My desktop Icon letters are in a highlighted colored box. I have tried to remove the colored box to make it transparent by going to start then control panel then system and click on the advanced tab , click settings under performance, under the visual effects tab I chose ( Checked) use drop shadows for icons labels. clicked apply and it does not work. Help Please:

View 9 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago, I clicked on an attachment, and nothing happened in the foreground. However, now I have an icon (zero bytes) on the Desktop that defies removal. When I try to delete it I get Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source file or disk. Ive booted up from several PE bootables and tried using various explorers but even they give the same windows message. Ive dropped to console several times and drilled to the Desktop, but it is invisible. So it is a figment of XP. The icon is named �What NOT to do with a housecat.It cannot be renamed or pushed into another folder. Very weird. This is a nice learning experience. I do a bit of computer repair so I run into weird things all the time. The computer behaves normally in every way. XP Home, 3.3 gHz., 1 gig. ram, etc. Im sorry to have deleted the offend-ing email, as it may have yielded good evidence. Ive used Resplendent Registar, to find evidence of it in the registry. Even went to the �icon nameplace�, and there was nothing of importance. Rootkit Revealer reports: zone identifier hidden from Windows API�. (26 bytes).Blacklight rootkit prog. found no hidden items. Ive tried to use several linux bootables, but they do not work with my SATA drives.So the computer is fine, just one little annoyance. But I would like to learn from this in case I see it again in the future. Also, other people at the hospital opened it up and whatever it was, didn�t cause an issue.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi setup my office computer to be accessed remotely from home (both xp pro). i did this for the first time yesterday. this morning when i get to work i open outlook and it looks funny. when i hover over any menu item or toolbar the option is highlighted white (instead of its default blue)plus, each toolbar is "outlined".it looks like it has a perforation around it.i tried opening other office programs and they are all the same no other programs are experiencing problems.it looks like it is showing 16 Bit colors.my desktop icons are no longer transparent. i ran into this before and never figured it out it just corrected itself.

I'll click again and it opens. This happens if I open a program with a single click from the lower tool bar area also. I've noticed the screen will flicker once, after which invariably this situation occurs. I recently dumped and reinstalled Firefox, but before that I opened it one day and there was a one inch high field with some message I've since forgotten at the bottom of the window, and the Google logo, etc. was all shifted to the right. Just wondering why when you drag an IE http short cut to the desktop, it does not display the site logo icon. Sometimes, they will show and others not. I have had them even come and go after different sessions. I log on to Internet both through work firewall and at home on network through firewall and in motels through open and firewall protected isps.
A friend has a Compaq laptop running Windows XP. When you power up the system, the Windows XP logo screen comes up and then the desktop background comes up but it stops there. You never get any desktop icons or taskbar so there is no way to navigate. If anyone has any suggestions on how to debug this it would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have to use a BMP. The BMP file is about 7 times larger than the JPG file. Question: How do I tweak the laptop to let me use a JPG file as a Desktop background?

Background images with bitmap icon will display in preview, but not those with what appears to be a film icon. View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having difficulty changing my desktop wallpaper. No matter what I do, I cannot put a different picture or wallpaper on the desktop. I have already tried using the right click on the desktop and going into the properties that way. It won't even let me select any of the options for the wallpaper. And I used to be able to go to my photo files and just pick one, right click on it and select the "set as desktop background" option. But now it won't let me change it at all.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI can change the desktop wallpaper background to a personal pic, by using the browse button. no problem, but it won't keep the pic in the list of available backgrounds. it will keep the background i choose until i want to change it, but as soon as i switch, that pic disappears and if i want to change back, i have to use the browse button all over again. running xp home not a major problem, but annoying.if there is a quick fix i can't find it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I login into Windows XP pro following a normal boot up, within a couple of seconds the top half of my screen cannot be accessed my desktop shrinks about half way down the screen.If I load an application it only opens /maximises in that portion of the screen.However, the actual desktop background remains unchanged!
It very weird because if I login under a different user this does not happen.It seems that my screen is acting as virtual screen?I have checked the settings and nothing seems different.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi was working on a computer the other day helping someone "clean it up" and make it run faster. i did all the normal "clean up" stuff, got her back online, pc running much faster, everyone's happy.except for one thing: one of her original complaints was that her desktop background had recently reverted to all RED with this image in the middle that looks something like a biohazard logo. i tried changing the desktop background via the control panel, and it changed momentarily and then reverted back only moments later. I ran avg anti-virus and spybot to sweep her machine of any bugs/viruses (and found quite a few). when i left the red desktop was gone.
