Win Media Center 10 Starts Then Crashes
Feb 25, 2008
This problem only started recently but I cannot think of anything I have installed or changed that would have contributed. Some time ago, I installed Media Center 11, and when it didn't work well, rolled back to 10. Everything worked ok for several months after the rollback.About two days ago, when I attempted to start MC10, the program screen would come up, then the program shuts down with no error message.I can find no uninstall, either in the directory or in Add/Remove Programs, so I attempted to reinstall over the existing program. The installation program advised that the program I was attempting to install was already fully installed. The problem continues and I am unable to use Media Center 10.

Wondering which versions of XP can Access which other versions of XP.Specifically, can media center edition access media center edition , or do one or both OS's have to be XP PRO. My understanding is that XP Home cannot access or be accessed via Remote Access.

my system has been acting up today. I got home from class and tried to install my Microsoft Visual Studio, it asked me to restart after the installation. When I did, right when it got to the desktop it said something about a registry problem has been restored and the system has been recovered. Something along those lines. Getting back on the subject, 5 seconds after it reaches the desktop it crashes. Not a hard crash, just a restart, but it crashes none-the-less. Is there a way to get around this without reformatting?(I even tried running in Safe Mode, same problem.) I can't seem to find a way to fix it if I can't even get to my desktop.

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded latest windows update and rebooted as instructed. Only the PC kept rebooting itself continuously. When I stopped it with F8 and set it not to restart on errors I got a critical windows error message. I reformatted drive and reinstalled windows, all was fine for a couple of days, then here is the really wierd thing. I heard the fan spinning but neither I nor Lady Walsh had turned the PC on. I once again found it rebooting itself in a continuous loop. Seems it turned itself on from standby and corrupted windows again. I totally wiped the disc, reformatted both partitions and reinstalled windows. Did a full Norton antivirus scan which came up clean. But the same happened again yesterday. Anyone heard of a virus that can start your PC up from standby and reinstall itself ? And that can survive a disc fomat and windows re-installation? I'm running XP Sp2 on an AMD64 with 1 Gb RAM 120 Gb disc.

I have a Windows XP Pro SP3 totally updated.I switch on the computer and runs well. No problems are shown. At login screen I put my credentials, it starts to load my desktop and then, before anything can load appears a message saying this (or something like this):Explorer.exe must restart because it can load an application.I click on Ok and then nothing happens. I only see my desktop background.Well, I reset the computer pushing the button on the PC. I load Windows XP on fail-safe mode and login as Adminitrator. Everthing goes well. Then, I reboot Windows by software to start Windows as the usual way. Then, I login on my session and it works well, I have no explorer crash and I can work. But this is not the key to solve the error because it returns to happen.

First off, here are my computer specs (I like to get detailed): HP Pavilion a820n running Windows XP SP2
540J Pentium 4 HT, 3.20 GHz (1MB L2 cache, 800MHz front side bus)512 MB PC3200 DDR SRAM memory
200 GB 7200RPM Serial ATA hard drive.Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 with up to 128 MB shared video memory.Thats whats on the front of my tower. So, the title of this thread is self explanatory. I just turn on the computer and after it loads, after the desktop appears and right around when the desktop icons are loading, it just goes blank and restarts itself. Last night I did an error check for the hard drive, and it didnt come up with anything. I actually went to bed while it was scandisk or whatever, and when I got up, the computer was in its neverending cycle of resterting and crashing. I can, however, load it in safe modes, like with networking; that's what I'm using right now.

I have Windows Vista Business Edition; I know that I cannot install that version over Windows XP Media Center, so I was wondering if I can install XP Pro over Media Center without having to reformat, and then install Vista over Pro (also without having to reformat).

my OS went from Media Center to XP Pro and I didn't do it! Now I cannot (or computer cannot) access Common Files, among other issues. For example: Trying to open Common Files (to look for file referenced by Logitech install issue) results in error "C: not formatted". My computer probs all began with some auto update that restarted my computer; upon restart, error "Windows could not start because following file is missing or corrupt: C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM". Every time i start computer, it looks for mouse driver, then finds and identifies it then can't "find file specified" and default-directs to C:Prog Files/Common Files/ etc etc. I ran chkdsk, defrag, etc. Finally I ran sfc /scannow and was instructed to insert disk 2 of XP Pro, but I don't have XP Pro. I don't want to take up a whole lot of space with my issue; the above is the end result (so far) of much troubleshooting. And somehow an OS that started off as Media Center became XP Pro.

I want to watch tv and surf the internet from my television set. What is the best hardware set up for this? I have DSL internet connection and Digital Cable. I would consider changing everything in order to be able to combine both activities on one set. I also download videos (from Tivo and from the internet.) I am maxing out my storage in both.

Im debating on whether or not to get WinXP Pro, or get WinXP Media Center Edition. Besides the Media Center application that lets you manage your images, videos, etc., is there any difference? Because I might get a copy of MCE so i could hook up my 360.

I am working with my son to build a new computer. We need to decide which Microsoft operating system to buy / install. We have a new ASUS motherboard and an Intel Pentium D 3.4GHz (dual core 64 bit). We also have a PCI express 16 graphics card. His primary use is gaming and also MS office applications for school.I have pretty much ruled out XP Pro 64 because I am reading about lack of application and driver support, but open to input on this.We need to choose between XP home, XP Media center, or XP pro (all 32 bit). I am not particularly concerned about Vista upgrade, although I do understand the upgrade path from XP Media includes the full graphical interface improvements in Vista Aero, and the upgrade from XP Home does not.

I just bought a XP Media Centre, and I am having problems adding my music to it. It won't recognize albums - or the files. When I add my My Music folder, it adds it, but under Albums, all of my CDs are "Unknown Album". It reads the Artists, but then when I go into artists, it doesn't show the song files when I click on Albums or Songs.

I am currently running Vista but have begun having screen freeze and other problems. I have pretty much decided to install Windows XP. My question is does Windows Media Center come automatically on the XP installation CD or is this something that is separate? I have the reinstall CD's for Vista and there is not a WMC CD with it so I wondered if it was on the OS CD itself.

Now my problem is with SP3.As you can see in the title my current OS is Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition SP3 Integrated. However, I do not want SP3 as it is causing problems with my tcp/ip. What I'd like to know is if there's some kind of way I can remove this integrated SP3. I do not have it in my add/remove programs clearly as it is not manually installed.

So I just got the Xbox 360 COD special edition. There's an option to somehow connect your computer to your Xbox. The requirement is to go through the Media Center. Well, first time starting up the Media Center on my computer, and I'm not able to get the Media Center to open. I receive an error right on startup of the program. It ends up generating a crash report, and closes. I've take 2 screenshots of the error. The first screenshot is of the first error that comes up upon opening the Media Center. The second screenshot is of another error I get when I choose to cancel instead of clicking ok on the first error.
