How To Delete The OS On Laptop?
Oct 20, 2008
I am selling my laptop, and it is running Windows XP. How do I (fairly new at computers) delete the whole entire thing so that I can reinstall using my OS CD. There are some funky viruses and I want to clean out all data and passwords so that whomever buys it has a clean start.

The display comes up at a reduced screen size and I have to go into Display Properties Settings and change the resolution up (which causes the screen to fill the display) and then set the res back to what it was (1280x1024). There are two monitors showing:
1. (Multiple monitors) on Dell 8200
2. Plug and Play monitor on Dell 8200
Number 2 is listed as inactive
I would like to delete the multiple monitor feature completely since I will never be using anything but the laptop monitor now. Any help would be appreciated.

I bought a laptop from someone. Dell 6230S. It has windows XP sp2. I reloaded Windows and made myself the administrator. The person who had this before me has a group of files, lets call them JONAH (not real name) about 1/2 GB in size and I can't delete them!! Actually I've managed to delete some but not all. Jonah is about 1/2 the size it used to be. They're located in C:documents and Settings and they contain all his old files including his windows files, my documents etc. I've tried deleting from safe mode, I've tried using KillBOX (in and out of safe mode and on reboot), I've tried unchecking "READ OnLY" and I still can't do it. This is quite a bit of space so I want to reclaim it. I'm using NTFS.

I have a very large, corrupt disc image on my hard drive that I want to delete, but every time I try to delete it Windows displays the message "Cannot delete 'filename': it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." The disc image is not mounted with any program, and hasn't been for some time. I tried aborting random processes that I thought might have something to do with the file, as well as restarting. No matter what I do, there seems to be something using the file. Are there any tricks to getting around this so I can delete it? Can I check, somehow, to see what program is using it?

When I start up whether in SAFE Mode or Normal I automatically get the Confirm Delete Message. This applies to programs, icons, photos, documents , folders etc - I cannot get to any of my work to back it up. I have tried Stinger -F-Force and W32.Blackmal@mm Removal Tools. Ran a full AVG scan with uptodate anti virus and Adaware Spyware. Sorry forgot to mention other things tried. The Pop up message does not appear in the Task Manger either as applications or processes. Each time you respongd NO to negate the delete it pops up again. There is no way I can get to any of my folders or files to burn to a CD as backup without the Confirm Delete message.

I am attempting to clean out my temp files on my Windows XP Home. The files and folders that I am addressing are: C:WINDOWSTEMP*.* *.OLD *.CHK *.BAK ~*.* _*.* and MSCREATE.DIRI have managed to clean all but one, which is _*.* When I run the search, I get the result of 144 files. I click on edit, select all, then file, delete. I receive the following error "cannot delete file: Cannot read the source file or disk" (please view screen shot). When I right click, I have no delete option, just "open containing folder, copy, and extract. (please view screen shot). I have run AdAware, Spybot, Ewido, and Avg Free. I also have CCleaner, Easy Clean which I have run. I have also used "Move On Boot" by putting the file path in the MOB window and try to have MOB delete the file. MOB says the file will be removed on the next boot.

My laptop died and I removed the hard drive.I hooked the hard drive up to my new laptop via a SATA/IDE cable.I can see the old hard drive in the E drive and it appears that all the contents are there by the size of the hard drive (same as when I had it in the old laptop) but I can only see, actually view, a very small percentage of the drive. My goal: I want to transfer all old music, word documents and photos from old laptop into new laptop.

I replaced the hard drive on my Dell Inspiron 8200 and reinstalled XP Pro. My first attempt didn't work and I installed the OS a second time. Now when I start up I get a screen that asks me which OS I want to start in (both choices are the same - Windows XP Pro). If I select one of them Windows boots normally. If I select the bad version my system won't boot and I get an error message stating there is a "disk hardware configuration problem". How do I remove the second (bad) version of the OS so that I don't get this choice and the system will boot automatically?

All of a sudden, I am having trouble deleting the odd icon/file. It has been solved partially as someone recommended a prog called "Move on Boot" and what happens is that when I r/c>>delete>>and am yold I cant as someone is using it, I c/o Move on reboot and after reboot, I can delete it. This is not the proper answer so I ask if anyone knows what might be causing this.

I've been given a laptop (dell latitude l400) which has had the hard drive wiped clean. All i have is the floppy drive. When i run the XP boot disk, i get an error message of ' bootinfo.inf', whereas when i run a 98 boot disk it does at least get further but stops at the C: prompt but cannot get anything else to work.
I have run a Dir check and found that all the hard drive recognises is the command file. Also i have tried an external cd drive but cannot get the laptop to recognise it.

The problem I am having is the home addition that is in-stalled on my computer right now was installed using a retail disc that incuded SP2. I have a older up-grade copy of Professional but It does not have SP2 included on it. Is there any way I can delete SP2 that is on my Home edition right now so I can up-drade it to Professional and then I can download the SP2.

I just left it that way for years but now I am having problems with one of the copies and would like to remove it from my system. Does anyone have the fix? Needless to say I'm not real computer savvy.
