Dual Startup - Fresh Harddrives
Apr 5, 2006
here's my problem and how it was caused:Whenever I start XP it gives me a choice on startup, as if it were a dual boot machine, to load Windows XP or (here's the kicker) Windows XP.Here's how it started. This machine had two hard drives on it, one of which was completely empty save for some personal files. I decided to put this drive in another computer, so I needed to put another copy of XP on it. I did this while both hard drives were in the same computer, took the fresh hard drive out to put to later use, then tried to start the original computer up.

I have done a fresh installation of XP Pro SP3 but my firewall (Sygate) and the Wireless icon (in the toolbar) takes about 1 minute to load/show up. Prior to doing the fresh install, these used to come up/display immediately. I have the latest windows updates (i guess as of a few days back). Some details which might be useful:Actually before it share the details may i request a freeware which allows capture of text from dialog boxes. I have tried ctrl+C and vaguely remember someone sharing a tip sometime back about some freeware for this... Lesson learned. Should bookmark things or download them to a safe folder rather than temp Am using WZC though i have installed the latest driver from Intel's site [Intel (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (driver version used is 13.1.1.1] Do not have any junk in my start-up other than Sygate and anti-virus.

I just upgraded my system a couple days ago and have been having several issues. First, Vista wouldn't recognize my onboard sound and LAN from a fresh install No available drivers, go figure. So, I had to install two copies of Win XP SP2, and then upgrade one of them to Vista. A pain, but the only way I could get everything to work properly.
I got everything where I wanted it, life is good. Then I'm booting into Win XP and I have two identically named Win XP OS's in the bootup screen. So as not to confuse my wife, I went into the Startup and Recovery options menu (Again this is in XP) and deleted, what I thought, was the XP I used as an upgrade to Vista. Turns out I got the wrong one. Now I can't boot to XP, but Vista is working fine. Basically, when I choose "Earlier Versions of Windows" I get HD activity for a moment, but then everything seems to halt. No responce from the keyboard, so I have to do a Hard Re-Boot.

My friend is trying to install Windows XP on his computer, but he keeps getting the message"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3."He has 2 IDE hard drives, one set as a Master and the other as a Slave, and both are connected properly. His BIOS picks up the hard drives, but XP can't.

I have my Windows 2K and Windows 98 PC running fine. It brings up a startup option and I select the option that I want. My problem is that the software that I am running needs to run from the Windows 98 start menu option number - 5. command prompt. At present when I want to run the software I need to firstly choose the Windows 98 option from the menu and then try to hit F8 really quickly so that I can run the command prompt. Is there any option that I can write in the boot.ini that will force the Windows 98 Boot Partition to show me the startup menu instead of having to hit F8 really quickly.

I recently brought a laptop with XP Home preloaded, but as I had a retail CD of XP
pro I thought I'd boot from that CD and run setup which includes a full reformat.
I now have XP pro up and running, but I get an annoying "dual boot" screen giving
a choice of XP pro and XP home! How can I get rid of this dual boot screen as XP
Home no longer exists?

I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.
I will try to explain the process on what I did so it can help you experts figure out this dilemma that I'm having. My old drive an IDE 100GB IBM primary drive was partitioned into 3 parts: c: 30GB FAT32 primary d: 30GB FAT32 " e: 30gb FAT32 "

I have been trying to install Windows XP as a second OS as I already have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Unfortunately, after I select a partition, format it, and reboot the system stalls on the screen after the BIOS that has something to do with a list of devices and such. After 10 or so seconds a few characters and letters go blank randomly on the page. I rebooted and selected my cd drive as the boot device and accidentally didn't press a button in time to boot and a bunch of highlighted numbers were thrown all over the screen and a random smiley face on one of the lines.

I'm trying to dual boot 2 different installs of xp pro from 2 drives using the Windows boot loader. I've edited the boot.ini every possible way I can think of, but nothing works. I've done this plenty of times using a linux boot loader or dual booting from a single drive but I cant figure this out. I haven't been able to find any reference to this subject anywhere, but I think it would work. Anybody have a clue as to how to do this? I know I can use a different boot manager to accomplish this, I just wanted to make the Win boot.ini work. Or, does anybody know of a good boot manager if I cant make this work?

I have dual booting on my PC with Vista home premium on a 500 Gb SATA disk and XP Pro on a 250Gb SATA, both internal. Vista no longer holds terrors for me and I'd like to get rid of XP and regain better use of the 250Gb HD. Can I just remove XP from the control panel in the XP boot or is it a lot more complicated?I don't really want to re format the XP drive as I'd have to transfer a lot of data and files

I have Win XP home installed as OEM software on the C drive of my PC.
I also have this OS as a Norton Ghost file supplied with the PC as a
"Recovery CD".
I have installed a second hard drive designated "D"
This all works fine.
I wish to install Win 2000 (which I have on a Microsoft cd) on the second HD.
I would then hope at boot - up to be given the choice of which OS to load.
Can anyone tell me what is the simplest way to do this?

I want to do a fresh install of MS xp pro. The problem is I have a newer version of xp installed right now and the xp cd i have is a older version( legit cd). Because of that it won't let me re-install xp using the older cd. I do have sp2 just on a different cd. So how can I go about doing a fresh install? The reason i'm doing this is because my computer is running sluggish and I want to start over sort of speak. Any ideas what I need to do? I have the bios to boot from cd. I also get a error message that the NTLDER is missing. I've been on other forums and so far no help from them.

I've been trying to reinstall a fresh, liscenced copy of XP (sp2), but when I get the windows disc to boot, my keyboard won't work. I've tried to keep in both the usb port and to use the adapter to stick it into the dedicated keyboard slot - no luck with either. Do I have a driver issue? Under admnistrative tools/computer management/keyboards/hid keyboard device/driver/driver details, I have two different driver entries: the highlighted one on top says WINDOWS/system32/DRIVERS/kbdclass.sys and the unhighlighted one below it says WINDOWS/system32/DRIVERS/kbdhid.sys. I seem to remember adding or updating my keyboard driver at some point, but I'm not entirely sure. Can I/should I restore the kbdhid.sys driver, and if so, how do I do that exactly? Do I have some other issue? A USB driver issue perhaps? I have a number of different usb drivers as well.
As a corollary, when booting with a bootable disc (the XP disc and with my BIOS set to boot from disc first), the program asks to hit any key to boot from disc. With my keyboard plugged in normally (to the usb port), I get no response at that stage. Using the adapter, plugged into the dedicated keyboard spot, I CAN get a response, but then get no response (from either usb or dedicated keyboard connector.) when the XP disc boots up to the blue option screen. My computer knowledge is adequate but not extensive. I did build my system, but it was my first build.

I recently got some virus which kept on duplicating, so my AVG antivirus could not permanently delete. So I did a clean reinstall of Windows XP Pro 32 bit with a full reformat. It is still very buggy. Some of the bugs even resemble the errors I was having before the reinstall. There were things like "could not load cmd.exe", AVG antivirus marking almost every Window's .exe as a Heur virus, "could not load login because of data execution prevention", and programs like Windows Media Player 11 and Visual Studio not being able to be completely installed.
Should I be concerend that this is a hardware issue? The harddrive should be OK because a full format should have detected bad sectors. Maybe my RAM is damaged?

I'll buy a new motherboard with video card, cpu and memory but I will keep the old HDD. My old mobo is burnt so I can't boot the PC. I want to do a fresh install on C: but I have some data that I need. I have a few ideas but I don't know if they'll work.
1)Can I use Windows XP Live USB edition to boot with the new mobo, copy the data from C: to another partition and then do a clean Windows install(well, only the C: partition)?
2)What if I do a Windows Repair Install, copy the data from C: to another drive and then do a clean install?(I don't think this is a good option because the user settings and program files will be deleted and I want to keep them so I will know what apps will I have to install.

Trying to do a completely fresh install of XP on a mates computer. I have booted from 2 seperate windows xp discs (both of which have worked fine previously). It gets a small way into the setup (just past RAID drivers etc) then asks "Please insert Windows XP Disk 2 or whatever (depending on which windows version) in Drive A: and press any key to continue." I have never had this happen before and am not sure how to get past it.
