SP3 Install Gets Stuck On Running Processes After Install
Jul 8, 2008
I just installed sp2 but forgot that there was a third service pack. Started the install sp3, 2 or 3 hours later. It appears to be stuck on the stage of "running processes after install". I have gone all over the internet looking for a proper answer to what I should do.I have terminated a few processes that are not needed at the moment. e.g. Google Toolbar something something, iTunes Helper and iPod service. I feel the solution is to end a certain process somewhere but have no idea which one. The cancel button is also grayed out and I am updating through windows update. The computer is not completely frozen. I can still open other windows and move the mouse.

How can I tell which processes don't need to be running on my machine? I think that may be some of what is slowing down my comptuer.

At any one time I have approx 60 processes running, even after just booting up my computer. Although I am not a computer expert, this seems like too many to me. I was wondering if anyone could help me by telling me if this definitely is too many to run at once, and if there is some way I can post a list of the running processes and have someone with more knowledge help me get rid of some of them.

Win Xp, Dell and cable connection When I do ctrl>alt>del, it shows 17 System processes running. Are all of these necessary? Also, some of the other running processes i recognize, i.e. firewall, IM, anti-virus, but some of them I don't have a clue what they are. Is there a list somewhere of what should/shouldn't be running necessarily?

During the update of XP with SP3, the install got hung up on the Beethoven sample in the My Music folder. After two fails, I went into "My Music" and deleted this music sample that originally came with XP, along with the other samples. Now these files are stuck in the Recycle Bin. these won't delete, and I get a message saying "Cannot remove folder Dc3 (or Dc2, Dc4). Access is denied." The files also won't restore back to the My Music folder, either. since I tried to delete them in the middle of the update process (I was getting an errror message whenver SP3 got to the Beethoven sample), that this somehow locked them out.

I made a computer from my brother, with parts from other computers. But windows won't install. When I put the CD in the drive, I will start the computer using the CD. It check my Hardware configuration and asks me to install a non-windows SCSI/RAID driver, I will not install this driver and I'm continueing as normal. This is when it goes wrong: when loading 'Windows Executive' (The first file it loads) the computer gets stuck.

At first i was able to get to windows setup (Blue screen) when i had the disc and partitioned to install the XP Disc. The computer restarted and i get to "press any key to continue (with the disc)" and i do so and it says "set up is inspecting your computers hardware" and then screen turns black and nothing appears. When i take the disc out it says "Error Loading Operating System". I can't really do much of anything now. Only screen i can get to is f1 to the "bios setup utility".I have an HP a450n.. Let me quickly start by noting that I have familiarized and comprehensively searched every forum for assistance on this issue, and have attempted multiple fixes for the following problem. That said, if anyone absolutely knows what my problem is, and if is addressed elsewhere, please direct me. If not, thank you VERY MUCH in advance for your help!History: 30 GB HD filled up on Fiance's Inspiron 1100. I purchased a compatible 60 GB HD, enclosure, and then I cloned the original HD to the larger one. Then, after restarting the computer with the original drive still in the case, the computer failed to boot. So, after attempting to fix the original boot issue, I physically installed the new, 60 GB HD with the cloned drive on it. The computer fired right up. I was elated. Then I ran defrag. Not a good Idea.Defrag crashed at about 40% complete. I attempted to reboot the computer, to no avail. The computer seems to boot fine, but then gets stuck permanently at the Windows XP loading screen. The loading bar moves, the mouse moves, yada yada. Nothing else. I CAN boot in safe mode, and access all my files (which i DID backup first). However, I want the damn thing to work, considering I just bought the new HD and the computer otherwise worked just fine.I ran CHKDSK from the recovery console, which found errors, but did no good. Then I ran CHKDSK /r, which took about 24 hours to complete. Errors found, some "unrecoverable," to no avail.I cannot access my system startup BIOS w/F2 (or any other key) during startup, no matter how early i start to tap the key. That is strange to me. Thus, I cannot boot from the XP CD.What do you all think my options are? The HD is physically OK, I think. The fact that safemode seems to function pretty flawlessly is a good sign, right?
I have read to use bartPE to correct the registry. I have read to reinstall (?) the BIOS. I am ready to re-format the HD and re-install XP, but I'm not sure how to do this, or if I can do this via DOS or the recovery console, as again, I cannot access the system startup settings to change the boot sequence.Again, at this point, is there a way to fix this? If not, can I sweep off the HD and re-install XP? How might I do that?

I'm running XP. I did an Ad-Aware scan and removed some tracking cookies. It also stated that I had 29 running processes. How do I find what is running to help speed up my PC, and also; which are essential? I have dial-up AOL. It's running like a horse-drawn computer. How can I get it up to at least steam-powered.

Does 66 running processes seem like a lot? I cannot seem to find a thread regarding this. (I'm sure there is, stopped looking after 45 minutes) It doesn't seem to slow my computer at all. I AM running quite a bit on here as far as spyware, virus scans, webshots, etc. It's also a media center 2004 computer with all the trim so there are quite a few windows processes on there. Even with AOL running, my computer is only using 430MB of RAM and I have 1GB.

What process(es) are absolutely essential to leave running for computer to operate? And if the DAW software requires a process to run for use, will it "launch" that process upon starting the program?I have 45 processes running right now when I boot normally. I'm thinking of partitioning C: drive to be able to boot into "audio" mode where all but the most essential processes are stopped and therefore all resources are dedicated to DAW software. Never had to partition a drive before, I figure it's not all that hard.

I went through all the processes listed in my task manager and I show 70 running.I checked them all out and most are "system" processes like svchost.ext and things like spoolsv.exe, etc.but a lot are for programs that I need running in the background (my virus software, mouse, keyboard, smiley faces don't laugh! and stuff like that) not to mention the programs I'm working in at the moment.I'm just curious as to how that compares to other XP users.how many processes do YOU have running right now? BTW, I have tons of memory so the all these processes never create slowdowns or other problems, so I'm not asking because I have an issue to resolve. This is simple a case of inquiring minds want to know!

I am trying to install Service Pack 3 on a friend's laptop that is running XP Pro. It has SP2 installed on it. The error I get is: c:/windows/system32/ftp.exe is open or another application using it (or something like that). I ran the task manager and could not locate any running process or application that is obvious using ftp.exe.I did find the file in the system32 folder...but that's it. I have considered renaming ftp.exe something else temporarily but it says I don't have authority to do so or that is maybe already running. I am running another virus scan on it now. The computer has AVG 8.0 on it for anti-virus. I have run lavasoft's adaware too. I have also tried to install this in safe mode, but that didn't work either.

I am running XP sp2. The other day i noticed that i hadn't had any new updates since April 08. I managed to turn automatic updates on, which told me there were 24 updates due, so i let them download and install, at the end it said updates complete and succeeded (apart from sp3), but straight away the balloon popped up saying there were 24 updates due - exactly the same ones that i had already installed. I checked add/remove programs and realised they hadn't actually installed. I have tried again wth the firewall turned of - didn't work. I have also changed BITS to automatic. Does anyone know how i can solve this please?

My PC has slowed down considerably, so I opened the Windows Task Manager and under "Processes" there are 101 processes listed. 53 of those processes are "iexplore.exe" The "Mem Usage" listed for these varies between approximately 14,000 K to 40,000 K. I have looked at the Windows Task Manager sometimes in the past and iexplore.exe certainly wasn't listed this many times. Should I end these processes, and if so, how can I keep this from happening again?

I get a virtual memory low so I check it out and I have DRWTSN32.EXE coming up under processes and it runs over 2500 processes of DRWTSN32.EXE which makes my computer extremely slow. I'm probably wrong but it happened earlier today and my friend told me to type in MSCONFIG in the RUN menu and go to startup and disable all of them because I was running too much, so I did and it worked. But after I had to restart later on in the day, when it came up and I clicked on my Spyware or something it the processes start coming back up and it was slow again. I'm not really sure what triggers it but when it happens I can't really do anything unless I reset it.

I just checked my running processes and I have three of them that are higher than they should be. I've defragged, I've checked for spybots and to see if I have any virus and everything checks out all right. I'm worried that these are so high and I wonder if there is some sort of software or something I can do to bring them back to normal. Here are the three:ashServ.exe 4,372 KB csrss.exe 3,044 KB smss.exe 464 KB
