I was able to successfully install XP Pro SP2 (32-bit, I believe) and achieve dual-booting with Vista Home Premium (32-bit, I believe).
My problem is my XP OS doesn't connect to the Internet. I tried disconnecting my Linksys network adapter (WMP54G), installing using provided CD in XP, reconnecting the adapter, and booting XP up.It doesn't recognize the adapter still
I have a 3Com 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet Adapter card. XP Pro recognized the card and installed it automatically. The device is working properly. My cable modem Data light constantly blinks when there is a connection. The NIC acknowledges this and blinks with it (just as my other NIC did). I still cannot connect to the internet.
I am good with computers for the most part when it comes to PC troubleshooting, but I have very limited experience with network troubleshooting. I am assuming that there are settings somewhere that I need to manually change. Somebody at school said I had to do something with the registry. I would prefer to stay away from the registry if there is another option available.
I installed a wireless adapter, it worked for4 days , then XP gives an error that 'xpdoes not recognize the item connected to the usb and that it has malfunctioned. I replaced the wirless adapter 3 times and even went to another vendor and it still says that. It claims that there is no driver, but when I install the software it says the driver is there. IF I delete the unknown device, it puts a driver in but the unit will not even light up.
I ran a registry cleanup fromlinksys and it was suppose to get rid of all the drivers but it still does not work. I changedto Netgear and it does the same thing.
After reinstalling XP due to some corrupted files, the software works OK now, but it does not recognize my display adapter, NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX440-8X. In the Device Manager there is no display adapter listed, and I am having trouble operating my scrolling and dragging features. NVIDIA is made by ChainTech.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up my friends home network. They have 2 PCs connected via ethernet and one laptop on wireless. The router is a wireless router / modem from 2wire. PC number 2 and the laptop both connect with no issues. PC number 1 is weird though. I can go to 192.168.1.254 and it opens up the router system page and I can go through and change and view settings. However when I try to go to any websites it immediately goes to "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." I have tried netscape and the iTunes store and nothing can connect to the web. I have linux ubuntu on a Live CD and I can boot from that and it connects to the internet just fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to get a Zonet wireless 802.11g PCI Adapter work in my desktop with little success. I have wireless loptop presently working through a Linksys Router. I copied the internet settings to a jump drive and transfer it to the desktop. The desktop wireless icon showed that it made connection but when i tried to go online using IE IT ALWAYS show web page not found. Is there some other setting in internet Option or elsewhere that is suppose to be change or set for the adapter to get on line. Using the ethernet card in the desktop i can access the internet easily. but the wireless.... this is my sad story

And I installed a new XP Pro.There's a net adapter built into the mobo: 1394 Net Adapter. It says it's connecting, but when I go thru the wizard for either the internet connection or the network connection, it doesn't get read. The little screen moved halfway toward connectivity and then it gives me a new page. I thought I'd work around it by disabling it, and I installed a D-Link NIC. The computer won't even recognize the D-Link! The Device Manager says it's working properly. I called Comcast, twice, and they came to the conclusion after going thru various routines that my computer is not reading the 1394 Net Adapter.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP SP3 and I did some updates two days ago: I allowed a java update that was hanging around in my lower tray for a couple weeks, updated my adobe to the latest version and I updated to Internet Explorer 8. After having IE8 for less than 24 hrs, my husband and daughter said they didn't like it, so I did a system restore to three days ago and now I can't connect to the internet at all. From the small amount of research I've been able to do here at work, it seems that once you download IE 8 you can't revert back to a previous version? Could anyone tell me if that's true? I can't even open the internet options tab from the control panel to see if there is a settings problem.

Both my wife's downstairs computer and my laptop, upstairs, will connect to the internet just fine, but the desktop will not, even though it shows that there is a strong signal being received. I am running Windows XP Pro, version 2002, with SP2. The computer has an AMD Athlon chip. It used to be a Tiny computer, but after having a major meltdown, about two years ago, I took it to a repair shop, and they installed an ASRock I/O K7S41/K7S41GX motherboard, as well as a new power supply, so I don't really know what to call my computer, now. I have tried using System Restore, but it won't allow me to restore to a former point, no matter how far back in time I go. I started it up in safe mode, then ran AVG, but no viruses were found. When I go to Control Panel, then "Network Connections," it shows that the wireless network is up and running. Even so, I tried repairing the network, by right-clicking on "Repair," but got the following message: "Windows could not finish repairing the problem, because the following action could not be completed: Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed. For assistance, contact the person who manages your network." Unfortunately, that person is me, who is totally clueless

celeron 2.4ghz 224mb ram conexant soft 56k internal modem trying to connect to the 'net via tesco isp, device manager shows modem connected to com 3, only com3 dosen't show in the ports section of device manager. the problem is the modem tries to dial but then a box pops up with cant detect dial tone( phone line working correctly) the computer says the port is already in use(?). the modem fitted is the second one i've tried, with no success.
I'm dealing with the following issue:
- I can ping www.google.co.uk and recieve return with no packet loss
- I can use msn messenger
- I can ping my router and othr networked computers
- I cannot connect to web pages via IE7
- I cannot update AVG free - "connection to update server failed"
- The computer has been rebooted numerous times
- The internet is known to be working because I'm posting from it.

Got infect by a virus, virus was removed by Kaspersky. After virus removal both the 10/100 NIC and the wireless adapter, and the bluetooth have indicated that they are disconnected. However from device manager they show up as working properly, which they are not as I cannot connect to the internet and there is a red X on all three icons in the system tray. Hello I have a problem with my computer. A couple months ago I fried my motherborad and took it to COMpusa to be replaced and when I got it back only Internet Explorer, Trillian and AIM work. None of my multiplayer games will connect nor will Firefox or mozilla.
