View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently our Dell Optiplex 330 experienced some pretty severe virus attacks that render the computer useless. The user had disabled the installed protect advising that it slowed his performance and would not let him install cute little things from his favorite social network. The machine was so hosed it was determined the best course of action was to reformat the drive and basically start over. The problem is this unit was sold to us by Dell with a license for Windows Vista Business which we request it be down graded to XP service pack 3. Each time we attempt to reinstall windows xp from teh provided original disc we get the famous blue screen advising there is a problem with the hard drive, etc. How can we reinstall the our favorite XP? The unit has a SATA hard drive.

View 14 Replies View RelatedI received a dell optiplex gx110 and its os is win 2000 and it has a password so I removed the hard disk of the dell and put it on the other pc as a slave drive and I formatted the the hard disk in NTFS. When I was ready to install the win xp, the computer says NTLDR is missing press ctrl alt del to restart even though the boot sequence is in IDE CDROM > Floppy > Hard disk. I decided to format it again as a FAT32 using my other pc. "The NTLDR is missing" was changed into "Remove disk or other media press any key to restart".
View 6 Replies View RelatedHave two brand new Dell OptiPlex machines with WinXP Pro that reboot when you do a shutdown. They go through the normal shutdown and then start booting again. I've tried everything I can find on the web about power management settings and such, and have contacted Dell who ultimately recommended reinstalling the OS.Would anyone have any other recommendations before I take the drastic step of re installation? The machines have a ton of production software already loaded that will take hours to reinstall.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI do computer work for a library system. One library that I dread going to because these dell machines have been a headache for me. The problem started last year when the machines would just restart on there own when surfing the web. Tried to upgrade the machines from Win98 to XP problem still there. I then did a fresh install of the machine ran all the updates (before SP2 came out) and did everything I could think of. The machines were working with no problems. UNTIL one of them last week crashed, bad HDD. So I put a new Western Digital 40GB HDD in and did a clean install ran all the updates and installed Office XP with no problems. The machine was on for 6 hours running fine. Then I went to a website called www.safesurf.com and it just shutdown. With in a half of an second it shut completely down. Now the weird thing is that it doesn't run a scan for errors when the machine starts backup. Its like the computer has mental problems. I downloaded the new Java client and thought that would do the trick. I can get to the website from any other of my computers here in the office. Any ideals??? Nothing shows up in the error logs and I guess I don't know where to start. It can't be a power supply problem can it the machine is running fine until I go to that site.
View 3 Replies View RelatedEvery time I reboot the computer, skype (since it launches at start up) tells me that there are no sound devices. I go to the device manager, but the sound device is listed. It doesn't work though. I try winamp/wmp etc, no sound. So I do a uninstall, and redetect and its all good. Now if I reboot the computer, I have to repeat this whole process. Now, I thought this had something to do with the onboard audio, so I diabled that in the Bios, and added a pci sound card, but the same thing happened. This computer also has issues with WinXP sp2s firewall. I can't turn it on, but thats an issue for some other thread.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just used ACRONIS True Image to clone WIN XP Pro from an IBM Think pad to a Dell Optiplex desktop. After restoring the image to the Dell - I used the original Dell XP Pro disk to do a Repair install (not recovery console). XP then booted up into the Dell. All works fine and I have not had to re-install any of my applications. However, I am missing my display driver, Power management drivers, etc. So I can't hibernate but the display as it stands works fine.Is there some way of getting these drivers to be recognized or auto detected? I thought Windows would just auto detect them but perhaps because everything is working this step is bypassed.I can always go back and do a restore with my Dell disks but I am trying to avoid re-installing all my apps - the greater task than reinstalling XP.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've read that not all Windows XP Pro installations are the same. (OEM versions, Licensed versions, and the real deal retail.) Which one of these should I use to update a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Windows 98? (IT is a First Edition, Not SE) I ask this, because we had an OEM version, but the only option I get is Clean Install. As it is my bosses computer and all his program disk have disappeared over the years. He only wants an upgrade.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have trouble getting it to stop. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 on a Dell Optiplex. About 50% of the time, when I want to shut down, I get past the "Saving your settings" screen, to "Windows is shutting down". And that's as far as it goes. I then have to manually turn off the computer. It doesn't matter whether I've selected "Shut Down" or "Restart". The other 50% of the time it shuts down like it's supposed to.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a Dell laptop for a friend Latitude D630 running Windows XP Pro SP2. Seems the only place he can connect to a wireless network is at his home.I now have the laptop trying to figure what the problem is. Here's what I found. I was able to connect to the internet via a wireless at my place. First on another friend's wireless unsecured connection. I was also able to connect via my own connection a WEP secured connection. Connectivity lasted for about 30 minutes. I was suddenly disconnected with a message saying the there was no connectivity via my WEP connection. I then tried the unsecured connection and was able to connect to the net at least for a few minutes. Since that time I've had some trouble connecting. I've opened a command prompt and entered ipconfig / release, then ipconfig /renew. It works on the unsecured wireless connection, but not on the WEP network.
View 9 Replies View RelatedComputers are 2 identical Dell Latitude D600 with XP Pro.Dell #1 was given to me. It had never had ANY updates applied, had 56 Trojans and a bunch of other problems. I took it to the local library and used their WiFi connection to download Grisoft AVG, Ad-Aware and Microsoft Malware Removal to clean it up. I then was given an identical used Dell #2. it was at the SP2 level, so I again went to the library and updated this one with 85 XP updates. Then, as a learning experience, I restored XP Pro on Dell #1 from a Dell CD, P/N 1R594 and then installed SP2 on it. All went well.I then tried to use WiFi on Dell #1. I tried to create a new connection, but when I clicked on finish nothing got created.I looked at Dell #2 which has a working WiFi connection and noticed that when I click on All Programs I see an entry for Dell Wireless, containing 2 itemsDell Wireless WLAN card Readme and Dell Wireless WLAN card Utility This entry does not appear on Dell #1 even though I used it on a Wireless network prior to the XP PRO CD restore today.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAs fate would have it, the warranty expired on the 15th of July - The computer is a Dell Inspiron laptop - running windows XP. After being left online overnight in a hotel with wireless internet it locked up. Currently we get different results (but all results end in a lock up at the windows screen) - usually it comes up with a screen saying "we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this" (no new hardware or software was installed prior to lockup) It gives you options to try to start - (I can't remember what all it said - but safe mode was a choice and going back to a prior time was a choice) Usually it is just locked up and you can't click on anything.
Once I did get it to go to safe mode and I tried to do a system restore - It did go through all the motions of doing a system restore - but when rebooted - the same "we apologize" error was there - WHen I can click on a starting option it goes to the windows screen - the blue line runs for a few seconds - then it just locks up. Dell wants a small fortune to help me over the phone. This is my son's college computer. I was thinking he probably picked up a virus when he was online in the hotel. Is that possible? It has let me get into set up by pressing F2 during boot - but I have no idea what to do there (if anything) F12 is another option it gives - but it wont do anything when I push that.

View 6 Replies View Related2 year old 2650 Dell laptop running XP. Installed a Linksys wireless G card and then a couple wks later the machine won't reboot. When powering up I get the blue Dell screen with "F2 for setup" and then it goes to a dark silver/black screen with a pretty white cursor flashing upper left corner of the display. Besides that I get nothing. Power down/up/sideways and nothing, except the same Dell screen noted above and the same silvery black screen w.cursor.
I've removed the batt so only the power cord is feeding it. No dice. I did somehow manage to get to my desktop a few min ago after 2 wks of no attempts but as soon as I tried to launch IE it froze and I had to power down and now I'm back to square one. Have also tried F8 a hundred times, as well as dancing on my left big toe while chanting to the computer gods.
i have a dell 6000, when i turn it on the xp starting sequence begins nad suddenly it shuts off with a message of fatal error and a lot of zeroes followed by a 5, what could be the problem

I was told to call HP,and I did but did not get much help. What should I do to get my wireless printer work? I have a PC and a laptop. Prior to Verizon, I have a DSL and Vonage, both routers and print server did not have the same problem.
