I have a question for you all and I hope you can answer it.I have two partitions on my harddrive at the moment. The first partition is my C: partition, where Windows XP and all the applications are run from. These partitions were set up by the people that made my computer. I have about 4 % diskspace left on the C: partition and I want to create more storage space on the hard drive by removing the second partition. The second partition is a back up of my older hard drive.I have both backed up already on external harddrive and I use Acronis True Image 10 Home to make a weekly image of my hard drive.

My mom has a compaq computer and the six recovery discuss that it comes with are full of crap.Thankfully, there is an I386 file on the disc which can be easily pulled off .Problem is: How do I make it boot? I have read guide, after guide, after guide. Each one wants Nero Burning ROM.I have Nero 6 and a boot able image that Nero has no option for me to use.I am looking for a way to get this I386 WinXP disc to be bootable, for free, too.
If you use ICQ and windows xp firewall, you have noticed that file send won't work. Here is how to get it working without disabling the entire firewall :1. First you must limit the range of port that ICQ use for send. In icq, click on Main, Preferences, User tab, click on 'Not using proxy' and choose 'Use the following TCP listen port for incoming event from 1030 to 1030'. (use port number of your choice, 1030 is only for exemple)2. After, go into control panel & network connections2. Right click on your connection and select 'properties'3. Left click the advanced tab4. Left click the settings button5. Under services, left click the add button6. For description type "ICQ", for Name of IP put the name that identifies your system with your ISP OR your IP if it is static.7. Both external and internal ports are 1030 by default and TCP. (depend of wich port you set at beginning)8. Click OK and restart
I use Windows XP, and using the Photo Show 5, whenever I want to email or make a DVD out of one of the shows, I get the following message:"We are unable to communicate with Photo Show online at this time. Check that your internet connection is active and your firewall showings are adjusted to allow Photo Show access to the internet." I have tried everything they have suggested, except the last one...MSCONFIG, then to click on start up and look more closely at the software running on your computer that may affect internet access, but I'm afraid to do that, because it might affect my computer's vulnerability.
well i recently realised that i have got into a habit of saving my downloads on my desktop and forgetting to move them from there so i was thinking for the solution and just thought to make my boot drive as read only so that i couldnt save anything there so is there any way by which i can make a drive read only?

Can someone tell me how to make a backup of my OS to a CD disc? My new computer came with Windows Media Center installed but with no reinstallation disk should I need it.
I would like step by step directions on how to do this. I only have to do this for the one laptop, we purchased Recovery Disks for the Dell and HP Pavilion laptops. My wife didn't think about this when purchasing it for Christmas. I am not worried about the other programs that he has in it. Just wanted to make Recovery disk for Windows XP for that system only.
I had a random thought. and I can't find much information on the idea. What happens if I make my XP partition 40 gigs so I had room for programs, but then, for something like Oblivion, Id partition 8-10 gigs strictly for the game. Then Sims 2 id do like, 10 gigs strictly for sims 2. So...would that make the games run faster cause theres only a small area to search, or, is it a waste of time?
Seems like this would be a common question, but I didn't find it anywhere. Feel free to refer me to an appropriate post if there is one.My old laptop bit the dust, and I've got a loaner. It's very low on memory and everything is just really slow. The obvious solution is to add more memory but I won't be able to do that for awhile. In the meantime, is there anything I can do to increase this computer's performance? I searched online and found a lot of hype about disabling services, but upon further research it seems like that won't actually help, with the possible exception of turning off Themes or indexing.I don't run anything fancy on this computer, mostly Firefox, Thunderbird, that sort of thing. It's an Hp Pavillion ze5600 running Windows XP.Keep in mind that I know more about computers than the average office worker, but only slightly. I appreciate any suggestions you have. I have done things like disk cleanup, defrag, virus and spyware scans, and getting unnecessary programs out of the startup, but that is about the extent of my knowledge.
I do most of the stuff using keyboard. So to open applications like calculator, paint etc. i just fire up run using the key comb 'windows key'+'R' and type calc or mspaint. How can I do that for new programs i install like VLC or Winamp? An example of non microsoft program that does this is Textpad. I just type 'textpad' for launching it. I'm wondering where does the 'run' command look for when i type a program there. I'm sure it looks some where else beyond the system path because textpad.exe is not there in the %path% but it still works.
I cannot make head nor tails of ANYTHING I ever look at on an MSN site or anything that's remotely connected to them....the "instaructions" and only MORE confusion on top of the other confusion...I can't understand this systen enuff to even come back[to where?] to find a response to my questions [in the event there ARE any?]- in terms you'd use for a 5 yr. old idiot - HOW do I a]. USE this service..pleze...VERY simply 'a-b-c-' step-by-step instructions ONLY....and then e-mail me at the following e-mail address -
I Just Bought A 250gig Sata Hard Disk That Didn't Came With An Installation Program. So I Downloaded From Viatech.com The Raid Controller Driver That Supports My Motherboard Sata And It Did Worked But Winxp Only Gives Me 111 Gigs Not 250gig. What Can I Do To Get The Other Gigs Working. Also The Driver That I Install, Has An Application Program But It Also Reports 111gigs.
I am trying to reformat my daughters computer using the Windows XP Home Edition CD. But after installing a new CD Rom drive, the computer doesn't recognize the cd rom. I tired add new hardware wizard but when it gets to the part where I can pick the hardware I am trying to install it doesn't list any CD rom drives. I have even tried to change the boot sequence in the Bios settings. Still no luck. So I am hoping that there is a way for me to make a start up disk using the Original Windows XP Home Edition CD.
My Pc is about 15 months Old and it does Not come with a Bootable XP Home, like they used to. I'm basically the admin for a couple of computers my moms has at her business.I've installed log me in so i can log in remotely. Someone in her business keeps uninstalling them from all the computers. I cant make the accounts limited because the programs they use has to run with admin privileges. Is there a way to:1. Remove the accounts ability to install/uninstall programs.2. Remove the accounts ability to access the notification area in the task bar to kill background programs.3. Remove the accounts ability to access the task manager.
