View 8 RepliesHope I'm in the right category. I'm using an Acer Intel Celeron D, Win XP (Home Edition) and my file system is FAT 32. I've heard that NTFS is superior and I am thinking of converting it. I understand that once converted, it is irrevisible. Should I convert it to NTFS and in what way is it better than FAT 32.

Is it worth it to waste 90 bucks on a XP Home Edition OEM disc when I can just go out and download a torrent. I really don't feel like spending this money, which I can use towards Vista or other parts.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been wanting to purchase a smart phone or a pda, so I may review, answer emails and check internet sites while I am out of my home office. I have been told that pda's are slow. My current carrier is Cingular, and I do like the Treo 650 and don't mind paying $350 but the monthly charges are horrendous $45 for an unlimited data connect this is beyond your monthly voice charge. I am looking for alternative and I am willing to change carrier but don't know who to go with for less expensive charges. With technology where its at, I thought I'd be able to be constantly on, a la Dick Tracy through my watch.

View 7 Replies View RelatedTwo years ago I bought and installed a USB2 Card on my PC (Windows XP with SP2). Last week when I bought a new Printer (Canon MP 750), which uses USB2. When I connected, IT WOULD NOT WORK; but when I connected to a USB 1, IT WORKED, albeit with a message that"IT WOULD WORK FASTER WITH USB2" and inviting me to "clickhere" to find a suitable Port. I did this, of course, but was met with a message that"NO HI-SPEED USB HOST CONTROLLERS ARE INSTALLED ON THIS COMPUTER".

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC had 6 USB1 ports - I upgraded by adding a 2-port USB2 card, with a USB2 4 port hub. When I had XP Home, all was fine. I then crashed my hdd, so bit the bullet, got a new drive, and XP Pro and started again. The (Via) USB2 card was bought new, as was the 4 port hub - I have the driver CD for the card. According to System Manager, everything's fine, working correctly. But every time I try to use my USB2 memory stick in one of the 4 ports on the hub, it comes up with "This would work faster with USB2 - put it in one of the 4 unused ports", which is unmitigated b/s as it's already IN one of them - changing makes no difference.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was having a lot of troubles with XP PRO after a CPU failure, when I tried to do an XP installation Repair. It failed miserably and after a month of posting and searching for answers, I threw in the towel. I reformatted the HD and did a clean install. On the advice of a MS Tech, I downloaded SP3 and installed it first thing. After I got everything up and running with all the updates, I discovered that XP no longer recognizes my USB ports as USB2. I found some original drivers on the Motherboard installation disk, but it will not allow me to install them because my XP SP2 install disk is already supposed to have them. I tried removing all the USB drivers and forcing XP to figure it out, but no luck. It is an ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe with a P4 processer and an XP PRO SP3 Operating System.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've recently reinstalled XP on my PC using the recovery CD that came with it but I've noticed that the USB Host Controllers seem to indicate I only have USB1 and not USB2 like I had pre-reinstall. I've tried my hardest to locate them to no avail but stumbled across this which is for my particular PC but I am having a dumb moment and don't know how to revert to MS drivers. It's XP Home with SP3 installed.

Eventually I reset and the computer would not boot. I opened the case, removed the video card and was able to boot to XP Pro SP2. I had left the computer on overnight to render/burn a DVD with Sony Vegas.Once I got to the desktop, I found that networking was no longer functioning. None of my network connections appeared under "Network Connections". My onboard LAN (Realtek RTL8100) was no longer appearing in my device manager nor is my modem (not that I ever use it) or my firewire card. I don't know what else might be missing.I have a MSI MS-6533 Mainboard w/ Intel P4-1.6 GHz (Bought as barebones system).

View 8 Replies View RelatedI found out that suddenly all my hard drive-related activity weren't working right, like copying to and from the main drive were almost as slow as USB1 connection and hogged the CPU, only in kernel times whereas any transfer made between external drives, be they USB or Firewire, functionned normally. This malfunction came sometimes with grinding noises from the drive and after a while a system lockup with a blue screen that displayed two types of message, I'll have to look them up again but one mentions a kernel stack error. At first I thought of a hardware failure but this theory got dispelled after I reinstalled XP on another partition on the same drive and noticed everything worked normally. When I activate the old partition and XP install, the problem remains. I checked and tried to update the controller drivers but they all seemed to be unchanged and up-to-date.my config consists of XP SP1 French, on a Laptop with one drive - ask me for more specifics if needed.

The status window shows no IP address or subnet mask (i have them manually configured) at all. But when I go to properties, it has my configurations listed there. My wireless and wired connections are working fine, but the last time this happened I had to reformat, which I did last week and would rather not have to do that again. View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently (and reluctantly - I love Windows 2000) installed XP SP 2 on a partition. Everything is working okay, except: I cant get my Firewire drive to show up in Device Manager or Explorer unless it's turned on when I boot up. I normally keep it turned off, since it's a backup drive, and only turn it on when I need it. If I turn it on after booting, it will only show up if I disconnect the data cable (not the power cable) and then reconnect it.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmore precisely, what leads XP to decide what is removable and what isn't? Example: System 1 is a P4 built in a Shuttle SFF case with the provided MB; 1 SATA hard disk with three partitions, 1 DVD-ROM on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees two of the flash slots as removable storage. System 2 is an Athlon 64 built on an Epox Nvidia+ MB. 1 SATA hard disk (with two partitions), 1 SATA DVD-ROM (using a bridge adapter), 4 hard disks on PATA, 1 floppy on floppy channel, 1 multi-format flash reader on USB; the system sees _both_ SATA drives as being removable along with two of the flash slots. Either system properly sees an external hard disk on USB or Firewire as being removable.
