Speed-up Log-in Tremendously?
Feb 10, 2003
If like me you've tried everything else and your log-in and log-off to XP is still tremendously slow then you might try this little trick. First, if there are any other users on your computer see if they have a similarly long log-in. If they don't the problem might be your roaming profile, which is a folder where XP stores your settings you can access them from anywhere in the network. Since these profiles can get really bloated(as in my case) and are not really necessary unless you log-in from different computers in a large network, you should disable it. Here's how:
1. Right click on My Computer, select the Manage option.
2. From the Management Console, select the Local Users and Groups option.
3. Double-Click on the Users folder that appears on the right panel.
4. Right click on the account with the slow log-in and select Properties.
5. Click on the Profile tab of the Properties Window.
6. Erase(but keep note a not of this) whatever path appears for Profile Path under User Profile and Local Path under Home Folder: LEAVE THESE LINES BLANK.
7. Reboot. Try to log-in into the problematic account, you should see a significant speed-boost, the computer might warn you once or twice that your Roaming Profile is not available, ignore it and it will go away, good luck!
Note: You also will not have your settings and files that a roaming profile provides across a network.

I have a 2004 Dell PC that has been virtually problem free until the past month or so. After updating my McAfee virus software, my PC speed and decreased tremendously. Just going from the account log in screen to the desktop takes from 8-10 minutes (yes, I actually timed it.) Opening IE and/or Outlook is lengthy as well, as both often take from 2-4 minutes to open and load for use. I have defraged the system as well as perform a disk clean up. It the computer just ready for the junk heap or could spywear/malwear be the culprit?

I am using a DSL connection with a maximum download speed of upto 2MBPS but i usually recieve it for about 1-1.5MBPS. I have tried using Download Accelerator softwares to increase my speed but wuth those some spam also come into my computer so i am not using it anymore. Is there any way by which i can increase my internet speed by doing some changes in Windows internally. Also while using sharing sites my speed tends to fall to about 45KBPS.

Is there a way in XP, or in BIOS on a computer running XP, to check the actual FSB speed? Is it indicated in BIOS? I have a vague memory of checking it once but I can't remember if I checked it on the machine or just read the number in the manual.
If BIOS, or another source on the machine, tells you an FSB speed, is that the actual current clocked speed, or is that some kind of factory standard number that the MoBo provides as a spec?
I'm having some confusion as to what my actual FSB speed is. The manual says it's 400 on some Dimension 2400 machines but 266 on mine, but I swear I read XP or BIOS telling me it was 400. If there's a way to check directly I'd like to do that.

I have a quick question. And thank you all by the way. Everyone is so helpful here! ( I am new oh and inexperienced at computers!) I want to speed up my computer. i was reading a book and it said there are some tools to help speed it up such as disc cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, and Chkdsk?? My computer is really slow so im trying to see whats wrong with it. I have done all the virus stuff. Oh and I deleted a lot of unused programs which I thought would make it so much faster and free up some space but when I went back under the C folder in program files, it was only like one less mb or gb whatever it is. haha cant you see im not that good with this stuff! Anyway, for disc cleanup... will that speed it up? I dont want to delete anything. Will it delete stuff? as for the chkdsk. should I do that to see whats wrong and what is disk defrag. Should I do that.

I have tried searching this forum and did some Googling but haven't seen a cure for this. I have a pretty fair amount of programs installed and my 'all programs' list is pretty long. The problem is it takes almost 30 seconds to scroll from the top to the bottom, which is annoying when I want to start a program that's at the bottom (or top) of the list. Does anyone know of a registry hack or something that can speed it up?

I was told by my norton tech that the reason my computer was running slow was the rams. He said I should upgrade to 2 GB, but my computer only has two slots and the one it takes can't go higher than 256 so right now I have two 128 mb if I put in two 256 mb ram will it run faster, will it be worth it? It runs real slow, and has been cleaned up by the norton tech.

I'm having lots of troubles with USB 2.0 support. My mother board is a ASUS P5GD2 Premium, which only has USB 2.0 ports but my Windows XP SP2 keeps popping up this error! I have some drivers, but they don't install because XP SP2 should already support USB 2.0. Maybe the cables that connect the USB ports are the problem.

My HP Pavilion 750n is running really slow online, and I have a high speed connection. It's not too bad when I'm not on the Internet, but websites open really slow, and some of them just quit before they even load. I was gonna run a registry cleaner, but then I saw on here that it isn't recommended! I was using Norton, but recently uninstalled that and installed AVG, which I ran as well as Adaware; neither found any major problems. I posted a HijackThis log a few weeks ago, but no one responded so I assume there wasn't anything there either. My used space is 19.1GB and my free space is 50.6, so I don't imagine that is the problem either. I'm running Windows XP. Any suggestions on how to speed this thing up, or is it just suffering from old age?

I have 2 computers, one is a HP laptop and the other is a desktop pc, and they are both running kind of slow. I've heard that installing more memory would help speed up the computer. I've been to a site where you can enter your computer model and they will tell you what memory is right for your computer, I have no problem finding out the memory for my laptop but I have a problem looking for memory for the desktop pc. It was a HP Pavilion 8655c but I installed a different cd writer and a dvd writer, upgraded the motherboard and upgraded from a Pentium 3 to a Celeron 4 processor, and I was told that this is now a custom built pc. I was told when I bought the motherboard that I could install over 4 mb's of RAM and I am currently running on 248 mb. How can I find out what memory that I need to install on this computer? I scan for viruses and spyware/adware frequently, and neither are installed on either of my computers. I have deleted the temporary internet files, uninstalled some programs that I don't use that often, disabled everything that starts at startup, and defragmented the hard drives. Other than installing more memory, what else can I do to speed up my computers? My laptop runs off of Windows XP home/512mb of ram/30 gb hard drive.
My desktop pc runs off of Windows XP Pro/248 mb of ram/1 hard drive is 30 gb and the other is 120 gb. If there is any other info you need to help me speed up my computers please let me know.

There is a website that I have been attending for 4 years now, in which you can play games, chat, ect ect. They have what is called a "Speed Test" to test your computer in many different areas (3-D, Text, Pixels, Math, ect.) that you can take for free, by just logging in as a guest. All you have to do is come up with a nickname, login, go to SINGLE PLAYER tab at the bottom left of your screen, click it, then go to the second or third to last game, on the bottom right of your screen, and click it (Greyish box).Up comes the speed test...Just click start (make sure you have everything closed out on the screen as it takes your computer through several speed tests)In no way is this some kind of promo or anything, its just a really COOL way to test your computer.

I've just uninstalled NFS:U2. When I tried to reinstall it, a problem occurred with the installation progress. 53% though the installation, it just stops. No message or signals, it just doesn't install past 53%. I left it for half an hour and came back but nothing happened. At one point it made it to 62% but the same thing happened.
