Win Xp Home, 1 gig memory, 60 gig HD with 50 gig available, Dell 4700.
Several weeks ago, I deleted JASC Paint shop Pro because I didn;t use it and thoought I didn't need it.
Yesterday I tried to use my Dell printer software to scan a document to email to a friend. I got an error message indicating the system was looking for the JASC Paint Shop software. tried the Dell cd that should have contained the software, but nothing is there.

When I click on Control Panel or My Computer icon nothing happens. I think these files were deleted. My daughter was uninstalling McAfee and had to boot into safe mode to manually delete McAfee. This must have deleted the files needed for the Control Panel & My Computer. I tried to reinstall windows XP from the original disk that came with my computer.

have an e-mail address to e-mail Microsoft for hotixes? I have tried doing an e-mail request but when I put in my PID it says I should contact my computer manufacturer. Does anyone have a direct e-mail address I can use at all? If not, I suppose I will have to ring them, it just seems silly because all it's for is a hotfix.

My "run" command is missing from my start bar and I can't figure out how to get a CD to run. Also, when I click programs, there are 3 columns of programs, but I can't see the 3rd one (it's off the screen to the right) and can't get the window to move to the left.

After all the troubles I have been having with this pc, I've finally got everything working the way I wanted it to work with the exception of one thing, my screensaver. I can't figure it out. I have it set to run after 5 min of me not being on the pc, but after it runs for about 10 min or so, it stops working as if someone moved the mouse. I've left it sit that way for hours thinking that something just vibrated the mouse or something and it never comes back on. It will come back on only if I move the mouse or strike a key and let it sit for the 5 min, but then it's the same all over again. I've tried different wait times and different settings but nothing works. Any ideas?

Found this forum on trying to decipher a blue screen, but I'm pretty bad at diagnosing them.I read a thread about a minidump, and located that last dump from my blue screen and attached it to this post.My blue screen occurs when:1) I'm watching a video on Media Player Classic and all of a suddent the video goes black. The player then freezes if I attempt to move it/do anything with it. 2) After the MPC freeze, I can't select anything. I have to alt tab to be able to click/move anything after that.3) I then kill MPC via [X] and End Process or Ctrl+Alt+Delete and Kill Process.4) Any attempt at then watching another video after that with Media Player Classic blue screens my computer (and it doesn't stay up for me long enough to read it, I forgot where to make it not instantly reboot on blue screen).

Can I recover messages I accidentally deleted in Outlook Express of Windows 2000XP? These messages were in their own file but somehow got moved to a subfile of the Deleted Items folder. In trying to removed the Deleted Items folder the sub-folder went with it. There were a large number of messages I had received via e-mail that I intended to keep.

First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

My Help and Support stopped working about the same time I installed the free utility GhostScript / Gsview so that I could view postscript files. I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative. Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? What are the other options?

I've been having some internet connectivity problems lately, and I believe it's due to some nasty spyware. I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

I was using the RegCleaner and clearing out some unused keys made by programs i no longer had on the computer. It was simple enough and nothing going wrong, no harm done. I went to go take a piss and when i came back i found my buddy on my PC.He asked "what the H*** is all this??" and i said "its my registry" and he goes "o you dont need any of that" and no sooner did those words come outa his mouth did he press Shift + A & DELETE and poof..all my reg keys were gone.i dunno if i have a back up present.what i can say is that every time i try to click on something now it says its either been moved, deleted, or renamed..nothing works anymore besides my internet. i cant even run .zip files because it says there is no program to do it with. theres no program to "open" files with. all because my screw up friend over here decided he knew what he was doin with my pc.

I am trying to reinstall Nero, but it crashes during installation. I am in discussion with Ahead tech support, but I *think* the problem is with the registry. The Local_MachineSoftware tree has a key titled 'Ahead'. But when I select it I get an error message: Cannot open Ahead: Error opening key.The name, type, and data fields are all blank. I cannot delete or rename the key. I think that it causes the crash during installation when it tries to install one or more keys to that tree.I have used a registry cleaner, which from what I read here, I shouldn't have.

Besides the usual TEMP files and Temporary Internet Files (which, by the way, I have on a RAM disk, so they are automatically deleted), I wonder if the log files created by installations can be deleted. I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?

The bin says it has something in it but when I open the bin there is nothing. When I press empty recycle bin it gives me the usual warning, 'Are you sure you want to delete these files', But the bin still has the full icon and if i press empty bin again, The same thing happens. Also, When deleting files it says, 'Do you wish to delete?' and gets deleted without going to the recycle bin. I have checked my recycle bins properties and the box 'Delete without sending to recycle bin' is not checked.

what's happened here is that on a failed attempt at reinstalling XP with a copy (after restart it asks to insert the XP SP2 disc) I went into boot.ini to delete the "windows xp professional setup" option but accidentally removed the actual XP entry instead. Now it gives me no option to start the computer normally, even when going through safe mode, the only option is to start up with the XP Set up. Is it impossible to get into the computer through the OS now, because none of my XP Set Up discs are working as they're all copies, my original is now in another state with my father.

I have to get rid of all traces of "illegal" files, tracks to files, mention that I ever even looked at said files on the internet or on my hard drive. This is my work computer and they are checking it this Thursday.XP professional SP2. As example, when I open Adobe Photoshop, it shows a link to every movie and pix I have viewed. I have deleted these files, so they no longer exist, but it shows the files as having been viewed. You click on the file in Photoshop, and it says the file is no longer available, but the NAME of the file, (ie Lesbian Girlfriends.mpeg) is still there. I have deleted History, the IE cache files, the cookies, the actual file itself, but I can't find the hidden file that still shows my viewing history. If the boss has soft ware that even detects that type of name, I'm screwed
