From other people's experiences (not what the package says), I was wondering what the minimum requirements for running Windows XP Home. I have a 900 MHz computer, 256mb ram, 80G hard drive currently running Windows ME.

I did a google search for this and i get microsoft telling me that windows xp requires 1.5g of space to install.
i have it on a 5g drive, and it has bloated itself beyond proper functioning. Is 10g enough or should i go to 50g? I do not install program files on this drive. or my documents. or my images. or anything else that i can possibly put somewhere else.
I inherited a hard drive'that someone tried to install windows 2000 with out verifying the hardware requirements. I can boot to 98 fine but would like to give this PC to a friend. it does not bother me much but i do not relish getting calls every time he reboots the machine and he gets the BSOD when windows 2000 tries to install. I have tried booting with a 98 boot disk and typing sys C:. so I can remove the boot.ini etc but, it says invalid drive letter. When I try and switch to the C: I receive the same error

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm stuck have a friends XP machine that is behaving oddly. When it boots, in normal or safe mode, I receive a dialog box once the user selection screen is displayed with the title "virtual memory minimum too low". Then an explanation that XP is going to re-adjust it. At this point everything is hung. At the time I got the machine, there indeed was only 200M left on the C drive, but even when I expanded the partition and gave it 25G free, I still get the message.To make matters worse, I can't seem to boot any CDs in the drive so I have to work on the drive on my machine.This also means I can't boot an XP disk to do a repair/re-install. Was it really low and now just can't get past the message even with the expanded drive?

I also tried to install Microsoft Office Word 12, it came up there is not enough memory on your disc space to run Word. I got fed up and was going to delete some old Microsoft Updates but instead deleted as many temporary files I could and cookies as well.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am thinking about giving an old Fujitsu lifebook B110 a new lease of life, I have it since new and although it's old I am quite attached to it.It has a Pentium 233MMX processor, and 160MB ram.It currently runs Win98.The hardware meets the minimum specs for XP, but seriously, would it be usable? Or would it be like watching paint dry? The most it would do is a little light web browsing and maybe some email.Also, I wonder if XP home would be any less demanding than say, Pro?

I have Microsoft Windows 2000 and the following settings: total paging file size 205 MB; minimum 2 MB; Recommended 190 MB; Currently allocated 205 MB; current registry size 21 I'm not the system administrator so I can't change these numbers. I also couldn't find the pagefile.sys that someone suggested looking for. My IT guys don't know what's wrong; they reformatted my computer but I got this error message again. If I restart the computer and go into the bios it does not show the hard drive but when I come out of the bios it then boots up.It will only bootup if I go into the bios first?

The only one I have it the recover cd, but it is my understanding that if I use the recovery cd that I will erase everything from my computer and I can not do this.I tried to read the other threads about the same problem, but to be honest I do not understand them and I just do not have the startup cd - maybe it is the same as the recovery cd?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 2 hard disc system, Windows XP pro and most programmes run from the C Drive. A few, plus all my data run from the F drive. Over the last few days I have encountered a massive slowdown in getting the computer started - form certainly less than 5 minutes to over 20 minutes. I have not added anything to the autoruns at all.
Programmes and data (eg music) run fine if they are on the F drive, but if they are on the C drive they run incredibly slowly so music is fragmented and at times its like trying to wade through treacle to get anything done. I have been getting crashes of the PC with a message about a kernel problem... but haven't yet copied all the data from that to get the detail. When it crashes the next boot reports a disc boot system failure, when i reboot ahgain it loads up but painfully slowly. The C drive was defraggged just afew weeks ago. I'm thinking the drive is about to pack up....
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.
View 10 Replies View Relatedi rescently had to format the drive for a fresh copy. I have installed xp home retail version and realised i wanted to try something diferent. At system start the computer starts up prior to the windows boot screen and displays COMPAQ in big bright bold letters with option of F10 for system restore which is no longer on system (reformated) as well as other options for boot select pres ESC and F1 for setup.Can i remove this from my system? and then can i create a menu with 2 options 1 load windows normaly and 2 install a disk image stored on a hidden partition? maybe like the F10 key assighn that to access the imge and install it.
I am trying to use the system restore function on windows XP, but every time i select a restore point and the system reboots, it says that the restoration was incomplete and "no changes have been made." I have tried multiple restore points. Microsoft.com suggested that i verify that the task manager, WMI, and system restore services were running, and they are. I also tried disabling my antivirus program, but the same thing happens.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHad problems with virus, couldnt update Virus or Malware Protection. I did full shred System Recovery from partition ( HP- A1130N -Windows Media Edition- Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Dowloaded AVG Virus and ran scan, all OK.Went to MS Dowload center and downloaded and installed 87updates to include IE8,started computer, all OK. Then updater said needed to download SVC Pack 3- took a loooooooooooooong time. THEN COMPUTER WOULDNT START- tried the two options it gave me but no go back to same black screen with boot options-- regualar- last working point- safe mode etc. no go.
At this point I did a full System Recovery again and downloaded virus protection again.
I'm running a Dell XPS 600 with Windows XP Professional Media Center Edition. Well, OK, it's not really running.I used System Restore to return my PC to a point about six weeks ago when the system was more stable. The PC rebooted, and now it won't boot any more due to a missing/corrupt CONFIGSYSTEM file.It won't boot from either of my CD drives, either. I've used the boot Setup to alter the boot sequence but that doesn't help, the system just doesnt recognize those drives during boot. For this same reason, I've been unable to access the Recovery Console.
