I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes".
However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes.

These are all things I do regularly (not every day but more than twice a wweek) and I backup to external drive once a month at least

Apr 22, 2005when I reboot its extremely slow. Control Alt Delete shows 99% cpu use under processes. Not sure whats going on but been running find for a month at least haven't installed anything odd lately. Have a virus scanner and ad-ware installed.
edit * safe mode it loads fine no slow down.
edit 2 - If I set windows to not load system services in msconfig it fixes the problem. What options does that load?
Administrator Permissions - Cannot Load Routers Hardware Or Software
May 18, 2010My 13 yr old daughter has been given and old laptop running Xp Pro, but can only log in as a user. The laptop belonged to to our health service ( mother is a nurse ) and the IT dept are the administrators but will not remove any permissions. This means i cannot load any routers hardware or software to get on the internet. When trying to load a BT ISP disc the comment "No administrator privilages declared". My question is there a way of me removing the administrator account or getting around the problem. The laptop did not come with a sytem disc so cannot reinstall Xp pro. I have a windows system disc Xp home for my desktop but presume it can be used on that one machine.

Apr 12, 2006First my computer was cutting off in the middle of any program. I decided to delete everything on the drive and reformat it and reload windows xp. While trying to load windows xp it would load the set up but when going to load files it locked up everytime. I tried also loading windows 98, 95 and they too locked up. At one point it said I had a virus in my boot sector and at another time it said I had a virus in my RAM. I got a program called PC Beginner to help partition my drive and redo the MBR. I can partition the drive and format it but windows still doesn't load. Now I wonder if there is a problem with the mother board and I have a dual bios board, I was wonder if there is a program loaded in the dual bios that may somehow causing my problem. If so what can be done to clear the problem? How can I get windows reloaded?

Nov 22, 2008Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.

This time I decided to try and restore policies and get rid of the virus by hand... but I couldn't find a guide telling how to get these policies back! Has anyone created a guide or done this before? Cant Load Load Os Microsoft Xp - Scandisk Checked
Oct 15, 2009PC was rebooted and this message showed up. I couldn't get to safe mode so I put the XP disc in. I got to the D:winint dir and tried to run bootcfg to scan for the boot file. It came back that it couldn't find it. I was able to see the dir's and data on the 2 drives. I ran chkdsk to see if that would solve the problem, it didn't. Do you think this is a BIOS problem or a missing boot problem. If it was the BIOS would I be able to read the drive. Looking for a fix without destroying everything.

Can't Run Msconfig
Apr 3, 2007I have hp compaq nc6320 laptop recently bought. It was working absolutely fine until the day before yesterday. However, yesterday one of my friends brought his flash drive and I copied some of the documents since then I am having a big trouble. I need experts help please. I have encountered the following problems.
* Can't run msconfig, cmd, regedit ect, however, explorer can run
* tried to download antivirus software it did not let me do, I had one thought was not good enough and
uninstall it, later on I could not install the other one too. My pc is now without antivirus.
*when I use IE 7 search engine as google.co.uk it crashes meaning it opens the pages about the search title however it closes before I could get the access to them
*I used online scanning facilities for if there are virus in my laptop, it showed me worm.vb.dj

Msconfig - Safeboot - Now Won't Start
Dec 23, 2005Have XP, service pack 2, and all updates. Use Norton, MS Antispyware, Adaware, Spybot, and weekly check with online virus check programs. Machine is clean (I hope). Have 2 user accounts on the machine. Had email issues with the ISP and got resovled/ I could open Outlook Express from my user account, but then my wife's user account wouldn't open Outlook Express at all. Thought I would try in Safe Mode to see if maybe some other program was interfering. NOTE: I did no harware or software change. Went to msconfig, and clicked on Safeboot.
