Won't Accept My Installation Key
Aug 20, 2008
So here is my problem, I have a Macbook and I used Bootcamp to put on Windows XP x64 Edition. Then my hard drive crashed and I had to reload all my software and everything, but when I started to put Windows back on my Computer, this is the same disk and product key i used on my last hard drive, Windows wouldn't accept the key for XP. I was wondering am I just screwed in that i need to buy another version of Windows, or can i get this key to work

Had XP administrator username and password set up the first time I installed XP, but never enabled it until yesterday. Reebooted this morning and now windows won't accept my password. I don't know why it's not taking my password, or if I wasn't typing it in correctly (did not have caps lock on), but now I'm totally locked out.
If I load the xp cd, is there an option to unlock xp if I have the original serial number that was loaded for that system? I'm on my old system right now. I know you can reset the bios password, but I highly doubt that resettting the cmos jumpers will clear the xp logon password.

Thought I was putting a series of DVDs I bought on my external hd until my C drive told me it was full.
The USB port is recognized in the system tray, but when I go to my computer the external hd isn't there.
I also have a firewire connection for the ex hd, but there's nothing there either.

I have two computers, both running XP Home SP 1. On the desktop at home, I use a JPG image as my Desktop Background. On the laptop at school, I can't use a JPG. I have to use a BMP. The BMP file is about 7 times larger than the JPG file. Question: How do I tweak the laptop to let me use a JPG file as a Desktop background?

Have a subscription to Zinio digital magazines, and download PC Magazine once every few weeks, and read it on the computer. Awhile back, I started geting an error message: "Windows has blocked this software because it couldn't verify the publisher". And the software it won't download is ocget.dll. I tried to get into IE to turn this off, but was unsuccessful. Anyone know how I can turn this thing off. I feel that if I could downloda the dll, I could get my magazines.

I have what probably amounts to a stupid question, but I honestly can't recall. I've come across an old system that needs to have windows XP reinstalled, and I'm not sure what disk I'm going to require. The System is an old Dell Dimension 4550, and had an install of Win XP pro SP1 installed on it, and has the sticker stuck to the side of it (with the serial). My question is, before I wipe this thing, I want to make sure I have, or can get a Version of XP that will accept that particular serial when I do the reinstall. I'd hate to bring it down and then find that I can't get it to reinstall with its original XP Key.I have access to pressed/original versions of oem/retail Windows XP SP2 for sure.
I may have a version of SP1 somewhere, but I'm not even sure what type it was, I think it worked with Volume License keys (I'm assuming the actual CDs are different for VL OEM and Retail). My question is, are newer versions such as XP Pro SP2, going to be aware of older serial keys?Would XP SP3 work (I hear it doesn't ask for the key at the beginning but at the end), and if so is there a place where the ISO for XP SP3 is legitimately available?I have a valid XP SP1 key, I just want to make sure I can get it back up after I wipe it.

DEP has been closing my browsers for the past few days. Right now I'm using Start>Search>Search the internet.
I can get into the settings and change them to allow programs such as firefox and internet explorer but once I've closed the window, DEP has decided it's not safe again.

Was using computer all day yesterday and all was well, but when I stepped away for only a moment I returned to find that ALL my icons are gone and my display picture was reset to blue. I have cleaned the computer to see if I had picked up a virus/worm but all is well or is now. But the problem is.....I cannot get my desktop to accept any shortcuts and it won't allow me to pick a desktop picture. I can access all of my programs/files etc. through my start menu but when I try to create a shortcut it won't. Don't know what to do from here, it seems like it must be just an easy fix but darn if I can figure out what that fix would be.

I have a five year old dell dimensions 8200. Three years ago, I added a 250 gig. D-drive. My computer has been so slow that I wanted to reinstall windows. So, erased and formatted my D-drive and put windows on it. I then added a program called "Wipe Drive" in order to erase my C-drive. (I was thinking to use my d-drive mainly and c-drive for backup). I closed my computer, then when I went to reboot, i first got the message "ntldr is missing press control alt delete." So, I did this. I soon did not get the ntlrd message and got a message saying failure to boot and press contol, alt, delete to restart. I tried to instal windows again and it did not boot. I did the f2 thing and made sure my cd-rom was first. I did the f12 thing and tried to open cd. Nothing has worked to help boot or get to the blue screen that lets me choose drive.I think I erased important start up info on my c-drive.

I have a batch file which copies key folders and files between hard disks - It would seem that although it will accept only truncated folder and file names (e.g. progra~1) for the source, sub folder and file names are written to the target drive full length. Am I right in thinking that source names have to be written in the truncated form (after all it is, basically a DOS command)? if not how can this be done?

Today I went and bought a new hard to install xp clean but only to find out Microsoft wouldn't accept my product keys which for some reason they have blocked . I never thought a retail version could be block . I call Microsoft to find out why my keys are being blocked . I was told that I was trying to activated it to many times in one day , or something like that , which really wasn't the case . I really never got a straight answer as to why . So now my retail version is no good to use .

I've lately had some problems with my win-xp (home) following installation/ un-installation of daemon tools that corrupted some registry files. After an unsuccesfull repair-instalation of xp, i re-installed xp onto the secondary partition of my hard drive (d:, the original instalation being on c. I was intending to format the c: drive, then instal a copy of xp-pro i have onto it
finally moving the files i want to keep back from the d: drive onto the c: drive. The problem i'm now having is on formatting i recieve the error message 'system partition is not allowed to be formatted', as it is the primary partition. Can i go about formatting this drive in partitions and proceed with the re-install without having to remove the files i have on the d: drive? How might i go about this?

I started up the computer, watched the BIOS detect the RAM, hard drive, etc, and then was greeted by a blank screen instead of the Windows boot screen. It proceeded though, and after a few seconds flashed to another black screen, this time displaying the cursor. I'm guessing this is the logon screen, but nothing displays but the cursor. (Note that the video card and monitor are both fine...I tried swapping them out just in case.)

I am trying to install SP3 on a Windows XP Home (currently SP2). The installation is hung on "Finishing Installation - Performing cleanup". I downloaded the installer from the MS Download center (it didn't appear in Windows Update). Is it safe to turn off the computer (since I can't close the installer), or should I let it sit for a while longer (it's been hanging for a few hours)?

In performing a clean installation of Windows XP is it best to install the microsoft updates first once you've downloaded them from the Microsoft catalog? For instance Microsoft updates, Chipset drivers, Video drivers etc.

I tried to install XP Pro SP2 on my laptop and somehow my product key was no good. I first reformated my hard drive and Windows installation begun but I had to get out since the product key was invalid.I finally noticed I had the wrong disk. When I finally found the right disk with the right key, the old installation kept on coming back where I left it. How can I start all over again, with the reformating and reinstallation from scratch? I really don't know how to do this. Is there a special command at reboot? Do I have to put the CD in or not? I'm not sure anymore since it's been years since I've tried this.

Firstly, I currently have Vista installed, and wanted to install XP again. How can I approach this while achieving dual boot features? Second, if the only way to get dual boot is to reinstall XP and then Vista, how do I do it because my computer only came with Vista restore disks.Third, if I do reinstall Xp then Vista, what is the easiest way I can literally take my computer the way it is, all programs, documents, settings, etc... and then bring it back after I do a clean install. I currently do have a 60gb external hard drive as well.
