I do computer work for a library system. One library that I dread going to because these dell machines have been a headache for me. The problem started last year when the machines would just restart on there own when surfing the web. Tried to upgrade the machines from Win98 to XP problem still there. I then did a fresh install of the machine ran all the updates (before SP2 came out) and did everything I could think of. The machines were working with no problems. UNTIL one of them last week crashed, bad HDD. So I put a new Western Digital 40GB HDD in and did a clean install ran all the updates and installed Office XP with no problems. The machine was on for 6 hours running fine. Then I went to a website called www.safesurf.com and it just shutdown. With in a half of an second it shut completely down. Now the weird thing is that it doesn't run a scan for errors when the machine starts backup. Its like the computer has mental problems. I downloaded the new Java client and thought that would do the trick. I can get to the website from any other of my computers here in the office. Any ideals??? Nothing shows up in the error logs and I guess I don't know where to start. It can't be a power supply problem can it the machine is running fine until I go to that site.

Hello,i tried to install xp on a dell optiplex 330 and it keeps on giving me the blue screen. i installed xp on the hard disk using another computer and when i put the hardisk back in the dell, it refused to work and kept restarting. Does any one know if the dell optiplex 330 comes with its own special xp cd
Recently our Dell Optiplex 330 experienced some pretty severe virus attacks that render the computer useless. The user had disabled the installed protect advising that it slowed his performance and would not let him install cute little things from his favorite social network. The machine was so hosed it was determined the best course of action was to reformat the drive and basically start over. The problem is this unit was sold to us by Dell with a license for Windows Vista Business which we request it be down graded to XP service pack 3. Each time we attempt to reinstall windows xp from teh provided original disc we get the famous blue screen advising there is a problem with the hard drive, etc. How can we reinstall the our favorite XP? The unit has a SATA hard drive.

I received a dell optiplex gx110 and its os is win 2000 and it has a password so I removed the hard disk of the dell and put it on the other pc as a slave drive and I formatted the the hard disk in NTFS. When I was ready to install the win xp, the computer says NTLDR is missing press ctrl alt del to restart even though the boot sequence is in IDE CDROM > Floppy > Hard disk. I decided to format it again as a FAT32 using my other pc. "The NTLDR is missing" was changed into "Remove disk or other media press any key to restart".
Have two brand new Dell OptiPlex machines with WinXP Pro that reboot when you do a shutdown. They go through the normal shutdown and then start booting again. I've tried everything I can find on the web about power management settings and such, and have contacted Dell who ultimately recommended reinstalling the OS.Would anyone have any other recommendations before I take the drastic step of re installation? The machines have a ton of production software already loaded that will take hours to reinstall.
This is symbol is showing instead of my line but to the left.Error loading C;windowsNVMCTRAY.DLL This specified module could not be found. After reloading Windows XP on a Dell optiplex GX270.
Every time I reboot the computer, skype (since it launches at start up) tells me that there are no sound devices. I go to the device manager, but the sound device is listed. It doesn't work though. I try winamp/wmp etc, no sound. So I do a uninstall, and redetect and its all good. Now if I reboot the computer, I have to repeat this whole process. Now, I thought this had something to do with the onboard audio, so I diabled that in the Bios, and added a pci sound card, but the same thing happened. This computer also has issues with WinXP sp2s firewall. I can't turn it on, but thats an issue for some other thread.
I have just used ACRONIS True Image to clone WIN XP Pro from an IBM Think pad to a Dell Optiplex desktop. After restoring the image to the Dell - I used the original Dell XP Pro disk to do a Repair install (not recovery console). XP then booted up into the Dell. All works fine and I have not had to re-install any of my applications. However, I am missing my display driver, Power management drivers, etc. So I can't hibernate but the display as it stands works fine.Is there some way of getting these drivers to be recognized or auto detected? I thought Windows would just auto detect them but perhaps because everything is working this step is bypassed.I can always go back and do a restore with my Dell disks but I am trying to avoid re-installing all my apps - the greater task than reinstalling XP.
I've read that not all Windows XP Pro installations are the same. (OEM versions, Licensed versions, and the real deal retail.) Which one of these should I use to update a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Windows 98? (IT is a First Edition, Not SE) I ask this, because we had an OEM version, but the only option I get is Clean Install. As it is my bosses computer and all his program disk have disappeared over the years. He only wants an upgrade.
I have trouble getting it to stop. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 on a Dell Optiplex. About 50% of the time, when I want to shut down, I get past the "Saving your settings" screen, to "Windows is shutting down". And that's as far as it goes. I then have to manually turn off the computer. It doesn't matter whether I've selected "Shut Down" or "Restart". The other 50% of the time it shuts down like it's supposed to.
I have just re-installed Windows XP. After loading it I have opened the Device Manager and noticed that there is the dreaded "yellow questionmark" next to something called: Ethernet Controller. I am running a Dell OptiPlex GX260.
I bought a Dell Optiplex computer (gx270) that had no operating system. I am looking for step by step instructions as to what I need to do to install the above mentioned OS. Upon completion, connect to the internet. Let me know what other info you may need to assist.
I have a Dell Optiplex 760 with a DVD RW/ CD running XP. Windows does not see the DVD drive although it saw it a few weeks ago. BIOS knows about the drive. The drive tests fine on other machines. They want to reload my OS to fix it :-( which means that all the rest of the code I have on the system will be trashed and I will need to reload it all again.
I have a Dell Optiplex 210L and if I leave the computer running in Windows XP and come back to it lets say the next day. I have to hold the power button in until it forces a shutdown and then turn it back on to get the computer working. It then works fine until it happens all over again.Computer is running Windows XP SP2.
i have i think it is a spyware problem, there is a file in the windows folder that needs deleating, the only problem is windows vistas explorer restarts every 10 seconds or so and i cant browse the hdd because it jus restarts itself lik u have just logged in, i have even tried this in safe mode but it stil does it. Anybody know of any problems like a certain spyware name or virus that is doin this, and any programs that would likely to get rid of it, this has happened before, and i deleted the program in the windows folder and it was fine, except i dont know the name of this file i havbe to delete this time.
Ive got two dell optiplex gx260 computer that dont read their cd-rom drives. The cd drives are in working condition though. Both are running XP professional sp2 with 1.9ghz pentium 4 processors. any suggestions?
a friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 (P4-2Ghz, 60Gb HDD, 784mb RAM- added 512mb and a NEC DVD+/-R, circa 2002 I think?) and needs to do a clean install. He has the CD that came with it. We looked all over google and the Dell site and can't seem to find out how to do a clean install. We pressed F12 and tried to boot from the CD-ROM and thought it was going to work, but it said that we were trying to install XP on a partition that already had XP on it. I saw no option for full/clean restore.
I got a friends personal computer it is a dell demension 2400 it won't do anything except go to the screen with big dell letters on it.I have a soyo techaid card it came up with a code number 35 which could be initialize alternate chipset registers or is it what dell says there code 35 is cmos shutdown test in progress or bad.
Transferred all information from Dimension (Dell) to Dell XPS 410. Both computers using XP program. When I start to use my Picasa program I have a continual pop up that says " The DLL "cpuinf32.dll" can not be loaded. OS reports: The specifdied module could not be fouind. Am no computeer whiz--so this is all "Greek" to me. What should I do to correct this?
ok I have a bunch of crap (virus') on my computer and i am in the process of tryin to fix it. i.e. spybot, ad-aware, spyblaster, and HJT. One problem im havinf is that i cant go to any web pages. so i have to do all this then bring the results to work so neeedless to say its taking some time. well anyway i was wondering since my computer is pretty new would it be ok to save the few things i wanna keep on a flash disk and reformat and reinstall windows media center edition? Or would last known good configuration do the trick (get all the crap off)?
I recently had to have my computer completely restored due to a virus. I lost everything on my computer. Now when I try to access yahoo chat rooms I can't get in. I can get to the chat room itself but when I click on the verification link nothing happens. This has happened on a couple other sites also. I'm not sure how to fix this problem.
I've created a new user account for my other half and it all works fine EXCEPT for the fact that any URL which doesn't end in '.htm' or '.html' won't load in IE6. also have the google toolbar and none of the buttons seem to do anything (but I think this is related to my first problem). On my own account, everything works perfectly. I've tried as much as I can without ANY success (checking for viruses, spyware, many settings etc.).
A simple, silly question but where is sign in on these pages? I can't find it and to be identified as the upright character I am I need to go to 'sign out' before I am recognised. What am I not seeing?
