View 1 RepliesI was using my computer, when suddenly my Internet connection dropped. I tried reconnecting it, but it didn't work. The network icon on the taskbar disappeared. I went to Network Connections, and my connection wasn't there. I couldn't get the connection back. I've scanned my computer for viruses, but nothing came up.

I went to the notification area where you can choose to place the icon on the taskbar, but it's greyed out and I can't change the gray so that I can highlight. The compaq people have me uninstall a driver and that didn't help. We selected default setting s and that didn't help. I found instructions on Microsoft.help but they work only if you've got the cd. My Windows XPHome ed. was preinstalled.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't get my volume icon to appear on the task bar, although I have created a short cut to sndvol32.exe, and that will control my volume. In addition, going to the control panel, Sound and Audio Devices will not cause it to appear on the task bar. This is a difficult problem that I have worked on for months One source suggested conducting a repair reinstall of the Windows XP Media Center Edition software. I have made some registry edits previously, and this may be part of the problem.

When i double click on it the click on properties, "This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer".There is one other in the building connecting to the internet - but theres not meant to be any inter-pc networking going on.In the meantime - since first discovering the above - when i now click on 'internet connection' it wont display.

I have to reset the cable modem and then it works for another 10-20 minutes until the next cut. Ive had this problem before (last time i changed computers) but cant remember how it was resolved. I already talked to my ISP support but these guys are brain damaged or something and cannot even comprehend my problem and all 3 actually concluded that i had somehow contracted some killer virus immediately after connecting my computer and this virus was the root of my problems

to create their dialup connection to the internet, I couldn't.I went into the 'Internet Connection Wizard'. Told it that I was connecting directly to the internet. Then I told it I was going to set up the connection manually. But whenever the option comes up to setup a dial-up or broadband connection, the dial-up option is greyed out and unselectable. In device manager, it shows my modem as being fine. My mother has recently had problems with her pc and i wont bore you with the details but I've managed to sort it out and it seems to be running fine now. However the network connection icon has disappeared. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP and I think I may have a problem. In my task bar I have aan icon that is a red sphere with a "X"n it. I keep having a balloon that pops up saying my "computer is infected" and to use a special spyware tool to remove it. It also says "Windows will download the most up to date antispyware for me and to click on the Icon. When I click on the Icon, nothing happens. I've run "Ad-Aware SE" and still have the "Balloon". This balloon keeps popping up very often and I "x" and it disappears for a little bit and reappears. I also have another balloon that says updates are ready to be downloaded. I click on it and Windows Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard comes up to be installed. When I try to install, it says installation was unsuccessful. The "computer infected" balloon really bothers me the most and I would like to know how to correct this.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.

Except sometimes, I bring the computer out of standby and start the dialup connection as usual, but the connection icon does not appear. Is there something about standby mode that cause this, or am I doing something wrong?
