How can I start my computer in MS-DOS mode? (In case my operation system is
Windows XP) And how can I back to XP?
I went into bios and disabled the search for the A: drive , because i couldn't care less. then it brought me to the screen to choose to open in safe mode, normally, or from the last point where windows worked well. problem : i can not use my keyboard in this setting, it works in bios, but i cant choose to load from the last working point of the OS.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo one of the users here is using a Lenovo Desktop, ThinkCentre M55 i believe... Since updating to SP3 for XP his computer has now started going into sleep mode when he is away for 20+ minutes and the only way to wake it up is the hit the power button. To stop the computer from doing this, I have always thought to simply go into control panel -> Power -> set the scheme to never turn off the HDD or go into system standby. Hibernation mode is disabled also. I have also checked the powercfg and even that says the computer will never sleep. I have checked the BIOS but there is nothing in the power about disabling these features. There is nothing in our group policy about computers being forced to sleep either.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am still having issues putting my computer into standby or into hybernation mode. It will start to go into it. But then after a few seconds of it going into the mode, the computer will start back up. I am running windows XP home. The computer model is a MDG computer running a intel motherboard and processor. I have checked and played with the bios setting and it does not help.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to boot up, my PC keeps on going in a circle..between WINDOWS XP, DELL, DEATH BLUE SCREEN and goes around with the same screens. I can't reboot into any other type of mode (safe, etc.), nor can I even get to the DOS mode to run some tests. I am able to get to F12 and do a boot to utility partition and ran tests on the hard drive, etc. and everything passes, that's why I don't think it's my HD, but a virus....Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help, PC is totally not usable!!!! Thanks!

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer, when started up in normal mode, just goes to a blank red screen....no icons, no nothing. The only way you can get anything to work in normal mode is by way of the task manager. In safe mode, however, I have access to everything except for sound. I have gone through the Microsoft website and ran all of the virus tests and scans. They say they find things and that they have removed them, but after restarting, it's the same old thing!! I'm pretty sure it's some sort of virus

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been having this problem for past 2-3 days and this is very very random. At times, my laptop would just go on a really slow motion mode where even switching windows or typing a word would take seconds / minutes and it would be fine after a few minutes. This has happened several times and I have tried to keep an eye on which program could be causing it and narrowed it down to Firefox, MSN Messenger or uTorrent because they were running at every time this problem occurred. In fact, once i forcibly closed Firefox and computer was fine. But at different times of when this occurred, either or none of those problems were running so those processes could be ruled out. When i checked Task manager, 'CPU Usage' was shot up to 100% but under 'Processes' none of the programs were hogging down the computer.
I ran Ad-Aware and Spy Sweeper and none came up with any suspicious/malicious threats. Ad-Watch was kinda slowing down my computer so i thought that could have been it but this has occurred several times after Ad-Aware's uninstallation. I have also ran a virus check and nothing came up. :s The weirdest thing is that if i forcefully shut down the computer and restart.. it still starts off in a really really slow motion mode so the slow effect somehow still carries on after computer's shutdown. I ran HijackThis and ran auto-analyzer but that came up with nothing either.
I would appreciate any input or any ideas towards solutions anyone may have.. this is getting really annoying even though i have been very patient. I am running Windows XP on a HP Tablet and all my windows update/security/anti-virus are up-to-date. I haven't installed any program in past 2-3 days except Ad-Aware and Spy Sweeper and i am never prompted for any pop-ups or anything, so being online or offline doesn't make a difference, it seems. Oh and the only processes on top of 'Mem Usage' in Task Manager are usually McAfee Service and Task Manager itself (after firefox's termination).
How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer seems to be in a mess and I have absolutely no idea why.It will only start in Safe Mode, trying last known configuration and normal start ups cause it to freeze atthe loading screen. It started when my computer randomly froze up while I was using it. I tried rebooting it but only safe mode worked, however when I left it alone for a couple of hours it worked normally for around 10 minutes, then froze up again.I thought it could be overheating so I left it for the night, but its still not booting up normally.I've tried using msconfig to make it do a diagnostic startup but that doesn't work either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHusband upgraded my puter yesterday. New mother board graphics card (VGA Asus more/new ram and new processor and a CPU. Will only boot up in safemode or safemode with networking. As it boots up a screen pops up that "appears" to be telling me why, but it goes off so quick I can't read it. Is there a way to freeze that screen so it can be read? Surely there's some kind of "log in log" that tells you this somewhere in XP?? After booting up for the 1st time we had 2 question marks in the device mgr and we finally got it so there are none. But still it will only boot up in safe mode. We're thinking that boot up screen will tell us what the problem is.

When I try to boot up Windows XP, when its at the windows loading screen with the Windows logo, the bar under it the blue thing will move for about 6 or 7 times and then just freeze and stop. Then I restart the computer and choose to boot in safe mode which is the only mode that works. This is the second time this has happened, the first time it happened through safe mode I got the Windows Xp.iso image from microsoft.com, and then used a product key locator to find it on my pc because I do not have the windows xp boot discs but my original copy of XP is legit.
I tried to reinstall Windows XP XPprofessional instead of XPhome), and all went well untill my computer had to restart for setup. When the computer restarted I got the message: "Windows XP setup cannot run under Safe Mode, Setup will restart your computer"(I think I should have done the XP installation in the normal mode, shouldn't I)But even when I choose "Start up in Normal configuration"(or something like that)in the Windows Advanced Option Menu, while restarting, It starts up in the safe mode.So now my computer KEEPS RESTARTING IN SAFE MODE
I am running Windows XP on an 8 year old Gateway computer, and it will only start in safe mode. This happened after I updated my hardware drivers.I got a fatal system error box,and system restore doesn't work. When I try to use the Gateway Restore discs, they won't play because my D drive isn't recognized. Should I just scrap everything and get a new HD since I haven't had any luck with reinstalling,or is there a way for a computer idiot to reinstall Windows XP without a disc? I never got one, this was my roommate's old PC.Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

View 1 Replies View RelatedTurn on my computer, it takes me to a screen which gives me a number of options like safe mode and start windows normally and a time limit of about 27-30 seconds. Whenever I choose something, whether it be safe mode or to start windows normally, my computer decides to just restart and the whole process repeats over and over again. Does anyone know what the problem is? I've tried connecting and reconnecting the computer, checking for loose wires and even keeping the computer off for a couple of days, nothing seems to work.

My Inspiron 6000 would freeze after being put in standby mode overnight and I would have to force shutdown. Soemone on this forum advised me to check the Power Options in Control Panel. How should I set it up so the system won't hang after overnight standby? My current settings: With AC adapter plugged in:
Turn off monitor: Never
Turn off hard disk: Never
System standby: Never
System hibernates: Never
