Picture & Fax Viewer Preventing Programs From Opening.

I am running Windows XP Home with all the latest updates. The computer started normal today. Then within a couple of minutes it rebooted itself. When I went to open certain programs the picture and fax viewer screen comes up saying "No Preview Available." I am unable to get into my Nortons Anti-Virus, System Restore, certain parts of my control panel, etc. I keep getting the same screen as if all programs are now being viewed by the "Viewer" before they can be opened. Some of the programs will open.

I've had this networked drive for photos going great for months. When I use the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, I can rotate clockwise/counter-clockwise and auto save on the spot.any ideas why? The properties an ALL jpg's are not read-only, File Sharing is still set to "allow network users to change files" - are there advanced sharing properties I should look into or do you think this is just another annoying MS bug? Very frustrating.

Better way to Delete Picture and Fax Viewer without any other effects.It can be removed as follows: [Start] [Run] type regedit.exe and click [OK]Navigate to delete the Folder ShellImagePreview under Context Menu Handlers. If you want to restore the Picture and Fax Viewer :Create the ShellImagePreview folder and create the String Value (Default)Assign it the value {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

It seems that whenever I view a picture it is saved in this folder, "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer". Where do I find this folder on my pc so I can delete its contents? And how do I prevent pictures from being saved in this folder?

By default, Windows XP opens all picture files (gif,jpg,...) with the included Windows Picture and Fax Viewer no matter what other picture viewers you have installed. To disable the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, unregister shimgvw.dll. This can be done from command prompt:regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll(Additional note: unregistering shimgvw.dll will also disable thumbnail view in Explorer and may cause problems changing user account and desktop background pictures. To reenable Picture and Fax viewer again type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll)

I cannot see the thumbnails of any file, and i see instead the generic icons for jpg, bmp, etc files. I associated all these files to windows picture viewer and i selected view->thumbnails, but the problem is that i cannot start this program.I tried with regsvr32 shimgvw.dll but it tells me load library("shimgvw.dll" ) failed. the system cannot find the specified file.

the default program for all of my pictures used to be Irfanview, I installed a new scanner and Adobe Photoshop was installed into my computer. now when I click on a picture it goes through the Adobe routine,
can I get the Irfanview program back as my default, when I click on a picture.
IM using winxp.

I get the F-secure Virus/Internet Security package from my ISP. When the WMF exploit problem with Windows software surfaced, F-secure automatically took me to their web site and directed me to an approved "workaround" until the Microsoft update was ready.The only thing I noticed when I implemented workaround was that I could no longer open a JPG file from Explorer. Previously, those files opened with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. I use Microsoft Fax from the Microsft Windows XP Home Edition. On my account the fax preview uses the Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer. I have added another user account to XP. When they use the Microsoft Fax, the preview uses Kodak software and I not seeing the way to change it to the Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer like it is on my account. Any help on getting the preview to use the Microsoft Picture and Fax

I want to open .jpg files using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and I have changed the file association to do that. The problem is, when I click on the "open image for editing" button, it opens Paint. I want it to open Photoshop. There appear to be no options (or any other) menus available.

Normally when you double click an image file, the default Windows Picture And Fax Viewer (I'll use WPF for short) program let's you view it. Recently, it's not working. I double click various images that showed up fine bef, but now nothing. It's like I'm Double clicking some empty space. Well, not quit empty space, as i do see the hourglass animation briefly when I do that, but previews in thumbnail and filmstrip mode are no longer there either.My pics are BMP, GIF, and JPG format. Pics i had before, as well as new ones I save using "save picture as" or via a screenshot utility canNOT be opend using WPF. The pics haven't gone corrupt

Sometimes I will highlight a range of photo files and open them into Picture and Fax viewer. I can then page through all the photos I selected. Occasionally though, I will load a range of photos into the viewer and photos from outside the range I selected get loaded into the viewer. When this has happened, I've gone back and reselected the range and tried it again and still get pictures loading from outside the range I wanted. Also, I notice on the viewer's print wizard that pictures/documents from outside my range of selected documents are sometimes presented for printing. Anyone know how that happens and how do you fix it?

I'm not sure how it happened, but all my files that I have set to open with Windows Picture and Fax viewer all display the "missing icon" icon. The one with the picture of a Windows 95 window on a white page. I figure the normal icon for pictures got deleted somehow, but I'd like to fix this without re-installing Windows if possible

i am basically the 'admin' of my family's computer, and my mom ONLY uses it for email and a web application for her work.the problem is, whenever she logs onto her user account, she gets bombarded with a ton of stuff (AIM, GMail notifier, etc.)is there any way to disable these programs from starting up on her account only?

Is there a way to just let the user access one or 2 program in Xp Pro. For instance, I only want my kids to access internet explorer and that's it. The rest of the Applications and those XP's goodies that are found in the Program are to be hidden. I only want IE to show in the Program or on the desktop. The rest are unaccessible and hidden.

On Msn Messenger, a friend sent me a file containing pictures. when i opened the file, my computer froze up, and than sent the file to everybody that was loggen in to msn. After running Multiple scans , Norton Antivirus coulnd find anything wrong. But my computer constantly freezes and send a file containng a virus to everybody online. I was told i might have a worm.

"If I look at my photos on my computer, I lose internet connection immediately. So I can't crop, alter pics while online either. If I click on a picture to save it on the net, I lose connection. Meanwhile, I open my itunes, play music and all is fine with my internet connection. I can have many windows going, etc etc but just can't open up any picture program.

I just sent a fax & when I tried to view it, fax console opened adobe photoshop instead of fax viewer. I installed adobe a few months ago & this is the 1st fax I have sent since then. APS is not clear & I don't like it for this function. I prefer windows FV. How do I restore the viewer to its original target (FV)?

When I came on the computer today, the first thing that came up was a warning from Lavasoft Ad-Aware telling me something about a regkey being modified and then it said Allow or Block. I figured it was a bad thing, so I clicked block and went on. My Firefox was working fine. However, when I went to open my iTunes, nothing happened. The only program working for me was Firefox. So, I restarted my computer and all of my icons to different programs showed up as errors (I don't know if that's the right word, but none of them would open). So, since I couldn't run any of my anti-virus programs to do a scan, I went online and ran the Trend Micro House Call scan. But, each time I do it, it gets to a certain point and then my taskbar disappears and I can't get it back.I've tried searching everywhere for a solution but they all require me downloading something which doesn't work since I can't open any windows.

After I am on the computer for a few hours usually, my computer flickers with different task. computer closes all programs, then opens up Start Menu, then opens up like 2 or 3 programs, then closes, it does all this within like 5 secs, i mean it does it very fast...it keeps on opening and closing different programs simultaneously. Then only way i can stop the programs from opening and closing and my computer from flickering is to press CTRL+ATL+DEL.

My computer started acting like it was possessed! The numlock and scroll lock keys beep and light up on and off continuosly; if I try to open any Windows programs, ALL of the Windows programs start to pop open all over the desktop; it won't even dial the internet connection, so I can't get online. It won't go on standby by itself, and if I choose standby on the shutdown menu, it goes into standby for about 5 minutes and then goes back to the desktop, even after I've logged off!
I am able to open any games or programs that aren't Microsoft without other programs popping open, but the numlock and scroll lock keys still flash and beep all the time.
I have Earthlink ISP and use their anti-virus, pop-up blocker, spyblocker, spam filter, and firewall, along with Ad-aware and Xoftspy. No viruses or spyware are found when I run them.

My computer has a constant delay opening programs for the first time. For example, I'll open Internet Explorer (or any program) and my computer will take 30 minutes to open it. While it's doing that, I can hear my computer "working" which sounds like a grinding noise. Programs on either my C or D drive do this, so it doesn't seem like a problem with my hard drive. I can't do anything (or very little) while it's opening something. Task Manager won't open, for example. I've done a spyware/virus check and there is nothing. It's not a slow computer. It has 1gig of RAM and more than 2.6Ghz. This didn't use to happen.

When I try to do several things (such as click Settings/Control Panel/System or Settings/Control Panel/Add Remove Programs) I get the DOS shell window flash for 1/8 sec or so and nothing else. If I read correctly this is flashing an error message too quickly to read or something along those lines.. I'm guessing this was caused by a program I used to overclock my system a while back or one I used to customize some setting or other and I don't remember exactly which one.

Toshiba Satellite M45-S355 has started opening up programs without me. All of a sudden, while working in one program, another just pops up as if I'd clicked it but I didn't. I've run Norton's AV; SpySweepter; XOftSpySe; and Ad-Aware and it's still happening.

My problem is that sometimes, when i have enough programs or firefox windows opened, i cannot open any more programs, right click on the desktop, or ctrl+alt+del. I do it and nothing happens. Its like i run out of ram. I have to close down one program to open up another. I have 1gb of ram. I dont think its a ram problem because most of the time i can open way more stuff and not expereince this weird effect. The only way to fix it is to restart my computer sometimes.
