Can Only Access Guest Account - Have No Administrator Rights

Feb 2, 2009

I can only access my computer using the guest account. This is husband's computer and he has admin rights. When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I am limited in downloading/running virus scans because of the non-admin status.

Desktop Blank - Have One User Account With Administrator Rights

Jan 2, 2008

I'm using Windows XP. I have one user account with administrator rights.

When I boot up, my desktop is blank except for the desktop background. In other words, no icons, no start menu, start up programs don’t load, etc. At one point, I got this error:

"Windows cannot find '/idlist, :400:2196,c:'. Make sure you typed the name correcttly, and then try again ..."

(I haven't been able to replicate this error, though. It showed up once.)

Disable All Accounts - Administrator / Guest Account

Jul 14, 2010

I was just trying to get rid of the welcome screen that appears everyone windows xp start, so I disabled ALL the accounts (including administrator & guest account) in Administrative “My Computer> Local Users and Groups” I showed 3 accounts: One in my name, another "Administrator" and third one "Guest". I disabled all of them When I rebooted the pc, the windows xp welcome screen appeared but it did not show any accounts (i.e. I did not have any account to click to). I also tried pressing CLT + ALT + DEL twice to get the window where Username and Account password are to be typed but it doesn't work. It says that "Your account has been disabled. Please Contact System Administrator" (Even the administrator account give that message). I tried typing everything...

Password Guest Account - Disable By Default

Aug 12, 2002

After reading Joseph Doyle's submission regarding this I would like to point out that you can set a Guest account password by simply doing this. This method is somewhat simpler in that you do not have to mess around with CMD.exe.1. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.3. Select the "Users" folder under "Local Users and Groups".4. Right click on the "Guest" account and click "Set Password". When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click "Proceed". You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.I have always considered security a top priority and considering the ease of doing this I would highly recommend that everyone sets a Guest account password. Even though the Guest account is disabled by default, why not do this just for the extra bit of security? Local Users and Groups is not available in XP Home. A way to set a password for the guest account in Home and Pro: click start - run - type: cmd - in the command window type: net user guest * - hit Enter - you will be prompted for the password to use.

Visitor Turns Computer Off

Jun 8, 2008

This sight has always been a God Send and someone has always helped me brilliantly, considering my knowledge of computers only goes so far.A friend from Iraq has a computer and his children always seem to mess it up. He has one of his friends work on it and it does always come back to life but I have downloaded a few things on his computer to scan and get rid of all the bad stuff.Okay, so this last time, a friend fixed it and now he can not go under "Guest" without the computer shutting itself down and when I told him he could just eliminate guest, he said he had things saved on it he doesn't want to lose.

Administrator Rights Refuse To Run

Sep 9, 2005

I'd like to know how others deal with programs that require Administrator rights or they refuse to run. I'm currently running Windows 2000 Pro, but I'll be moving to XP and the issue is the same with either OS.I don't want my domain users to have Administrator rights because they install things like webshots and ITunes and other junk that could lead to spyware. How do others balance this.

Local Administrator Rights?

Apr 17, 2007

In our Windows 2003 domain at work, we have a number of laptops that connect to our network. The users of these laptops (both Windows 2000 and XP) need to take them home to work on them. Some of them have hardware devices at home such as printers and wireless home networks, which they may want to connect their laptops to. should you make laptop users a local administrator of their laptop? It would mean that they can connect anything to their laptop and install anything onto it. There have been times where our users have messed up their machines because they have local admin rights to it. What kind of policies do you lot use in this kind of scenario?

In all the years I've been running Windows, I never used the features provided in setting up Users Some of my friends and family have told me that care must be used to set up Users because the wrong setup can bite you or, you can lock yourself out of the logon if you're not careful.Where can I get a comprehensive guide? Folks are telling me I need to browse the Internet (I use Firefox) with a restricted user, rather than as Administrator, but the Windows Help is a bit esoteric about that.

Admin Account Treated As Limited User Account

Mar 21, 2009

Windows XP Home SP2 in a Gateway Performer 1300 P4 I recently purchased a used computer locally from a private party. It seemed to work fine. Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.

Renaming Primary User Account - Renamed The Account

Feb 17, 2007

I've gotten myself in somewhat of a pickle. I have a system that I had built for my husband. I later built a new box for him and decided to sell the previous one. A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".
