View 14 Repliesmy cable is not working properly.Every 15-20 minutes my internet connection is broken even though the modem is online and there is no problem with the cable coming into my house. I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

I'm running zone alarm free firewall, avg anti virus and ad ware filter. i know i can do something with win sock but im don't know how to do it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on the HP laptop, I see the IVENT logo, then the screen goes dark for 30 minutes, then boots completely to reveal Windows XP. I can use the cd/dvd drive but cannot connect to the internet. There is a warranty, but Best Buy advises there are no hardware issues. They said re-loading Windows would fix the problem. I have performed all the restore and windows trouble shooting start-up fixes and those do not work. However, under device manager, the 1394 adapter "has a problem" and there are yellow ? under Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio controller, Network Controller, PCI Device, PCI Modem, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible)and an exclamation pt under SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller.

Does anyone know how to fix it in XP?
XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer is connected through the internet through a router and dsl modem which have worked in the past.During the past two days the internet connection has deteriorated on the XP computer but has stayed the same for the win98 computer eliminating suspicion from the isp.Downloading files for updates, logging into websites etc. is not working unless connected directly to the internet through the modem and sometimes that doesn't even work.I tried running the Norton Anti-Virus scanner but it said it was missing components and when I tried to reinstall the installation failed. I was luckily able to download a free scanner from the internet and ran it on reboot and found 53 various Trojan files infecting to be what i thought useless files. After the scan and deletion the internet still does not work. The problem is i can't repair internet explorer because everything on XP is integrated with the internet and getting updates from the internet is impossible, even system file checker doesn't work without access to the internet.A viable culprit in my mind would be the Norton Internet Security program that comes along with Norton Anti-Virus, which changed internet settings on installation and in the past would not allow the internet to work without it at least on and disabled.I am also missing the .dll files iecont and iecontlc.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is weird and perplexes me and everyone I ask: My computer doesn't have anything that seems like a major performance problem, but it does one funny thing. I have SBC Yahoo DSL and use the modem and ethernet card they sent me, as well as a Linksys Ethernet Firewall Router. (I only have one computer; the router is just for security.) What's weird is that every time I boot my computer, there is a better-than 50% chance that there will be no Internet connection. When I look in Control Panel under Network Connections, there is no ethernet card listed except one called "1394 Connection".

My internet was working properly until a couple of weeks ago when it just stopped working. My internet connection says imited or no connectivity and packets are only being sent not recieved. I have connected my computer directly to the modem so it is not going through the linksys hardware at all and there is still no connection. I have checked all of my computers hardware and it says everything is working properly. Also I have made sure all the drivers are updated and working properly.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just put a new 250GB HDD in an Intel D865 GLC motherboard with a 3GB Pentium cpu, but I can't get online! And I installed a new XP Pro.There's a net adapter built into the mobo: 1394 Net Adapter. It says it's connecting, but when I go thru the wizard for either the internet connection or the network connection, it doesn't get read. The little screen moved halfway toward connectivity and then it gives me a new page. I thought I'd work around it by disabling it, and I installed a D-Link NIC. The computer won't even recognize the D-Link! The Device Manager says it's working properly. I called Comcast, twice, and they came to the conclusion after going thru various routines that my computer is not reading the 1394 Net Adapter.

But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. If I open a new window, it's opens a blank white window with nothing in the address bar. If I try to type in a website, it will appear to load it, yet nothing happens.I have MSN Messenger set to run when windows starts, and it does connect. However, it will shortly 'die' as well. If I try to reconnect to it I get an error. When I ran the troubleshoot for it it said the problem was in the 'key ports'.There is an old game that I frequently play. The odd thing is, it works perfectly. I can load it up and connect to it without a problem.

Recently moved and had a DSL connection of 3 years no problems. Had to switch to cable broadband. The lights all light up solid no problem. Network cable connected to no problem. Problem : NO internet
Unplug netowkr cable from cable modem (get the network cabled unplugged in windows, so it is seing the modem or atleast talking to it)Tried using the windows xp network srtup wizard. I did that hub one (connected thourhg a hub) and i tried the direct connection (goes from modem to computer).
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a number of XP computers (all SP2) connected to the Net via a wireless modem/router. Everything was fine until a few days ago when my connection speed dramatically slowed after being online for a few hours. This happens to all of the PCs in my home - so it's nothing internal to my PC. I tried to transfer a large file across the wireless network and it transferred fine (5Mb in 10 seconds). I can also connect to the router's web management software without problem. So it's not the wireless connection. Which leaves either my modem/router or my broadband connection. The router's "DSL" light is always on which infers that my broadband connection is OK. So that leaves my modem/router.
Im running Windows XP. I've encountered an extremely frustrating problem. My computer takes several minutes, sometimes a half hour, to do ANYTHING except open My Computer and the Explorer. Now I've looked at several posts on this site and I've tried things like CCleaner and Ad-Aware (which pretty much freezes my computer now whenever I turn it on) and neither of these have solved the problem.
