 4 extra removable drives added to my system. In Disk Manager they are listed as "Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device", I have changed Device Usage to Do Not use this device (disable) and also I have uninstalled each device. Unfortunately, each time I restart the computer, they come back, shifting other drives to another drive letter.

Want To Resize Partitions

I installed Windows XP Home on a barebones computer, and mistakenly made the partition for the C drive much smaller (1.96 G with only 33MB free) than the D drive (1.6 G used, 24.9 G Free). Now I keep getting low disk messages. I want to resize the partitions so that the C Drive is larger without having to reformat both drives if that's possible. The file system on the C drive is NTFS and FAT32 on the D drive.CPU is 1.3 Ghz Athlon with 120 RAM.

How Can I Make Two Partitions One Again ?

I have a question for you all and I hope you can answer it.I have two partitions on my harddrive at the moment. The first partition is my C: partition, where Windows XP and all the applications are run from. These partitions were set up by the people that made my computer. I have about 4 % diskspace left on the C: partition and I want to create more storage space on the hard drive by removing the second partition. The second partition is a back up of my older hard drive.I have both backed up already on external harddrive and I use Acronis True Image 10 Home to make a weekly image of my hard drive.

Deleting Partitions?

Nov 10, 2007

Hey there, i'm currently running on Windows XP with a 120 gig Maxtor Harddrive. During my last reformat I'm guessing I did it wrong and mistakenly made a second partition while leaving the old one intact. I've checked through all my biggest storage heaps for what could be causing my HD to be so full. But my multimedia section is only 28 gigs, whereas the harddrive is showing 85 gigs worth of used space.
Multiple partitions is the only thing I can think of. So is there a way I could find out if I have an extra partition, which one is the right one to delete, and the process of deleting it, possibly without having to transfer all my files. Any help would be appreciated.

Loosing Mapped Drives / Loosing Connectivity To Drives?

I work for a fire department and they have Desktop Authority map certain network drives when they login. For some reason, DTA will map the drives when they login, and everything works fine, but after an hour or two, they lose connectivity to that drive and are no longer able to access it. I know this is very vague, but has anyone had this problem?BTW, I just recently upgraded from NT 4.0 to Server 2003 Standard, and we've had tons of other little problems with permissions and the like. Is this the cause of the dissapearing drives?

Recombining Drive Partitions

Oct 25, 2008

Under my computer, I have two drives, C and D (empty). I have never intentionally partitioned my hard drive into the two drives, and have thought nothing of it until recently when I realised I have only 1GB of space left of the 45GB on the C drive.I was just wondering if there is an easy way of recombining these two drives so that I can have just one big drive back. I have heard that commercial products such as partition magic do the job, but I can't see much point in paying 70 for some software that will only get used once.

Installing Over Vista No Partitions?

I, as do most, hate Windows Vista. Even after turning off the UAC and removing components that i found unnecessary, I still found problems. I much prefer Windows XP. Instead of manually removing components, security settings, etc., I decided just to remove Vista itself. I have searched and searched for a forum all over the internet and all i can find are threads about partitioning of about replacing vista on a laptop (which apparently has SATA driver problems or something to that effect). So I was wondering a few things:
1) Is there a way to install XP over Vista directly?

Cannot Reinstall OS After Deleting Partitions

Apr 25, 2005

I am wanting to re-install windows as the computer no longer boots into windows.I have gone through the full f disk and format c: scenario while deleting creating partitions and then insert the CD to boot from so that the xp installation can begin.I feed the correct sata drivers and it finds the hard drive. here is where it goes wrong, I delete all the partitions listed and create a new one with the full 125gb of space. It then asks what i wish to format the partition with and i select NTFS. It goes to the screen signaling that it is beginning the installation but goes through it very quickly! as is complete in about 10 seconds, at this point it comes back and says "setup was unable to format this partition. The disk may be damaged "make sure the drive is connected to the computer etc etci don't think the drive is corrupt as it was working before i tried to restore my pc to a previous restore point when the pc was fully working after getting the pc back from a friend with missing registry files. (At which point i forgot the installation was also corrupt due to missing windows files, and not when i had successfully re-installed xp before lending the pc to a mate)
