Registry Key Cannot Be Deleted
Jul 27, 2005
I am trying to reinstall Nero, but it crashes during installation. I am in discussion with Ahead tech support, but I *think* the problem is with the registry. The Local_MachineSoftware tree has a key titled 'Ahead'. But when I select it I get an error message: Cannot open Ahead: Error opening key.The name, type, and data fields are all blank. I cannot delete or rename the key. I think that it causes the crash during installation when it tries to install one or more keys to that tree.I have used a registry cleaner, which from what I read here, I shouldn't have.

I foolishly deleted something in my registry. Now I cannot access the internet from a program that wants to communicate with it to register the product or collect information via the internet, such as Print Master.

I was using the RegCleaner and clearing out some unused keys made by programs i no longer had on the computer. It was simple enough and nothing going wrong, no harm done. I went to go take a piss and when i came back i found my buddy on my PC.He asked "what the H*** is all this??" and i said "its my registry" and he goes "o you dont need any of that" and no sooner did those words come outa his mouth did he press Shift + A & DELETE and poof..all my reg keys were gone.i dunno if i have a back up present.what i can say is that every time i try to click on something now it says its either been moved, deleted, or renamed..nothing works anymore besides my internet. i cant even run .zip files because it says there is no program to do it with. theres no program to "open" files with. all because my screw up friend over here decided he knew what he was doin with my pc.

While troubleshooting a failed internet connection (Windows XP Home, SP 2) I installed Windows Internet Explorer 7.0 (probably a beta version) that wasn't downloaded from the windows website. I've since uninstalled it, so I am now running IE 6, but IE 7 left something behind. Now, when I connect to the internet I get to my home page, but when I select a link I get a blank web page and the error message "Windows cannot find ˜(null). Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click Search.Through research on the internet I've found that the registry key "C93E5AB5-7B71-4C31-B6B2-7F922A551EFF" needs to be deleted to fix my problem. I've tried with no success. I've tried adding "Everyone" to the registry users, changing the permissions so all users can access the registry and tried to delete the key, downloaded Registry Fix software, I've tried deleting it using regedit and regedt32 and I've run the program IE7betakey.reg with no success.

I wanted to clean up little bit a HKCU - run, and i started to back up every single value separately but after 2nd I didn't notice that the whole run folder was highlighted so I confirmed a deletion and Oops - now the folder is gone. (the dumb touch pad did it not me).Luckily most of the stuff still works, windows starts normaly, but I lost a volume control throug the keyboard (Sorry I didn't mention it before, it's a laptop intel P4 2Ghz, 2G ram, Xp sp2 pro.) and I am scared what will happen next if I try to install something that requires to put the value in this folder. I tried to create a run folder under the selected HKCU but it keeps placin' a new folder under windows update tree. Any idea how can I save my system from re-install? Is there a way to restore this, I tried system restore but it says there is nothing to restore. I checked the recycle bin and it's not there. Any sugestion is welcome.

So far my computer is not acting bad, but those registries I delte, are they going to cause me more grief later?

I have got two startup entries that cant be deleted. HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun They have the ability to clone most startup entries, and they cant be permanently deleted. Over the last year I have downloaded and ran multiple scans, with various malware applications from quite a few web site help forums.None gave any indication of malware present, but I suppose you cant rule it out. The first time I notice something odd was with Misconfig, I had three startup entries for SISUSBRG. I deleted two of them and disabled the original one. The next time they re-appeared was as 1 and 2 program entries

This will sound really like a really stupid thing to have done, but basically i followed a troubleshooting article on the microsoft website to try and fix an error on my PC, (every time i shut down i get a big blue screen thing). Part of what it suggested was removing a number of files from the registry. I did this but unfortnatly i seem to have just made things worse. The error message still appears when i shutdown but now i seem to have deleted something needed for my CD drive as this now says that the regisry is corrupted in its error box. Is there any way of getting the files i deleted back ( i did not make any backups).I am running windows 2000 and the files i deleted were Cdralw2k and Cdr4_2k

In my registry I've noticed porn related entries in: HKEY CURRENT USERsoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrent versioninternet settingszonemapdomains
I'm on XP home SP2 and all updates are current. I run 2 anti virus programs, use SpyBot, Adaware, SpywareBlaster & CW Shredder. I've checked for virus's and run ousecall.henever I see anything suspicious I delete with a vengence and my security settings are properly set. I've shutdown the System Restore, deleted everything suspect in the registry manually, run every antispyware, antivirus program I can think of (regularly too). I shut down and restart the PC and everything I've deleted returns. I never find much of anything to report after running all tests, except mru's and an occasional tracker. My PC works fine, my connection is fast and I experience absolutely no problems I'm aware of. Obviously there's something I'm missing or not doing as I don't visit suspect sites. A helping hand here would be much appreciated.

I was uninstalling a prog that had a trojan in it. I deleted the registry keys and such;manuelling removing it because the Explorer.exe would shut down every time I tried to do it the old fasion way Wink So, I was going through, and I accidentally deleted the Uninstall registry key Which has led all the installed progs to not show up in the Add/Remove Programs gui that's in Control Panel. And so, I am wondering if I have to wait until tommorow to do this, when I have the windows cd. Or if I'm able to just do some other recovery.I restarted and held down F8, and did the "Last known good configuration" thing, but it said I had to replace hal.dll.

Can I recover messages I accidentally deleted in Outlook Express of Windows 2000XP? These messages were in their own file but somehow got moved to a subfile of the Deleted Items folder. In trying to removed the Deleted Items folder the sub-folder went with it. There were a large number of messages I had received via e-mail that I intended to keep.

First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

I tried to delete the registry entries which were bad, I had 30 of them, but the these two will just not go away, even by doing them manually, such as saving as a backup then deleting it manually and remerging. They just show up no matter what I do, or so use programs like Registry Mechanic, which I found only mediocre, very far from the ratings. to delete these two entries somehow from someone who is actully knows how to without using several so called registry cleaners, which only work partially.

Can I import this backup to clean out all registry entries since the

Or can I do a comparison between the backup and the current registry to look

On my box at home, I have Norton System Works, which contains a registry diagnostic/sweeper.At work, where I run Windows 2000 Pro, I was wondering...I know there are various registry diagnostic & cleaner utilities out there on the web, but I thought I had heard that Windows itself either includes one on the OS disc or makes one available for download. Is there such a thing as an official Windows Registry utility?

Besides the usual TEMP files and Temporary Internet Files (which, by the way, I have on a RAM disk, so they are automatically deleted), I wonder if the log files created by installations can be deleted. I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?
