Crashes Systems When Starting Up Games
Dec 30, 2007
Here's what's going on:Two months ago (give or take), I built a new computer from scratch. Here are the specs: Windows XP Pro SP1 AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.01 GHz 2.00 GB RAM 250 GB Hard drive Nvidia Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT I've had The Sims 2 (base game + 8 expansions) installed since I assembled the computer, and it ran beautifully. For Christmas, I got Orange Box and Myst: The Collection. It took a bit of work to get Orange Box running properly-- if I didn't run it in a lower directx setting, it crashed my computer. But I got that issue ironed out and was able to play the game just fine. Then I tried to install Myst Masterpiece Edition, discovered it's not really compatible with Windows XP, and-- after installing and uninstalling Myst and Quicktime several times-- decided to uninstall it and figure out the problem later. Having had problems with all my other games, I decided to load up The Sims 2.

I recently had to reformat an reload windows XP on my laptop. Now, when I start my computer it comes to a list to select which copy to use (even though only 1 is loaded). I have run into this before, but can't remember how to get rid of the invalid one.?

Since purchasing my computer a couple of years ago, I have been afflicted with random 'BSOD' crashes. At the outset, they would occur whenever I ran anything intensive (a three-dimensional game, for example). I was told the problem was likely a lack of/bad RAM, so I purchased more. For a while, all was well, until the crashes began occuring again (a myriad, really: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, etc.) some months later. Not possessing any vast knowledge of computers, I again purchased new RAM. The problems seemed to subside, though occured still occassionally (no rhyme nor reason).

1. Whenever I play a game on my machine (such as Zuma, Rocket Mania), I get "system has encountered a problem" errors or blue screen crashes. There is no consistency in the errors that I or my husband can see.
I have:
1. downloaded and reinstalled Audio and Video drivers (many times), including reverting backwards
2. run disc clean, System Mechanics clutter clean, spybot, internet clean--if I do these and then boot, the games will run (sometimes).
3. deleted and physically relocated the page file (which is set to max--4096)
4. done full virus scan, registry clean, adscan---my machine is so clean it squeeks
2. Keyboard is freezing when I'm typing (either online or off--doesn't matter which program either). The display stops and I can keep typing. After maybe 10 seconds, the screen catches up. I have deleted and reinstalled my keyboard.
3. I have lost my system sound but have sound on all games (except one).

I was playing a game normally... After playing for a LONG time, the game briefly paused and I saw some visual artifacts, textures were all messed up etc. But I loaded a savegame and it worked fine after that. (I admit it, I had tried overclocking my GPU but that was over three weeks ago and I reset the settings back to normal.) Then, after about an hour, I used alt+tab to check out a walkthrough, then alt+tabbed back and it took much longer than normal to get back into the game...

I have a high end Dell system (XPS Gen 2) and am running XP Pro, SP2. While I'm in "Full Screen" mode playing games, it crashes on me, no matter which game I play. I get a blank blue screen and hear a competitive "thumping" sound. The only way I can continue from there is to hard boot. I have more than enough memory and processor speed to handle the games I play.

I just built a new system with an Asus PK5-E/WIFI-AP P35, an EVGA 8800GT, and an E8400. I updated the BIOS on the motherboard to support the CPU properly. But when I went to run the XP install from the CD (SP2 slipstreamed), it inspects the system for hardware information and then goes to a black screen. The whole system stays on, and the hardware goes idle.I know the CD works fine and the CD drive is ok. I had transplanted them into the older system to check to see if something was up. The ram seems fine, ran memtest86+ for a few hours with no errors. I tried pulling some of the ram out but nothing changed. I'm completely stumped as to whats wrong.

I am confused, but I will describe this best I can: explorer.exe crashes when viewing folders or anything built on explorer.exe (I guess) at exactly 11 seconds in on them. It also randomly crashes every couple hours. Im extremely confused by all this

I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.

I started getting browser and sometimes PC crashes. At first it seemed to be browser related. But the PC would also crash when idle. I tried disabling add- ons in Firefox and opening in safe mode. Tried using Chrome but it would crash with the message that Flash had malfunctioned. Then I started getting Stop messages and BSODs.I hadn't installed and new hardware and, I don't think, installed any new big programs except for updates to existing ones.
I emailed a few of the mini dump files to a friend. He said they didn't specify which drivers were causing the problem. But it might be something to do with the video or the network card. I rolled back drivers. No change. I updated drivers and uninstalled lots of programs. For a month everything seemed stable. Then the BSODs started to return. Infrequently at first but then more regularily. Sorry the story is a bit confused but it is difficult to remember every detail of what happened and the order I did things in.

For about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".

I recently reformatted my machine and for some reason the first time i put in the recovery cd to reformat it installed windows instead of reformat. Then I put the cd in a second time and my computer was reformatted and installed windows a second time. So when i start up my computer it gives me a choice to start one of two operating systems of windows xp. Any ideas on how i can get rid one version without reformatting again. It is annoying having to choose one version every time. If you need more info or a better explanation just say so and i'll try my best.

I have a problem with 2 operating systems on my computer. I had to replace the hard drive and I could not find my xp disk so I installed 2000. I then found xp and installed it as a complete install not an upgrade. It is xp pro. Now when I start the computer it goes to a black screen asking which operating system I want to use XP or 2000. I want to get 2000 off and just run XP right from the start. Can I do it without reformatting and reinstalling XP?

I was given a Compaq Presario Laptop that has both Windows 98 and Windows XP installed on the one hard drive (Partitioned into drive C and D) How do I get the windows 98 off? It won't let me reformat either drive (so I could just re-install.) XP is not listed in the progams, so I can't just uninstall it. It won't even boot from the CD drive (Although I've set it that way in set up.) I want just XP and would like it all redone. How do I do it?

We have a network of computers running at work.
5 comps in total.
All running XP Pro.
They all connect to the network and internet through a net gear router. My net gear router has only 4 ports so i connected a netgear switch to one of the ports to extend it and allow another 2 connections.
One of the computers would run a server application software, and the other computers would run the client application which would connect to the server thru the LAN.
All was working fine, with no issues at all.
The problem:
Recently we upgraded all of our computers to DELL. Optiplex 740's.
Specs are nothing special:
OptiPlex 740MLK SF AMD X2 4800 (2.5Ghz 1MB 65W)
E-Star : Energy E-Smart enable
Memory : 1024MB (2x512MB) 667Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel NON-ECC
Hard Drive : 160GB (7200Rpm) Serial ATAII 3Gb/s
All running Windows XP PRO – Some have been updated fully, others no updates at all.
one of my client application stopped responding and was hanging.

I do on the other hand have a Win2K prof. disk that i would like to install on this comp so that it can be used again. I was wondering if someone might be able to either tell me or point me in the right direction of getting this machine re-installed with the win2k op sys. i.e tutorials etc. I also do not have the bios install disk so the bios will need to remain the way it is.

My hard drive is divided into two partitions running Windows ME and Windows 2000 Professional NT. Windows 2000 is currently causing problems in that mouse movement is delayed, and also the shutdown process is lengthy, followed by a blank blue screen, sometimes not shutting down at all.As I would prefer to make a clean install of XP Pro it would be great to get rid of the former operating systems. Can anyone advise on how to go about this?

I bought a new dell dimension 4700 for my sister and two months later it crashed. Well she spent 6 hours on the phone with dell and all they did was a half assed restore which allowed her to keep her files but everything else barely worked. She brought it to me and I formatted the drive in xp setup and reinstalled xp pro. The computer runs great but when it boots up it asks me which operating sytem I want to run; the old xp home or the new xp pro. Then when you select the xp pro it boots up but that white line goes by real slow and it takes a minute or so to boot. Once it is booted it runs like a champ but how do I get rid of the old xp pro. I don't get it since I formatted the drive and removed the old partitions.

I'm going to wipe my drive and re-install the operating system, the only problem is I have two OS's and need to reinstall them both again . I've been told to install ME first and then install XP. I have a few questions I need a bit of help with.
1. Seen as I'm installing two operating systems is there anything I need to do extra to if I was just installing one. For instance which directory I install them both in etc.
2. Could someone either link me to a very simple and detailed guide on installing Windows XP Professional or else write out there own guide for me. Remember it needs to be easy to understand, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to computers.
