Desktop Wallpaper Offers My Pictures - Prevent 1st Choice Wallpaper
Jan 11, 2008The last thing I want ANYONE to see is My Pictures. Why is this damn thing offering THAT place as first choice for dektop wallpapers? I pointed it (browsed to) Windows/Web/Wallpapers but it STILL insists on my pictures included there! And there is no obvious, clear cut way to change it, I have to google all over the place to find the damn answer! Pure wasted time. to remove that place and prevent it from ever showing up as a first choice for wallpapers?

Aug 18, 2007I have a 27" Dell Monitor with a Radeon X850XT card. Never had a problem with it and this new problem has just come out of no where.All background wallpapers leave a big gap down the left hand side of my screen. The pic's are big enought o fit the screen resolution and if I choose a smaller pic and 'center' it in display properties it does not center..I have just updated drivers and no change.Have WINXP ser pack 2

May 9, 2006"You may be a victim of software counterfeiting" My ex received this message on her WIN XP PC a few days ago. Seems her copy of XP is not the real deal. She is not very computer literate and the PC was a hand-me-down from her nephew. Needless to say this scared the @#!!@ out of her and she is convinced the PC police are on the way to her door. I have a legit copy of XP Home that I no longer use or need and can give it to her when I see her in about a weeks time. But until then my concerns/questions are Is she on some sort of counter that might prevent her from using the PC before I can get there and install the legit copy of XP that I have?

My sons 2nd hand pc running XP is getting boxes with this message (You may be a victim of counterfeiting) there is also a 5 pointed starlike icon in the system tray which gives a yellow box with the same message ,when you switch on the pc there is a 16th screen box bottom right corner same message ,when you log in a 1/4 screen box comes up same message with buttons to resolve now(?) and resolve later,which by hitting resolve later allows you to log on and the pc seems to work fine.
It does appear to be from MS,anyone else encounter this? Whats the story? As well an unrelated occurance ,on the forum index for this thread when I run my mouse over the forum topics and get the little hint box that tells you a bit more I am getting in amongst the words (are you ready for this?) swastikas??? I do have a Japenese font called Kagijuuji that has swastika like symbols and it looks like one of these.
Microsoft's Victim Of Counterfeiting Warning
Apr 18, 2007I naively downloaded a Microsoft Program which checks whether you have a genuine copy of Windows XP. The results came back that I don't have a valid, genuine copy. The fix is to spend $149 to get a genuine copy. In the meantime I have 2 warnings that come up every time I turn on my computer: "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

May 31, 2006Apparently I purchased a counterfeit version of Windows XP Pro. Recently I allowed my system to be updated as I have have many times in the past. This time I was asked to accept a user agreement. I did not read the user agreement in details but I think it did mention something about this counterfeit check. Now I have a star that appears on my desktop and is constantly bothering me with a pop-up balloon that states "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting". I would graciously pay the amount they want for a valid license which is $ 149 but the problem is I read on their "win xp boards" that in most cases you end up having to reload their acceptable version of Windows XP. We don't have the time to start from scratch. In my opinion, Microsoft needs to do a better job policing who is a valid dealer and who is not.

Began to appear after my friend returned home; his adult grand daughter had cared for his home, during his absence. Also, wallpaper is now black. Had been 1 of XP's standard wall papers. I can change it to an XP wallpaper, but after reboot, black wallpaper. My friend is unable to find his XP Pro CD; PC built by a family friend a few years ago. There is no COA on the computer [ exterior and interior surfaces ]. From my research, I have learned that the XP PID is frequently noted as to have been black listed.

Sep 24, 2006I've been running a copy of XP for over a year that I purchased from newegg.com and it is just now telling me that my copy is not valid. I've been having some recent problems with my computer: one day I turned on my computer and tried to log in and it told me that my profile had become corrupt and that it was going to log me onto a temporary profile(ran very slow)... something along those lines. Decided to reinstall XP which fixed nothing, and then searched around online and decided to just make a new profile and copy my files over to this profile from the corrupt one. Computer ran very well for a while, until.
my computer to receive this error message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>/system32/ntoskrnl.exe. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. I reinstalled this file by accessing the recovery console.

Jan 7, 2007My desktop suddenly went the default XP blue and when i right clikc and go into the properties, the desktop tab is all disabled meaning i cant change it. I am running XP SP2. Before this happened i did find some malicious software on my pc that random installed itself from a website. I think this could have lead to it. Any ideas of how i could fix this? Jan 26, 2007I had a few adwares on my O.S. (win XP HE), but I managed to remove them all except for one little trace. I've tried many removal tools, but none seems to be helping with this last problem that is anoing me.I can't change my wallpaper. What actually happens is that when I try to scroll down the "Background" scrollbox at the "Display Properties". "Desktop" window.I believe it has something to do with policies, but windows xp Home Edition is very limited in what comes to policies and it has no editor. By regedit I couldn't find any policy key that would actually make me believe it was it. I already tried to google this issue, but I can't find anything concrete.The closest clue I have is that this was caused by a spyware installed to advertise a spyware software, which installed itself and changed my desktop wallpaper to a black image that said that I was infected with malware and I needed a spyware software to resolve the problem. The image also said something claiming it was from Microsoft and they suggested a product.

Jun 8, 2009I have a 2GB RAM + 2.5 GHz + nVidia Pro motherboard + Windows XP PC.
Everytime i start my PC, after loggin in, it just displays the wallpaper. NOTHING ELSE! No mouse right clicks, no windows button works! Cannot work on it AT ALL!
It seems like it has hung, but if i try a Cntrl+Alt+Del, the task mgr screen opens up and i can select a single program by "New Task" and run it! so, definitely there is a normal PC running behind that wallpaper!
Now, heres the frustrating part -
I have had this issue after formatting the PC for abt 7 times till now! the antivirus (tried all) run immediately after a format shows nothing now - and still the issue would crop up after 2-3 days again!
I am really terrified with this, seems like a major virun attack as my PC shows up behavorial changes each time coupled with the above issue!

I right-click on the desktop, select Properties, then select the Desktop tab. There is only one wallpaper listed in the Background list, as well as the (None) option, which works. Unfortunately, I can only switch between (None) and my current wallpaper. Browse works, in that I can search my computer for other images. But when I select any of those images nothing happens. The current wallpaper remains in the preview screen, and the wallpaper I selected through browsing doesn't show up in the Background list. (I can Center, Stretch and Tile my current wallpaper.)

Apr 8, 2008I have a HP Pavilion A1624N computer, running Windows Media Center 2005.
AMD 64 x 2 Processor 2.0 GHz, 1 Gig of RAM.
All of a sudden yesterday morning when I right clicked on my desktop and un-checked Show Desktop Icons (to take a print screen for my friend) the problem started. This worked fine, I did the print screen and saved it in paint no problem. But when I right clicked again and then chose Show Desktop Icons, they came back, but my wallpaper disappeared. Aug 20, 2005I've got some kind of spy/adware that has replaced my wallpaper with a big sign saying I've got spyware and to click a link to remove it. When I right click the wallpaper and select properties I don't get any of the normal options. Also, in the tray by the time (in the bottom right of the screen) is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark which periodically says I have spyware and launchs a pop-up. Furthermore, my internet speed has slowed right down. I've just run various spyware and adware programs and done a TrendMicro online check and deleted all the files it found, but the problem won't go away.
