Computer Take Time To Reach Login Screen
Jan 4, 2008
some relatives of mine have a decent enough computer with not that much stuff on it (its better than my PC1). anyhow they've asked my to try and speed up their boot time because it takes yonks to reach the log in screen and it really shouldn't. so im going to have a thorough clean of msconfig, im going to use "ntregopt" and i might even use ATF cleaner.anything else i can use to speed it up?

Here's what's going on one of my computers (windows xp home professional I believe) I downloaded a pretty nasty virus by mistake and ran it (for some reason avg didnt detect it as a virus) well this virus may just of totaled my hard drive beyond repair I've researched on the web for people who have had it happen to them but found no easy answer. What happens is this:
1. I boot up computer
2. Computer gets all the way to loading bar
3. Quick Blue screen appears
4. BAM computer reboots endless cycle
Now I've made myself a winxp recovery cd (never had one in the first place) and have tried various commands to bring my computer to a working state to no avail
chkdsk and chkdsk /r return with something like "the system has unrecoverable errors"
bootcfg /rebuild returns with something about a problem with the file system and says to run chkdsk. I also tried a command to rebuild the boot.ini but it failed to. I have been successful at getting windows PE to run by booting to cd drive I tried chkdsk from there and still no good. Safe mode returns the same results btw so thats out of the question. ONE TIME I was able to start up windows in something like directory services mode but im not quite sure how :/ It just decided to show up on the menu with boot options on a try........

My Dell Dimension 4500 PC has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. When I start the computer it goes through the DOS screen and then moves to the black Windows start up screen with MS Windows XP Logo and the blinking blue progress indicator. At the end of this cycle an error message in a square box appears for a fraction of a second making it impossible to read it. Then the blue Windows screen appears with the message Windows is starting up. It stays like that for about twenty minutes before the log on screen appears. After the password is entered the computer works normally.
Possibly if I could read the error message it would help. Is there a way of stopping the start up process at this point to allow the error message to be read? Would this error message be recorded by Windows elsewhere so that it can be examined? The other option is to reload Windows but I would like to try to fix this issue before I take this path.

my computer would give me a few problems while booting up. I would start the computer, it would run through BIOS, run through the Windows loading screen, and after that it would run the CHKDSK to make sure my disks are fine. CHKDSK doesn't work, it just freezes right before checking the disks, so I restart and generally it will boot up. Most of the time it would boot up perfectly, but rarely would it go to the xp loading screen and then flicker as if it as going to go to the windows login screen but wouldn't. The screen would just stay black and I'd have to restart.
Next time, generally it would work perfect. So this brings me to the current day. After the windows xp loading screen, it goes black. The computer is on, but I don't see any activity for the HDD via the LED. SO i go into safe mode, i finally get CHKDSK to run, I had to really mess with some stuff to get that working. Windows says the volume is fine, and the only way I can boot my PC is in safe mode, but even that will freeze sometimes while loading some of the files.

Today, I found out that my computer hangs at the login screen. I boot up the computer as normal, and the login box is shown. I click into the password field (Note: I do not have the normal welcome screen, I have the Win2000 one.) and am ready to type my password. When I begin typing my password, nothing pops up. I attempt to move the mouse, but it is frozen where it last was. Sometimes it doesn't even move (The mouse) when I first boot it up. So seeing this as any problem, I go in Safe Mode. It's a sure bet that the mouse will move. Though it moves flawlessly, the password box is where the annoyance stays. I attempt to type my password, but then my computer hangs, AGAIN.I'm typing this from my brother's computer, and have yet to find the answer. I hear that this is some sort of password corruption and can be prevented by not having passwords on the account. I want to change this, but I can't login in the first place.
This I'm sure is not a virus. I scan for viruses every week (With Kaspersky), leave Ad-Aware, Giant Antispyware, and Zone Alarm on. I've used Google to search for answers, and yes I've found them being solved. They include the same problems, but they can get into Safe Mode, which in my case, I can't. I've tried Safe Mode 7 times and it doesn't work. (I can get in safe mode but the keyboard/mouse still hang)I didn't have time to backup files, and I have pictures that I haven't backed up onto CDs. People that have solved this problem have done it without reformatting, and I need a solution without reformatting.

I'm using Win XP sp2 and I usually leave my computer on 24/7. This morning I tried to open a file but it never opened. I went into the task manager to see if its even processing and it was there but the ccapp was taking all the cpu. So i tried to shutdown and restart. After that windows boots up to the login screen just fine but when i click on my account it take a long time to show my wallpaper. I can pull up task manager and the cpu isnt being used. the hdd is only accessed in little bursts. After a while the start menu pops up. any keyboard commands like to bring up win explorer takes a long time and all the commands pop up in a big burp of of command executions. I'm trying to reach system restore but cant. I'm not sure how to get into safemode with this system because just after post when f8 is usually used to bring up the menu the system opens a boot drive selection screen. During the RAM tests during post theres text stating press del to enter bios and f8 to enter boot drive selection so im not sure how to get to safemode now.

I have Windows XP Home system that shares a folder and 2 printers with 2 other XP Home systems and 1 XP Pro system. All 4 computers are in the same workgroup Somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes after startup the XP Pro system loses the ability to browse the local network and loses contact with the shared folder and the printers. The share and the printers are still visible and useable to the other systems on the network

For the last 4 or 5 days I've not been able to connect to several sites including: Microsoft.com, windows update (and several other MS related sites,) iwon.com and connections to a number of sites have slowed to a crawl. The XP SP2 upgrade was over a month ago and I've had no problems related to that other than my computer slowing down a bit. What really throws me is this occurring on two different computers using different O/S's. I've checked the IE security settings tab and the advanced tab on all three machines (they are all set to default)

I'm trying to help someone reach safe mode on an HP Pavillion 520w long distance who says that none of the keys work. I thought F8 was universal(MSFT describes it in their Safe Mode KB)and F5 might be used on some machines. I don't know about other keys and always thought Bios setup could vary as to key to reach but not safe mode. Does anyone have any info or authoritative reference on Safe Mode keys in general and that particular HP?

Each time I turn on my computer and as it is boots up it will delay for a time with a line that reads something like Automatic IDE Configuration and then a message that my date and time are incorrect. The date goes back to Nov. 2003. Once I correct the date, time and year things seem to perform ok.

I was just typing along in a word document when my whole screen on my laptop flipped. File, Edit etc are across the bottom and start and all those things normally across the bottom are on the top - but upside down. The mouse is working backwards as well. MAJOR PAIN. When I restart it, the Windows screen comes up correctly but from the login screen on everything is flipped. I just use that computer for word processing not the internet so I'm hoping it is not a virus. I tried restoring the system

After booting up my laptop and before the Windows login screen I get a screen which pops up. I have to press the OK button on this screen before the Wondows login screen will appear. The screen has a square outline with the filename in the top left corner and an OK button on the bottom of the screen - the center of the square is blank. The script before the file name is squares and lines which look like bar code. The file name which appears at the end of the script is always a dll type file and seems to be different each boot up. When I search on the file names the files are always related to Windows. These are the file names from the last three times I booted up. xpob2res.dll, wuaueng.dll, mprapi.dll.

I got an AMD Sempron 2600 and a k7Triton Motherboard for Christmas and put them in my computer. After that my computer barely ever would boot up. If it didnt boot up my loading bar on the windows XP screen would freeze (the blue one) although it didnt freeze it actually would move very very slowly but windows would never load. If windows did boot from me choosing last knwn config(only one I tried) then it would boot flawlessly. But know the real problem.... I came home from school and had not turned my comp off in 2 days (hibernating) and my computer seemed to be slow i pressed ctrl+alt+del and my CPU Usage said 100%! even tho I was barely runing anything so i turned off my computer(not hibernate)

I have had to rebuild both my PC's (and my network) over the last fortnight.
I installed Client Service For Netware in an effort to solve a problem (it wasn't the answer) then deinstalled it.Ever since then I have been getting the Netware Login Screen (single account name & password) rather than the XP screen (multiple account names visible). The pain now is that if another user wants to use the PC I get logged out completely, as opposed to being able to switch user while keeping my programmes running.

Hi-I just tried to load a HP office ject 4215 all-in-one printer on my computer using the typical install which included all kinds of features. I don't have enough space so I removed it using the uninstall feature on the cd. It did not remove everything so I used Windows explorer to find what I could. Then, I reinstalled it using the minimum requirements. It is working fine but everytime my screen saver comes on, when I move the mouse I am at a windows login screen that shows the users (only one which is me) on the right and I have to click this to get back to my desktop. I have Windows XP Professional.

When i boot my windows xp home edition machine, the normal login screen appears, but not all of the users and their icons show up One user and the guest user doesn't display...it is also in a lower resolution, so that may be why the other users don't show up, because there isn't enough room. Even when i click on my user, the first one listed, nothing happens. It doesn't log on, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice to get the alternative login screen to appear...and then when i click OK for my user, it logs in. I would like to have it back to the original state of the first login screen...and not have to go through the steps of the other screen. Has anybody ever experienced this before?
