So svchost.exe has been eating up a lot of CPU lately. Like 40-50%, at all times. Really driving me crazy. I have the Intel E8400 (dual-core), so even on occasions when it spikes to 100% CPU Usage, my system isn't locked up. However, this does degrade my performance in games quite drastically My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition (32-bit), Service Pack 2.

So I startup my computer and it works at a staggeringly slow pace.Using Process Explorer I've found that an instance of svchost.exe with only the Dnscache service is consuming my CPU.If I kill the process then the problem goes away. However, this seems to make other apps like Explorer do funny things, like take me off line constantly. Also, Dnscache (a Microsoft product) seems to be an important component of a healthy, internet-connected Windows XP. Anyone know how I can repair the Dnscache service.

Something weird has been happening on my computer. It's been pretty slow to start up (despite limiting startup programs in the msconfig), and when starting up, before my desktop fully loads, it comes up with a message saying "Personalizing settings for C:Program FilesCommon Filesmscd.exe". Sometimes it will stick there and not finish starting up, other times it sits there for a couple of minutes, then starts up ok, but slowly.
I also have had issues with browser history getting wiped out what seems like every few hours even though the internet settings are proper. The Google toolbar will keep track of forms info, but I'm getting logged out of every site, and the history is gone. SuperAntiSpyware Pro has found numerous entries for unclassified svchost.exe, and has been blocking them, but more keep popping up. It seems like every time I lose the browser history and run SAS Pro, another unclassified svchost.exe is found.
What can I do to fix this?

I have asked this before, but on startup, I have several processes named svchost.exe that run on startup. One of these is a network service and every time, this particular one uses 50% +/- CPU. Apps will not open, nothing will function correctly until this is terminated.

I have AVG and now I cannot receive emails unless I do a hard reboot of the computer. I can get the initial emails, but once the AVG runs the email scan, it times out and says cannot find the server.I have to hard reboot again in order to receive the emails. I have tried everything my limited skills allow me.This is frustrating.I am running Outlook Express for my emails, through Comcast.

"The instruction at "0xffbadd11" referenced memory at "0xffbadd11". The memory could not be "read".Click on OK to terminate the program."I have no idea what the problem could possibly be; it COULD be the work of some virus/worm/whatever, but I'm not sure. I'm using Windows XP Media Center on a Toshiba Satellite A105... I don't have a lot of options. Reformatting is not one of them. I have a lot (hundreds of gigs) of important files that I simply cannot lose just because svchost decided to crash one day.

Im running windows XP SP2 on a very new Dell Laptop. I was loading software and now I get an error about defwatch.exe.
I have added a screenshot below.
also, whenever i use the windows explorer it takes atleast 8-12 seconds to load so i can view my drives
I have done a search and get the idea that defwsatch.exe has something to do with Symantec Antivirus definition update. I do have the files on my pc but there is no uninstaller. I dont have the software loaded and It doesnt not appear in the add/remove programs index.
Also, what do those error codes/memory address in the message refer to?

Windows XP Media Center Edition w/ SP3.Every few times I turn on my computer, there will be an error regarding explorer.exe (something like the something failed to initialize at *some random letters and numbers*). When I then log onto any user accounts, including administrator, the screen will not load. I will sit staring at the wallpaper with no taskbar or desktop shortcuts. The only thing I can do is the *windows + L* to switch user and log out, or CTRL+ALT+DEL to get to the task manager. There will be an abnormally low number of processes running (in the 30's). I will have to restart the computer and hope for the best on my next try for the computer to load.
Also, a similar problem. Occasionally (1 out of every 4 tries or so), when one user is logged in and hits *switch user* (but stays logged in), no other users may load. When the other users try to login, they are instantly logged out to the blue login screen again. You can see the background for possible a half of a second before getting logged out. There is no error message or anything of the sort. These errors all have come up in the past few weeks. I am stumped and have no clue what to do.

I open the System Configuration Utilility, go to the "Startup" tab, click on a program I no longer wish to run at startup and get an error message stating: "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator Account to make the specified changes".I then click on OK to the error message and then the text box pops up stating the usual "You must restart your computer for some of the changes made by System Configuration to take effect". "Restart" - "Exit without Restart".

CHKdsk runs on startup for my C drive. 43% of the way through step 1 a "blue screen error" flashes on the screen and my computer reboots. This would continue but it fortunately gives me a step to skip chkdsk. Unfortunately the error message flashes by too quick for me to read. I have tried going into event viewer, looking under application and trying to find winlogon but it does not seem to be there. There also does not seem to be any entries under application, security or system for todays date. How can a view this error message? My computer otherwise works fine but I wonder if there's an impending problem...
I am using a 1.6 ghz dell with Windows XP

For the last 4 weeks or so I have been having problems starting up my computer. It freezes on the password screen, it automatically restarts, usually takes me about 4 attempts to get my computer up and running. Then, when I finally do get it going it gives me a message saying:
THE SYSTEM HAS RECOVERED FROM A SERIOUS ERROR
I sent off my error report and a screen opened up with a few recommendations, such as running diagnostic tests on certain softwares, and trying a system restore, which I did but to no avail.
