I purchased a Dell computer last year. My kids were going on the computer and I started to get pop ups and it was running slow. I had my computer reformatted (I believe thats what you call it). When I hooked my computer back up, it ran great, no more pop ups and it was running faster than ever. One problem, I cannot sign in to certain sites. I cannot sign in to Ebay, Verizon, etc. I brought my computer back to my friend with the problem and he hooked it up and I was able to sign on everything there. My friend has adelphia and I have verizon. I called verizon and was on the phone with them for hours. Cked all settings, they searched and searched and no luck. My computer is only a year old and I have not been on because Im having this problem. Any suggestions what this could be. I have no idea why I would not be able to access any of these sites when I can at my friends house with powerlink. I want to mention that the disc for the settings that came with my dell computer was missing, my friend went on the dell sight and downloaded this, he says thats not the problem. Im stuck and running out of ideas what this could be.
My laptop i can access regular websites but I am not able to access secured websites or my aim account. First off I checked the computer for viruses and spyware and it seems to be fine and also i tried to repair IE and even reset all the defaults. We did all these little configurations that i found on google but it seems not to be working.I also tried to download firefox and wont load up at all.
Is there any reason the hosts file should not block sites properly?Certain sites I have put in there aren't being blocked, and this is a problem. Also, does it only block the major site (just the www.badsite.com) and not all subdomains of that? (for example "signup.badsite.com")
I'm really clueless as to my next, step possibly a re-install of windows, i have a laptop and another PC both networked to my PC using crossover cables. 2 network cards in my computer bridged and ICS shared over the bridge. Both can access the internet with no problems using internet explorer, MSN etc. open web pages using Internet Explorer or Firefox sign into msn has once or twice since this problem started I have scanned with ad-aware and norton 2007 both up to date, found some things and fixed them but still not working.
when out of no where, I received those weird progams on my PC which are those fake Virus scanners and such. i then deleted it from the source, and ran my Nortan scan and my spysweeper, and they found nothing wrong with my pc. Now, the PC will NOT let me go to "important" sites. For example, Bank of America, Paypal, anti-virus sites, Ebay, etc. But will let me go to sites like Myspace or forums. I had my favs on my toolbar as tiles so its easier to access them, i had about 10 of them, and now only 5 remain after the whole thing happened, and the 5 that were removed were "important" sites. Almost every thing on my tool bar was removed, including File, Edit, View, Tools, and such. My search engine is still displayed though.
My computer came down with a nasty virus that I didn't want to deal with anymore, all the computer would do was constantly reboot, could never get to log-in. So I bought a new HD (which I really wanted anyway ) with intentions of loading new OS on the new drive and using the old drive as a slave, and after copying all the files I needed off the old drive I was going to reformat it for storage. Everything worked out fine except on the old drive I had a separate password protected admin login named Billybob where I kept all my important work files. I also used the sharing and security function to protect Billybob from access from other users. Now I can't access the files myself. I can only access the files that were in the 'Guest' profile that wasn't password protected. When I click on or try to move the files in Billybob I get the 'access denied' message. I used the HD utility program that came with my new HD and it allowed me to actually move the files on to the new HD but the files are still protected when I try to open them. Any help on this would be REALLY appreciated as I have over a years worth of technical work stuff in Billybob that I will never be able to replace.
One of the kids downloaded rapid antivirus and it's screwed everything up. I've managed to get rid of therapid AV, but it looks like I've got some malware/adware of some sort running. Attempts to get to symantec, mcaffee, avg, etc give site not available results in IE 7 - includes techguy.org!!!!, but non-"fixit" sites like google and everything else in the world I can get to. Every few clicks, the url is redirected to an ad site. I've run adaware and trendmicro which found Troj_vg_fcx and removed it, but the problem persists.
I need some links to some sites that will provide information and also fixes for blue screen errors in Win NT/2000/XP. I will be using them on my website, which in turn will be used at my workplace. Thanks for any help that you can offer.
I'm running XP-Pro, ACT 2006 and Goldmine 6.0 databases. Whenever I need to sign on with my user name first and last name then enter a password to access secure websites the last name of my user name changes to a series of letters with no meaning and then I am denied access to the sight. This also happens when I want to enter my "Signature" at the end of an email
I have Windows XP Proffesional and when I go to the username screen, beside my user name it sais,"1 unread mail message." I checked my mail and I can't get that message to go away.
A simple, silly question but where is sign in on these pages? I can't find it and to be identified as the upright character I am I need to go to 'sign out' before I am recognised. What am I not seeing?
I was trying to sign into the domain on one of my workstations when I got an error message. I solved that problem before by removing the computer from server, joining a workgroup, then rejoining the domain. Only problem is that this time, when I joined a workgroup, I forgot the password to sign on locally, and Last Known Good Configuration won't help in this case. Is there anyway to sign on to the local machine? Even if I'd have to create another account, that's fine. Or is there a way to get the computer to give me the option to log on to a domain? Maybe I should have named this thread "Cannot Log On To XP"
I have to sign in each time, several times a day, even though the "sign on auto" is checked. I never log off. No help from hotmail just the obvious, do the above. Would appreciate a solution. Use XP Pro.

I was trying to register with Windows Messenger (Windows Live ID). One of the entries is my e-mail address. I entered it properly, but when I finished with the page, it returned with this message:
"The portion of your e-mail address that follows the @ symbol is part of a "reserved domain" such as live.com, hotmail.com, msn.com or passport.com. Please type a different e-mail address" I know I entered my address correctly (tried it several times). Any thoughts?

Is there a way to get an adminstrator sign on back without reinstalling Windows XP? I was working late and was doing some maintinance at home and I accidentally deleted the adminstrator some how.
I set up a guest account for a housesitter to use while I was away. Since I've been back, I can't get into my accoutn. It's not on the options when signing in, and the only place I find my account is when I right click Start and explore. When I click on my accounth there, it says access denied. I also can't sign in as administator. I've read some advice to similar problems here, but nothing seems to work. What do I do?
I am currently trying to get my desk top ready for my cousin to use at school, we set up a user password on it when you first turn it on, however she can now not remember the user name/password combo we set. How do I get around this to reset them? Xp home edition is what is being used.
Folders were named "+stuff" and "++++junk" were accidentally deleted from my documents. didn't appear in the recycle bin can't be found to restore. Anyone heard of this being a known issue can the plus sign be used in folder names? I've tried to duplicate and can't. I can create new ones and delete and restore
